HC§RD(7) FROM PYSZĄCA IN WESTERN GREAT POLAND REMARKS ON THE POSITION OF GREAT POLAND IN THE LONG-DISTANCE EXCHANGE ROUTES DURING THE LATE BRONZE AGE
LOCATION AND HISTORY OF THE RESEARCH
Pyiząca is a hamlet located just on the knec of the Warta river downstream, •boui 5 km to the south-east of the district-capitol Śrem (Fig. I). Since the end of ihc XIX century, accidental discoveries have madę this area especially attractive fur archacological research. However. a Professional archaeologist tumed up there alast in 1926, as Professor Józef Kostrzewski was informed about a cremation im grave that had becn uncovered during sand cxtraction insidc the local sand-pit In those days, the mentioned sand-pit had been extensively exploited by the cighbouring brickyard. J. Kostrzewski carried out the rescuc excavation twice ■.'uming there in 1931) only for a few days, but he also identified the three major haeological sites (labcllcd lirom 1 to 3) situated within the lields bclonging to Pysząca. In 1956 the results of the Professor’s excavations were reported by his m. B. Kostrzewski (1956).
Bcfore describing the Late Branże Age artefacts, it is necessary to givc a birdVeye view of the archacological situation in the area (Fig. I). First of all. in fysząca there have becn identified two Lausitz culture cemctcries dated to the I ady Iron Age (sites 1 and 2). Moreover, the cemeteries of the Pomcranian and Praeiyórak culture communities as well as the remains of the scttlcments front Ihe Neolithic and Early Mcdicval times havc been found to the north-cast of the Pyflftca Farm buildings, at the sile labelled 3.
The artefacts being discussed in this articlc come front site I. which was found ai ihe veiy beginning of the professional archacological survey in Pysząca. In the immerof 1967 within the sand-pit mentioned above (site I). a local farmer was <%ging the sand for his own construction purposes and found by chance a pot-
