Biographies of Romantic Poets

The volume includcs papers and essays of hislorians of literaturę of the I9th c. and also theatrologists and authorities on fine arts. Their studies focus on the works and fortuncs of poets (among others Goethe, Wordsworth, Mickiewicz, Słowacki, Krasiński, Norwid, Baudclairc), prosaists, historians and epistolographers (Żmichowska, Poe, Emerson, Thoreau, Lelewel, the Filomat organization members), composers (Beethoven and Brahms) as well as painters. The studies of analytical and interpretative character dominate in the book, in which it can be obscrved how proliflc and revealing the historie literary and musicological studies can be, tracking various manifestations and changes of biography in a work of art. Moreover, there arc texts whose aulhors deal with the reception of life histories of the greatest artists (Brahms, Goethe, Mickiewicz) in various cultural and scholarly circulations of the recent two centuries. An important element arc the studies containing new biographical findings concermng morę or less eminent artists of the I9th century and refreshing the interpretation of their life progress (papers dcvoted to Norwid, Zofia Węgierska, the Filomat and Filarct organization). The lovers and scholars of Romanticism shall find here a multifacetcd view of the shape and senses of the nineteenth-century subjectivity, and also its sharc in the shaping of forms as well as artistic and social ideas.
