The work has been divided into ten chapters. The author has traced exhaustively the concepl of Dana (gift) from the Vedas, Dharmasustras, Smrtis and the PurSnas. The first chapter forms an introduction in which the author has traced the history of the concept of d&na right from the Vedas upto the PurSnas. Various aspccts of dana such as dana for atonement, worthy rccipient for a d&na, different views about worthy recipienl, gifls and their deitics, etc. have been discussed. After discussing the different aspects of d&na in the inlroductory chapter, al the end of this chapter the author has given an outline of the following chapters. The following chapters contain detailed Information regarding various kinds of gilts, viz. Gift of Food (chap. two), Gift of Cows (chap. three), Gift of Mounlains and some other symbolic Gifls (chap. four), Gifls in Worship (chap. five), Gift of Things as well as Beings (chap. six), Royal Gilts (chap. seven), Pcriodical Gifts (chap. eight), Gifls at the time of Srdddhas (chap. ninc), Rdsumć and Conclusion (Chap. ten.)
Gift of Food consists of different eatablcs-sesame, rice boiled in milk, fish, winę, bread, coagulated milk, modakas , jaggery, ghee, oil, mudga, sugar, different types of corn eg. rice, barlcy, while mustard, wheal, bcans mixcd with sesame etc.
Gift of Cows consists of symbolic cows such as jaggery-cow, ghce cow, sesame-cow, watcr-cow, honey-cow, sugar-cow, curds-cow and juice-cow. These are symbolic cows and the tenlh one is a rcal live cow.
Gil) of Mounlains - The mountains to be given as gifts are symbolic. Thcy are mountains of com, mountain of salt, mountain of jaggery, mountain of gold, mountain of sesame, mountain of cotton, mountain of ghee, mountain of silver, mountain of sugar, etc.
Gifts in Worship consist of flowers, sandalwood, incense, camphor, lamp and other offerings of eatablcs, etc.
Gifts of Things as well as Beings - These consist of a live cow, (a tawny cow), a she-buffalo, a buli, an elephant, a horse, a daughter
