The Basic Face

Study the drawing and photograph in Figs 5 and 6. The tace is expressionless — vacant, as we wou Id say â€” no wrinkles, no frown, no smile. The only teatures are those formed by permanent physical teatures, the eyebrows, eyeballsand lids, the intra-orbital furrow, the naso-labial furrow, the pillars of the mouth, the nose, the chin boss. Even some of these shapes are very soft and subtle and can only be perceived by judicious lighting.

It wou Id be very easy for me to carve a large head, say two thirds life size, with hair and other encum-brances well out of the way to facilitate the work. However, long experience of teaching carvers has shown me that most of them are working on a smali scalÄ™ because the figures they carve are quite smali. Even on a statuÄ™ one metre high the head would only be about 15cm (6") tali, and few carvers aspire to that size.

In this example the head is 10cm (4") high which although still quite large for a figurÄ™, uses the same basie technique as a smaller one, which are in some ways different from those used on a larger head.
