On the morning of 8 June, a combined Blueland Police and UNMIB Police operation

struck a major blow against arms smugglers. _____________________. It appears

Routine dismounted patrols, conducted at least two to three times a week, are

essential. Although mounted patrols are less risky, they do not provide adequate

presence and they do not build up a relationship with the local

population._______________. The best way to reduce the risk of dismounted patrols

in urban areas is to have more boots on the ground.

A You should take security precautions to protect your troops, but avoiding

dismounted patrols in urban areas is a bad habit and is not force protection.

B If you are attacked, set up an overwatch position, and manoeuvre against the

threat.

C Basically speaking, there are three types of foot patrol: presence patrols,

checkpoints and clearing main supply routes of IEDs.

A checkpoint (CHP) is a manned point used to show presence, control, movement

and check vehicles and pedestrians in order to prevent the smuggling of weapons and

explosives. ____________________. Static CHPs are deployed at fixed locations and

troops who man the CHP will live at the position.

A CHPs should not be visible form a long way off to avoid vehicles taking

alternative

routes.

Task 3 Put the sentences on armoured vehicle formations into the correct order (1–9) as
they would appear in a text. The first sentence has been done for you.

A

The column formation is used when speed is an important factor and also

when the platoon is moving through restrictive terrain such as a road, track,

forest or narrow valley.

B

It is the best formation to meet every possible situation as it allows excellent

firing to the front and good firing to the flanks.

C

The echelon formation is again used in open terrain where contact with the

enemy is likely and the platoon needs to protect an exposed flank.

D

Excellent control and protection is provided, but firepower to the front is

limited.

E

However, in restricted terrain, and where contact is likely, the vee formation

is

used.

F

It is a variation of the column and it permits good fire to the front and the

flanks.

G

The wedge formation is used when the platoon is moving in open terrain.

The staggered column formation is also used when speed is important, but in

this case contact with the enemy is possible.
