straight arm casc which always re-quires an undershoot.
The second thing to notę is that a does not depend upon the offset angle p. This is so bccause each length of offset arm automat ically requires a specific olTset angle which satisfics all conditions for minimum over-all traek-ing error. In other words. once an arm length is chosen by the mamifacturer there is one. and ontjj one. offset angle that will properly set the tracking errors equal at radii of 2.50. 3.78, and 5.75 inches. Any other choiee of olTset angle will set the tracking errors equal at completoly different radii than those chosen in this article.
Unfortunately, there does not exist a generał agreement among arm manii-facturcrs as to what radii should be used in setting the tracking errors cqual. The outer radius generally varies from 5.75 to fi.OO inches and the inner radius anywhere front 1.80 to 3.00 inches. These wide variations make it impossible to specify a simple formula which will allow the user to properly position any manufact urer's arm for minimum over-all tracking error. Therefore. cach arm nnist be oriented so that it satisfics the tangoncy criteria which the manufacturer originally chose in the design of his arm. We can only (juestion whether or not the manu-facturer’s choice is a realistic one.
Luckilv, the olTset arm is so superior
