In order to create The Cuckoo’s Nest brand I have started wlth a thorough research online. IVe done some readlng about best hostels for backpackers, checked plntrest for inspiration on interior design (having in mind what my Client would like to make in his own hostel, one of which would be a pool bar and a leisure area with hammocks).
I also read about Hol An and looked through some photos but what was very helpful to get an inspiration here was in fact my own experience of the city. IVe had the pleas-ure of backpacking in Vietnam myself in 2018 and Hoi An was one of the cities IVe stayed in.
At the end I created a “Brainstorm" for the brand, listing some words connected to what my Client would like to convey.
The Cuckoo’s Nest name was insplred by the american movie from 1975 “One flew over the cuckoo’s nest’. My Client madę it elear that he would like to keep some ref-erence to the movie in creation of his brand so in early steps of making it I watched the mov!e looking for some inspiration. The movie itself is rather depressing and dark and as we were mainly going for a positive, social and homely vlbe the influence from the movie could not be very significant I think though that I managed to get the subtle feel of a mental institution by adding a symbolic barb wire in the logo’s frame and some of the produets. Also combining blue and white colours can somewhat resemble hospital colours.
As we have a use of a word “nest" in the logo, my instant thought was to place the hostefs name on a cirle shape. I’ve checked some pictures of birds nests online and started sketching ideas. My Client mentioned that he wants a character in his logo and that’s hew the bird came in the picture.
I first looked up birds that inhabit Vietnam itself. Great Hornbill is one of the most famous inhabitants and his weird and crazy looks feit fitting to the brand. Although after a brief with my Client he madę it elear that he doesn’t want the character to resemble any specific species so I
