With the introduction of dlsc brakes the Volkswagen factory meets the demands madę on fast passenger vehicles by present day traffic conditions. Ali Type 3 models are being (itted with dlsc brakes on the front wheels with effect from August 1965. The combination of disc brakes on the front wheels and drum brakes at the rear unites the advantages of both brake Systems. The disc brake guarantees uniform braking with maxi-mum efficiency even under extremely arduous conditions. The brakes require very little maintenance and are easy to repair on account of the simple design.

With disc brakes. the normal brake drum is replaced by a malleable iron disc with a cylindrical hub. A caliper housing bolted to the steering knuckle contains the hydraulic mechanism and the brake pads which grip the brake disc from both sides. The two parts of the caliper housing form cylinders in which the self-adjusting I pistons move, and the two cylinders are connected by an internal drilling. The brake pads are suspended in front
