Engineer of the watch unfit for duty	Engine room personnel	Raise engineer alarm; ring Chief Engineer; man engine control room/control platform; inform bridge; if vessel on manual steering, ask for current engine manoeuvre; carry out manoeuvring order; otherwise, await arrival of an engineer. Helmsman unfit for duty	Officer of the watch	Vessel navigating in estuary and/or manoeuvring: immediately mans rudder; summons second watchman, orders to him take over rudder; requests Master to proceed to bridge; summons replacement for second watchman.
First Aid	whoever is at the scene	administers First Aid to casualty: checks breathing and heartbeat, where necessary, administers respiration and heart massage; places casualty in stable side position.
Documentation	Master	Makes entry in ship's log; makes entry in sick log; reports to headoffice.	Ship's log

4. Training on Board

• Train watchkeepers to recognise dangerously close quarters with other ships (danger of collision) and to react accordingly. When making avoiding manoeuvre, ask watchkeeper what he would have done had the officer of the watch been unable to issue orders.

• Similar exercise may be discussed or rehearsed in engine room whilst doing manoeuvres or in other critical situations.

• Introduction of watchkeepers to vital functions including use of means of communication

• Informative session and discussion
