Track 14: Listening Test for Unit 6

[P = Presenter; F = Fran; C1 = Caller 1; C2 = Caller 2]

P: Good morning, and welcome to `Ask an expert'. We all know that feeling: too much to do, and not enough time, but what can we do about it? Well, today's guest is Fran Longshanks, an expert in time management. Welcome to the programme, Fran.

F: Thank you.

P: Fran, you work with some of the most successful people in business today, don't you?

F: Yes, I do. But whether you're a top executive in a big international company, or a university student trying to study for exams, everyone can learn to make their life easier and more enjoyable with good organisation and time management.

P: OK. Our first caller this morning is Mark, from Devon. Good morning, Mark. What's your question?

C1: Hello. I have to write a big report for my boss, but I'm having trouble getting started. I've already wasted a week on this, and I have to hand it in on Friday.

F: Hello Mark. This is a common problem. You are procrastinating - that means you're wasting time - because you are afraid of the large size of this piece of work. You need to break this down into smaller tasks. First, you must make a list of everything you need to do. Then decide what you need to do first, and set a time limit for each task. Work on each task for a while, until you get them all done.

C1: Oh, thank you, Fran. I'm going to get started right now.

P: Our next caller is Judy, from Cardiff.

C2: Oh, good morning. I'm a teacher, and I've just got too much to do. As well as preparing lessons and marking work, I've agreed to run the drama club and I'm on three committees.

F: Hello, Judy. This is a situation that many people find themselves in. First of all, you shouldn't feel bad about saying `no'. You need to make sure you can do your own job before you take on extra tasks. Secondly, you should learn to delegate and ask other people to do things you can't do. Do you have to go to all the committee meetings, or can someone else go for you?

C2: Oh. That's a good idea. I'll ask my colleague to go. Thanks, Fran.

P: Good luck, Judy. And our next caller is... [fade]
