In English, a neuter gender exist$, but the use of the adjective ‘it’ dehumanises the hijra, strips this being of his/her very humanity. And despite the proliferation in English of categorisations related to sexuality - eunuchs, hermaphro-dites, transvestites, homosexuals, bisexuals, et al. - not one completely defines the hijra. What is the hijra? The masculine and the feminine are two distinct principles, each possessing its distinct modę of being. But the hijra combines traits peculiar to both genders and yet is neither ąuite one nor the other. (1992: 81-2)
