Origin
distal part of superior and lateral surfaces
of calcaneus, lateral talocalcaneal
ligament, and apex of inferior extensor
retinaculum
Insertion
By four tendons to 1st through 4th digits.
The most medial slip, also known as the
extensor hallucis brevis, insrts into the
dorsal surface of the base of the proximal
phalanx of the great toe; the other three
tendons join lateral sides of tendons of
extensor digitorum longus to 2nd, 3rd, and
4th digits
Actions
Extends the metatarsophalangeal joints of
the 1st through 4th digits; assists in
extending the interphalangeal joints of
2nd, 3rd, 4th digits
