DISABLED STAFF
i
1 ..<?... , most people will think you mean avoiding racial or sexual discrimination. : However, there are other types of discrimination too. True diversity means making | surę that no group of people is prevented from being a member of your Staff because I of prejudice.1
1
Disabled workers are one such group. When we think of a disabled person, we often | think of someone with mobility problems who needs to use a wheelchair, but there f are other types of disability too, like sight or hearing problems.
1
Disabled staff have skills and experience which can benefit your business. 1
2 ......., this will increase the rangę of candidates for recruiting staff. On the other I
hand, 3--------- you may discourage the right person for the job. Not only that, but §
reports suggest that disabled staff are often very good at creative thinking. This is I not surprising, as most of them have to come up with creative Solutions to help them |
in their day-to-day lives. 4....... , for example, you are likely to be an excellent I
problem-solver.
The changes needed in the workplace for disabled people are often quite smali. You f may need to make minor changes to the building and possibly some other changes, |
depending on the type of disability. For example, 5......., company documents may |
be needed in a different format, like a recording or in large print.
Finally, it is worth remembering that 6 ........you will probably attract a morę i
diverse rangę of customers. After all, most disabled people could be your customers as well.

I think we’ll have to take on another administrative assistant.
Do we really need an extra person? Just ask Leila if she wants to do one or two extra hours.
I’m surę she doesn’t. She does too much already.
Do you think she 1 ..v/Qul.d. say ‘no’ even if it was only one or two hours?
It’s morę than that.
But the problem is that sometimes there’s a lot of extra paperwork, but
sometimes there’s very little. I think if I were you, I 2.............just get sonie
temporary staff in for those times. If you contacted the agency, I’m surę they 3 .............find someone.
I haven’t always been very happy with the ąuality of people that the agency
. have sent us. At least if we interview the person ourselves, we 4.............
have a better idea about how suitable they are.
And do you think you can persuade the human resources department to take on a permanent new member of staff?
Weil, I’m going to try. If I produce a report and a proposed job description, I think they 5.............accept the idea.
