Editorial
I would like to take this opportunity to
announce a change in the Editorial Team for the
Journal of Pharmaceutical Sciences (JPharmSci).
Professor William Charman has decided to
step down as
JPhamSci Associate Editor on
December 31, 2008. Professor Charman has served
as Associate Editor of
JPhamSci since July 1,
2003. Through his dedication and hard work,
many excellent research articles in the area of
interfacial and colloidal chemistry as applied to
pharmaceutical problems have been published in
JPharmSci. In addition, because of his scientific
breadth, Professor Charman has also assisted
in the review of manuscripts in the areas of
pharmacokinetics, pharmaceutical biotechnology,
and cellular and molecular biopharmaceutics. On
behalf of the journal’s other Associate Editors,
authors, reviewers, and readers, I would like to
publicly thank Professor Charman for his many
significant contributions to
JPharmSci over the
past 5.5 years.
Since Professor Charman handled a portfolio of
manuscripts for
JPharmSci that covered a wide
spectrum of topics in the pharmaceutical sciences,
it was important for the journal to identify a new
Associate Editor having similar breadth in his/her
scientific expertise. It is with great honor and
pleasure that I announce here the appointment
of Professor Thomas Rades as
JPharmSci Asso-
ciate Editor. Professor Rades’ appointment as
JPharmSci Associate Editor will be effective on
October 1, 2008.
Professor Rades is currently Chair of Pharma-
ceutical Sciences in the School of Pharmacy at
the University of Otago, Dunedin, New Zealand.
His research interests include: formulation, drug
delivery, and physical characterization of the solid
and liquid crystalline state of matter. His research
into these areas aims to increase our understand-
ing of the physicochemical properties of drugs
and their use in human and veterinary medicine.
Professor Rades’ scientific expertise spans the
physical, chemical, and biological sciences as well
as pharmaceutical technology.
Professor Rades earned his PhD degree in 1994
from the University of Braunschweig, Germany
for his work on thermotropic and lyotropic liquid
crystalline drugs. After working for a few years as
a Research Scientist in Preclinical Development
and Formulation at F. Hoffmann-La Roche in
Basel, Switzerland, Professor Rades was appoint-
ed in 1999 as a Senior Lecturer to the Faculty
of Pharmaceutical Sciences at the University of
Otago. He was then promoted to his current
position as Chair of Pharmaceutical Sciences in
2003. Professor Rades also holds a visiting profes-
sorship at the Department of Medicine at the
University of Adelaide, Australia and The School
of Life and Health at Aston University, Birming-
ham, UK, and he is currently President of the New
Zealand Controlled Release Society.
During his career, Professor Rades has earned
an international reputation for his research in
drug formulation, drug delivery, and physical
characterization of liquid and solid states of
drugs. Professor Rades has published more than
140 articles in international peer review journals
as well as numerous book chapters and patents.
Professor Rades also has extensive experience as a
reviewer for the leading journals in the pharma-
ceutical sciences. For example, he currently serves
on the Editorial Advisory Board for
JPharmSci,
Journal of Controlled Release, Pharmazie, Journal
of Pharmacy and Pharmacology, Journal of Bio-
materials Science-Polymer Edition, and Journal
of Lipid Assemblies.
Professor Rades’ breadth and depth of knowl-
edge and experience in research and editing in the
areas of drug formulation, drug delivery, and
physical characterization of liquid and solid states
of drugs, make him imminently qualified to
replace Professor Charman as an Associate Editor
of
JPharmSci.
In conclusion, I would like to publicly thank
Professor
Rades
for
agreeing
to
serve
as
JPharmSci Associate Editor. With his addition to
JPharmSci’s editorial team, I am confident that
we will continue to provide pharmaceutical scien-
tists worldwide with a high-quality journal in
which to communicate their most recent and most
significant scientific findings.
