Bilaterally, superficial erector spinae
extend the spine; no EMG activity present
when standing erect in neutral posture
Unilaterally, iliocostalis and longissimus
laterally flex (side bend) and rotate to the
opposite side

Lateral branches of the dorsal primary
division of the spinal nerves
