The decline in sales of alcohol across the bar is visiblc throughout the country, says the prcsidcnt of Durham Student Union, Nick Piekłeś. This is partly financial, but also represents a change in youth culturc. The Durham SU bar has stopped sclling real ale, says Mr Piekłeś, becausc there was no demand - and the appcal of traditional pubs for young drinkers seems limited. He adds that students may still be drinking alcohol, but, rather than spending time in pubs, they buy winę from supermarkets, or go to bars.
Whilc there are so many headlines about exccssive consumption of alcohol among the young in generał, thesc changes involving students raisc the prospcct of morę American-style, healthy-living youngsters at least on campus . It's not good news for the pub industry, which has already seen so many inner-city pubs close.
No longer can student trends be dismissed as referring only to a smali, unreprcsentative group, as almost half of all young people now go to univcrsity, with morę than two-thirds of those in morę afTluent parts of the country going on to higher education.
In the vicw of Vcronica King, NUS Vicc-Presidcnt for welfare, the factors undcrlying the decline in student drinking are morę practical. Simply, students have ncither enough time nor money for it. Dcbt reduces their spending power, and with so many now having term-time jobs, they don’t have the long hours to sit in pubs. When so much time is taken caming money, the time pressurc on academic work inereases, she says, and leisure activities tend to sufTcr. "YouTe morę likely to find a student working bchind a bar than drinking in front ofone these days."
