This mat has a basie square motif, repeated to make the central square (in no. 40 cotton for a smali mat, and no. 20 for a tablecloth). The basie square is worked all in one row, with the bali thread wound on to a second shuttle to work the eight outside rings. The first row of the border is worked with one shuttle and a bali thread, but the second, third and fourth rows all have the bali thread wound on to a second shuttle. This second shuttle is used in the second row for the two (6 ds p 6 ds) rings outside the chain. The third row is worked in the same way (NB at the corners there are four chains with only one ring each, forming the little groups of four rings). In the fourth row the second shuttle is used to make the groups of three rings and, of course, the Josephinc knots. The fourth row seems to go round the corner quite happily without alteration.
