Leo O d you watch tnat documentaiy about the latcst advanccs in geneticaPy modificd food? They've dceclopcd a way of gcnctically adapting pigs -.o that '.Kry produce low-fat bacon.
Rosie Weil. I vion't be eating it.
Leo Why not? Whafs the big fuss about GM food?
Rosie lt's unknown territory. We don't know enough about what effects it may have on the human body. You know. they talk about how GM food could affect our digestior., cause allergics. tha: sort of thing.
Leo lhere's a lot of contraversy around it. but no actual ceidence to prove that GM food does us sny ha im. Rosie I dont agree with tnat argument. Tm afraid. Thcrc may be no cvidcncc rigiit now. but it's the long term effects that l'm concerncd about. Leo Weil any char.ge nas aotential consccucnces. You could make exactly the same argument against mobile phones, or arty new technology. Of course they may have harmful side effects but you have to wcigh those up against their huge benefits.
Rosie Ute what?
Leo for a start, il could nelp solve the world food crisis. by crcating food crops which can tolerate cxtreme agricultural conditions. like droughts or floods. It can help farmer* in dcvcloping countries produce morÄ™ food.
Rosie £r. no. starvation in developing countries isn't about the ęuantily of food produced - ifs just that it is not distributed to the right place*. So that argument doesn't make sense - try another one!
Leo Ali right. thafi a fair point I suopose ... but whal about using GM food to fight malnutrition? Sureiyyou can'I disapprove of that?
Rosie AU right. give me an example.
Leo 'Weil, in some parts of Africa and Asia there are thousands of people suffering from bl-.ndness caused by a lackof Yitamin A. Now there'* a new type of ricc which ha* been engineered tocontain massh-e amounts of vitamin A. So there you are ... problem solved! Rosie Yeah. these are good inlentions, but not if we end up poisoning people in the long run. I don'! know. I just find the whole thing unnatural. I don't think we have a right to 'play God' in thi* way.
Leo I sec what you mean. But to be honest with you. people have been Crossing breeds for hundreds of years. Il's just the methods that are new. Rosie Wed. I think we'rc going to have to agree to disagree here ... Anyway. talking about food. what shall we ...?
