The new front axle - it is being installed in all Type 1 models - represents in its design a combination between the previous Type 1 axle and the Type 3 axle. The two welded axle beams are now further apart and each beam houses a 10 leaf torsion spring. The torsion arms are mounted in DU bearings inside and needle bearings outside. The steering knuckles and torsion arms are con-nected via maintenance free bali joints.
The camber is adjusted at the upper bali joints.
The modified torsion springs together with shock absor-bers and new hollow rubber springs give morę comfor-table springing action. The hollow rubber springs which have 2 damping rings give progressive springing action.
The maintenance free bali joints are indicated by the yellow dots and the arrows point to the remaining nipples which require lubrication every 10 000 km (6000 miles) only or at least once a year.
