■ T.S. Eliot (1888-1965) a British poet, writer of plays, and literary critic, born in the US. Ezra Pound encouraged him to live in England, where from 1914 he madę his home. Eliot's poems have had a great influence on other poets, particularly The Waste Land (1922) and Four Quartets (1944). One of his most important new ideas was to use the natural rhythms of speech in his poetry.
■ Ezra Pound (1885-1972) a US poet who had a great influence on other modern poets, including T S Eliot, Robert Frost, W B Yeats and James Joyce. He moved to Britain in 1907 and then lived in France and Italy. He madę broadcasts praising Fascist ideas during World War II and was accused of helping the enemy.
■ William Carols Williams (1883-1963) was an American poet closely associated with modernism and Imagism. He was also a pediatrician and generał practitioner of medicine, having graduated from the University of Pennsylvania.

fH.D. (born HILDA DOOLITTLE) (1886-1961) a US poet who also wrote plays, novels and children's stories. She usually wrote as 'H D’.
