Renovation of Second Floor Galleries of European Art

Restoring the logie and clarity of the original 1892 plan by Shepley, Rutan & Coolidge, the renovation rcplaces the maze-like circulation pattern imposed by earlier remodelings with a series of corridor galleries. These artificially lit spaces are avai labie for showing works on paper that can be displayed in proximity to paintings and sculpture by the same artists in the larger, skylit galleries. New skylights and translucent laylights in the major gallery spaces restrict harmful ultraviolet light while allowing for the natural light that enhances viewing.

The corridor galleries originally formed a rectanglc in the center of the second floor, providing long, dramatic vistas and a elear circulation pattern. Walls blocking portions of the corridor were removcd, and doorways repositioned according to the original plan. New glass walls were added, allowing a view of the grand entrance staircase.
