The TwinPipe system
Overview
Introduction This section describes the special installation rules which apply when installing the TwinPipe
system.
When the handling and installation instructions coincide with those for the single pipe system,
reference is made to the latter.

In areas with heavy traffic the 400 mm are
measured from the top of the pipe to the

100 mm
In areas with no or only light traffic the 400
mm are measured from the top of the pipe to
the top of the grass or gravel layer.
The instructive measurements do not take
slopes and possible local requirements to the
trench into account.
Do not forget warning tape(!)
Welds and muffs Excavate additional 250-300 mm at welds
and muffs under and along the pipes to
ensure sound working conditions.
When using PE-shrink muffs, remember the
requirement for additional space and for sup-
port.
When using preinstalled muff ensure suffici-
ent space for it, min. 1000 mm.

TwinPipes
Straight pipes
General Due to the distance between the steel pipes it is recommended to weld the pipes together by
means of autogenous welding.
Position in trench Always place preinsulated TwinPipes and
components, so one service pipe is directly
over the other (flow pipe at the bottom).
The alarm wires must lie at the top of the
joint.
Pipe label in 12 o clock-position.
Termination of If a straight pipe run is not terminated with a
straight pipe runs preinsulated component with preinstalled
a
fixing bars, then weld fixing bars on.
In connection with gas welding protect the

Insulation of All muff types are provided with a label, specifying the necessary foam quantity = Foam pack
joints number.
However, these statements have been specified for installation on single pipes.
Consequently, it is important to apply the tables in section 14.6 of this manual when
determining the foam pack number to use.

TwinPipes
Branches
General If a preinsulated branch is used at the end of a pipe run without e.g. preinsulated bend, then
fixing bars must be welded on to the main pipe of the branch.
If preinsulated TwinPipe branches are not used, pay attention to the following:
- On-site made branch, straight taper lock branch, Twin-Twin. Weld fixing bars on the branch
in addition to the reinforcement plates*) at the branch pipe pieces.
See section 14.2.0.1 of this manual.
- On-site made branch with double branch pipe pieces for flexible pipes.
Possibly weld reinforcement plates*) onto the branch pipe pieces.
*) Consequent use of reinforcement plates complies with the more stringent requirements in
accordance with standard draft prEN 13941:2000, also see section 4.2.
Straight taper Remove the insulation and adjust the lengths
lock branch as illustrated.

Insulation of joints, foam packs
Application ALSTOM foam packs are used for all types of TwinPipe joints.
Note! All muff types are delivered with labels, from which also the foam quantity corresponding
to a certain outer diameter appears.
As all muff types, except bolt muffs and band muffs with 2 connecting branches, originally are
calculated for single pipes, the foam specifications on these muffs do not apply directly to
TwinPipes. Consequently, it is important to use the tables in this section.

TwinPipes
Surveillance
General All preinsulated TwinPipes and preinsulated components to match are available with embed-
ded copper wires for surveillance when connected to mobile or permanently installed measu-
ring equipment.
(Preinsulated components are all available with surveillance wires).
This ensures a good inspection of the pipe system during the construction as well as the ope-
ration phase for faults like:
- Faulty welds
- Installation faults
- Excavation damages
(Flexible pipes are delivered without surveillance wires).
Installation In principle connect alarm wires and components and check the system according to the
installation instructions in section 23.0 of this manual.
Always have a circuit diagram ready before installation of the pipes and the installation.
