Fig. 20 shows the typical road profile which was adopted. At the summit the road passes through a tunnel (see Fig. 19) 325 m in length at a depth of approximatively 40 m.

The construction work took 7 years; work being carried out on the average 8 months in the year. In the highest areas, due to the severity of the climate, the working period lastcd ap-proximatively 100 days. The maximum number of workmen employed was 3000.

The construction costs were as follows:

Tunnel ............................. sFr.    2,900,000.—

The scarcity of materials and labour during the 2nd World War caused many difficulties.

An inscription in the rock records this fact: “Built in years of hardship 1938/45 for times of peace.”

Through the sparsely wooded valley of Meien the visitors will reach after an hour the tunnel piercing the mountain under the highest section of the pass. From the other side of the tunnel there is a splendid view on the Stein glacier which, likc most alpine glaciers, has shrunk considerably in rccent years.

Lunch will be served at the Steingletscher Hotel after which the coaches will takc the cxcursionists down the Bemese side of the pass, much morę densely wooded, and then on to Innertkirchen, via Gadmen and Nessenthal. At Innertkirchen visitors will see the underground power station of the Oberhasii Power Company Ltd.

La Fig. 20 montre le profil-type de la chaussee. Au sommet, la route passe dans un tunnel de faite (Fig. 20) de 325 m de longueur k 40 m environ au-dessous du niveau du sol.

La construction a dure de 1938 a 1945. II y a lieu de signaler que les travaux ont pu etre poursuivis en moyenne 8 mois par an. Dans les rćgions elevees, en raison de l’extreme rigueur du climat, la periode de travail annuelle a ete de 100 joumees environ. L’effectif maximum des ouvriers aatteint 3000 hommes.

Les depenses de construction sont les suivantes:

Les travaux ont ete accomplis pendant la deuxieme guerre mondiale alors quc la pćnuric dc materiaux et de main-d’ceuvre soulevait de nombreuses difficultes. Une plaque le rappelle par cette inscription:

<<1938-1945 - In schwercn Zeitcn dcm Fricden gcwciht.

Une ccuvre de paix accomplie en des temps difficiles.»

Le dejeuner sera servi a l’Hótel Steingletscher. Aprćs une courte halte l’excursion se poursuivra sur Innertkirchen en passant par Gadmen, Nessenthal et la vallee boisee de Gadmen. A Innertkirchen les Congressistes visitcront la centrale sou-terraine des Forces Motrices de 1’Oberhasli.
