George Bernard Shaw once said that “the single biggest problem in communication is the illusion that it has taken place.” This can be especially applied to the communication between the doctor and the patient. In his lecture dr Peter Washer will talk about the necessities of learning how to communicate with the patients.
Among other things, he will touch upon:
• the benefits of elear communication;
• talking to patients from different cultures, especially the effects of culture on clinical communication
• giving information and managing uncertainty.
The talk will consist of a lecture followed by a Q&A session.
Dr Peter Washer is the author of a textbook, Clinical Communication Skills (Oxford University Press 2009), which won first prize in its category in the British Medical Association's book awards. He has been a lecturer in Clinical Communication in University College, London and a Teaching Fellow in Clinical Communication at Imperial College, London. He has also worked widely in educational and staff development in higher education. He currently works at the Royal College of Radiologists in London, where he has written the world’s first postgraduate certificate in medical education for radiology.
