His best-known books were Sister Carrie (1900) and An American Tragedy (1925). boili of which were madę into films.

■ STEPHEN CRANE m (1871-1900) a US jonrnalist who wrote poems and realistic novels. His most famons novel is The Red Badge of Courage (1895) about a frightened soldier who finds courage in the American Civil War. Crane went to live in England in 1897 but died three years later at the age of 28.
