ILS landing


Landing using the Instrument Landing System (ILS)

When you call inbound and your HSI instrument mode is TCN/ILS or NAV/ILS, the ILS system will be active 15-20nm from the airbase. You have to select TACAN channel and set the final approach course for the runway using the course knob yourself. The default TACAN channel is your home (landing) base. The course arrow show the runway heading in relation to your own heading. In this example we are using Mandumi airbase, runway 20. ILS is not yet active


The bearing pointer show the direction to the airbase. If you have fuel enough it is always bet to fly over the airbase to make a visual check of the situation. In this case we assume you are short on fuel and will take the shortest way home. 25-30nm out you call tower and request permission for an emergency landing (T-3).

In this example we assume Air Traffic Control (ATC) clear you to land at runway 20. The "correct" runway is always the one closest possible to upwind - ICP-5 (cruise) reports the direction from which the wind comes - but ATC in Falcon 4.0 will sometimes vector you in to a downwind runway.


15-20nm from the airbase ILS automatically activate (as long as you have called tower for inbound or emergency). ILS is activated. Note the bearing pointer is pointing 45° to the right and the course arrow has "split". The middle part of the course arrow is the Course Deviation Indicator (CDI), which indicates the deviation from your position to the runway heading.

If you are flying head-on to the airbase you will not have any final at all. This is why you have to turn left in this case. Your final approach course is now almost opposite of your heading which means that eventually you have to turn back to the right when you are closing up to the base leg position. Remember to keep an eye on the range window.


You are now on the right base leg. The main thing here is to keep an eye on the CDI. You now have the airbase 45° on your right, and the runway heading at 90° . When the CDI starts to walk down towards to course arrow it is time to turn to final approact course.


The CDI keeps moving towards the middle of your course arrow as you are closing up to final approach course


Eventually your HSI should show this


Coming in on final when it is dark and the runway light suddenly appears and you find yourself perfectly lined up, is one of those wonderful moments
