Buttonholes
On ii I x I ribbing. thc huttonholc is wnrkcd over a purl .stirch. In order to mnintain the knit stitches on boih sidcs ot it, tliis stitch has K* doublcJ in rhe la>c row on the wrony side uf rhe work betore thc hntton-hole. To Jo this, knii I stitch and knit I stirch rwisred out oł the stirch abovc which the buttonhole is going to lic.
In the following rows. work ot’ the tac mg with rhe lirst purl >ntch as a selvedgc stitch, and put the stitches on a stitch holder when the button-ltole has reached thc destrcd length. Work the sckedge stitches in cvery row and puli rhcm ospecinlly tight.
Now work the second hall ol the facing, using rhe second stitch as a selvedge stitch.
When this side has reached the Jesired length. work over the cntire width agstin, and in the hrst row knit or purl the 2 “sehedge siuchcs" together. as applicahlc.
On 2 X 2 ribbing, thc work tor rhe hnrronhole i> divided up between 2 purl stitches. One purl stitch. in each instance, fbrms the sclvedge stitch on each side herc.
IFor a verticnl buttonhole in 1 x 1 ribbing, double 1 knit stitch in a row on the wrong side of the work. and work the first purl stitch of the row on the right side of the work as the selvedge stitch.
2 Work the second half of the fac-ing to the desired length with the second stitch forming the selvedge stitch. Continue working on all the stitches, knitting or purling them together in the first row. as applicable.
The purl stitches of 2 x 2 ribbing form the selvedge stitches of the buttonhole odges.
On gnrtcr stitch facings, vertical buttonholes are hardly noticeable if the selvedge stitches are worked as a garter stitch selvedge. Knit them in every row and puli tight.
If you cun't f ind matching buttons, you can knit them with thc* same yarn in a contr.ist color. Cast on 6 to 10 stitches, depending on the yarn
