Precision Marshall’s RUETOM SPECIAL is a premium quality mold steel for use in
plastic molds. The grade is particularly suited for molding PVC and other corrosive
plastics. The grade offers an excellent combination of hardness, toughness,
corrosion resistance and wear resistance.

Applications for RUETOM SPECIAL include molds for corrosive plastics, molds for
abrasive and filled plastics, and molds requiring an excellent surface finish.

Heat uniformly to 1600°F and hold for two hours. Furnace cool, at a maximum rate of
30°F per hour to 1200°F, and air cool.

Preheat to 1450/1550°F. After thorough preheating, raise to 1850°F and soak one
half hour to one hour, depending on section thickness. Air cool to 150°F or until the
tool is hand warm. Temper immediately.

Double tempering is required. The tempering temperature may be varied
according to the desired hardness, but it is usually performed at 750°F.

Electro-discharge machining is used in the production of various tooling. This
process produces recast, rehardened and retempered layers on the EDM surface.
It is recommended that RUETOM SPECIAL be stress relieved at 50°F below the final
tool tempering temperature, after the EDM process, to temper the rehardened layer
produced by EDM.

RUETOM SPECIAL 420 ESR is provided completely decarb free and stress relieved.

Ground oversize to typical rms 50/75, maximum 125.

Available in standard thickness increments 1/4” through 4”.
