I thank you for your letter of the 2nd August and I regret very much that I shall not have the honour and pleasure of meeting you.
I am most grateful to you for your agreement to my suggestlon that your Brigade in the Middle East should take part in the defence of the fortress of Tobruk. I know very well that no fortress could have morę staunch defenders, and I have no doubt whatever that your regiments will find thore the opportunity for which I know they have been waiting.
I assure you that I will make it my personal concem to ensure that they shall be fully eąuipped and that they shall be employed as a complete unit, together with the Officers1 Legion. As regards armoured vehicles, I cannot promise that the Brigade will be supplied with these in the first instance, as there is only a limited number of tanks in Tobruk. Such tanks as are in Tobruk are at present fully rnanned by the Royal Armoured Corps, but I will do my best to ensure that your Brigade shall receive some armoured
/vehicles
