Car boot sales are an increasingly popular part of British life. They started in the early 1990s when Britain s economy was in reeession and some people needed to make extra money to pay the hills. They are a good way to make some money, get rid of things you dont want, and simply have something to do on Sundays. Sonie snobbish people don t like them but, in fact, people from all social classes go to them.
Car boot sales are usually held on Sundays, (many people go to these instead of Church!). You have to be up early to get the good things, because they usually start at 8 a.m. and many people come. They are usually over by early aftemoon.
This is how it works: when people want to sell things that they no longer want or need, they put them into the boot of their car and drive to a special place where a car boot sale is held. Before they drive into this place, the car owners must pay a smali fee (usually about £5). Customers also usually have to pay a smali entry fee (20 - 30p). This money usually goes to a charity, which the organisers decide on. When the drivers get in, they put the articles for sale on a desk or on the ground for people to see.
Most of the customers go because the goods are so cheap. You can lower prices even morę by bargaining with the sellers. The most common things to buy are old books, kitchenware, records and clothes. However, much morę unusual things can occasionally he found, for example rare Roman coins.
These days car boot sales can be enormous, sometimes hundreds of cars come. So naturally, other traders operate here too. People need refreshment if they spend 2-3 hours looking around, so fast food stal 1 s and vans often appear. This kind of sale is so successful that even normal sliops sell their goods there at fuli price - they simple have stal 1 s which look like the original car boot stalls.
Of course, not everyone is happy about car boot sales. Rcligious people say that they have replaccd Church for manv people and think that they should be held on Saturday instead. Local residents also complain about the rubbish left behind and suggest that they should be held in football grounds instead of open fields and park areas. But it looks as though car boot sales are here to stay.
