Turt’ toe is the hypcrextension of the metatarsophalangeal joint (MTP). It is generally caused by the great toe being hyperextended or forced into an extcnded position. This may result from pushing off during activitv, or having the shoe "stick' to the surface as may occur with artificial turf (astro turf).
The patient will present with pain on toe cxtension, swoi ling and possible discoloration of the MTP joint. They will have pain in weight bearing and toe push off. The desired outcome of the Kinesio Taping Method is to limit toe extension and providc support of the MTP joint. Pain in the joint will also be reduced by reduction in edema, and joint motion will be reduced by application of a functional correc-tion.
Begin by either having the patient or youself move the great toe into extension to determine the position wherc the joint becomes painful. Prior to tape placement, the practitioner should place the joint in a non-painful position and through the elasticity of the tape minimizc joint motion past the painful point. . _

Place the base of the first Kinesio I strip. Tape should be 1" in width, at the distal tip of the great toe. Apply 20-25 % tcnsion on the Kinesio strip as the tape is applied from the tip of the great toe, to the MTP joint, and down to mid plantar surface. T\vo to three strips will be reąuired, with each successi ve strip moving in an overlapping pattem morę to the media! aspect of the MTP joint.
Apply a figurę of 8 strip of 1" Kinesio tape starting on the space between the lst and 2nd toe. Continue the strip around the plantar surface of the great toe, apply slight downward tension but be careful not to puli the toe into a varus position. Continue the strip over the MTP joint, over the dorsum of the foot angling for the base of the 5th mctatarsal. As you cross over the plantar surface of the foot angle the tape back toward the MTP joint. This strip is to provide plantar flexion pressure to assist the joint capsule control joint movement.
Apply a functional correction application to limit toe movement into extension. For complete review see functional correction technique.

This technique will combine the Kinesio Turf Toe tcchniquc and the use of a moleskin turf toe strap. The mole skin strap is shaped likc a T and is designed to limited great toe oxtension. This is accom-plished by the nonelastic qualities of the moleskin and the placement of the strap with the toe in a glightly flexed position..
Turf toe is a very painful condition and return to activity should be bascd upon the individuals ability to perform functional tasks with minimal or no pain. In addition to the taping techniques the practitioner may want to insert a rigid foot insert madę of metal or plastic to further limit the extension movement of the first MTP joint.
Completed application of the Kinesio Turf Toe technique. For complete review see turf toe tech-niquc.
Place the patients great toe in a slightly flexed position which should be prior to the initiation of pain. Place the top of the T moleskin strap on the distal end of the great toe.
The turf toe strap is madę of moleskin and can be purchased pre-made or madę out of a sheet of moleskin. It should be approximately 8 inches in length, and 1 to 11/2 inches in width depending upon the size of the patient.
Place the turf toe moleskin strap down the dorsal aspect of the lst metatarsal shaft. After the strap has bęen applied, have the patient move their toe into extension to evaluate whether or not the toe is in the proper position.
Be careful not to place the toe in to much of a flexed position, this may place the toe in a position o risk for a fracture due to excessive motion limitation
