Dear Rowley,

The Halifax crews vrhó retumed from Brest yesterday all speak very highly of the fighter escort they received from your Squadron3 in No. 10 Group. It appears that the Halifax air gunners seldow had a chance to open fire and that the spitfiros were always there to chase away any Iluns that tried to approach., The withdrawal in particular was covered very effectively. The Souadron Commanders have asked me to have their appreciation conveyed to the proper nuarter, and I will be grateful if you will do this for me,

The flak seems to have been heavier and morę accurate than on the 18th December. Yle got scsne reasonably good photos whioh show all three ships still at Brest, but it is difficult to say from these photos where the boiabs fell.

As you will have heard one of our crews was picked up. ,'fe had one definitely shot down by flak and one other missing.
