Relative Pronouns After Prepositions

When relative pronouns are used after prepositions, they function as objects of a verb. In the example that follows, al nińo is replaced in the relative clause by a quien, which is the direct object of descubrieron. Remember that a direct object answers the question what, who, or whom.

Castigaron al nińo, a quien    They punished the boy, whom they discovered

descubrieron rompiendo la ventana.    breaking a window.

• El que, los que, la que, las que and el cual, los cuales, la cual, and las cuales may be used after any preposition.

Abrimos la ventana, desde la cual vemos el valle.

Daniela es una persona en la cual se puede confiar.

• Que may follow the prepositions a, de, and Este es el auto en que chocaron.

We opened the window from which we see the valley.

Theschool that they attend won the

championship.

Daniela is a person whom you can trust.

if que does not refer to a person.

This is the car in which they crashed.

(They crashed in this car)

• Que may follow the preposition de when the antecedent is a person.

• Quien (quienes) and el que refer to people and may follow any preposition.
