ICE-DIVING IN RUSSIA
The Russian North has a great potential for extreme tourism, but a long 9-month winter turns most
of the year into a 1) ……………… season for most tour services. An exception is the White Sea
ice-diving, a unique local service attracting divers from Russia, the United States and Europe. The
ice-diving season lasts from February to April and is connected with light day duration on the Polar
Circle.
Winter diving in the US and in Europe involves 2) ……………… water lakes. By contrast, in the
White Sea marine creatures appear in all their glory in incredibly clear water with a visibility
reaching 50 metres, in a majestic scenery of fantastic ice forms. Under the vaults of ice and among

such as soft corals and a wide variety of fish species, starfish, urchins, crabs, sea anemones and
shrimps. Sea animals in the White Sea may be less spectacular than in Egypt or in the Caribbean,
