tok Krk nalazi se u Kvarnerskom
zaljevu. Najve}i je otok na
Jadranu, povr{ine 409,9 km2.

Najvi{i vrh: Obzova (569 m). Oko otoka
se nalazi dvadesetak oto~i}a, hridi i grebena:
Prvi}, Galun, Zec, Plavnik, Kormati,
Ko{ljun, Sv. Marko i dr. U 68 naselja na
otoku `ivi 16.402 stanovnika.
Reljef je kr{ki, sa zanimljivim kr{kim
oblicima: {piljama i pe}inama (Biserujka
kod Dobrinja), dolcima i {krapama.
Sredi{njim dijelom Krka pru`aju se plodna
polja: Omi{aljsko, Dobrinjsko, Vrbni~ko i
Ba{}ansko.
Obala je dobro razvedena, s mnogim zaljevi-
ma, uvalama i prirodnim {ljun~anim
pla`ama. Najve}i zaljevi su Soline (ljekovito
blato) i Puntarska draga.
Klima: Ugodna i blaga mediteranska
klima. Prosje~na ljetna temperatura zraka
22,8 °C, mora 23 - 25 °C.
Glavni vjetrovi: bura, jugo i maestral.
Prema broju sun~anih sati u godini
(2.500), Krk se ubraja u najsun~anije
dijelove Europe.
Vode: Na otoku se nalaze dva jezera: Jezero
i Ponikva, i tri rijeke: Veli ili Dobrinjski
potok,Vretenica i Vela Rika.
Vegetacija: U sredi{njem i zapadnom dijelu
otoka prevladavaju {ume, te uzgojene kul-
ture mediteranskog vo}a i povr}a,
vinograda i maslinika. Sjeverni i ju`ni Krk
~ine kamenjari i pa{njaci.
Rezervati {umske vegetacije: {ume
hrasta crnike (Quercus ilex) na Glavotoku
i na oto~i}u Ko{ljunu.
Ornitolo{ki rezervati: otok Prvi} i
sjeveroisto~ni strmi dio obale otoka
Krka, na kojima obitavaju bjeloglavi supovi
(Gyps fulvus Habl.).
Posebnost kr~koga krajolika ~ine terasasti
suhozidi (groma~e) i pastirski mrgari,
sa~uvani na kr{evitim zaravnima iznad
Ba{}anske udoline.
E - Briga o o~uvanju i za{titi okoli{a vodi
se neprekidno i sustavno. Potvrda su i
plave zastave: u marini Punat, Veloj
pla`i u Ba{ki, AC Je`evac, pla`a Lukobran,
FKK Politin i pla`a Koralj u Krku.

he Island of Krk is in the Bay of Kvarner
or Quarnero. It is the biggest island in
the Adriatic, with an area of 409.9 square

kilometres. The highest peak is Obzova, at 569 m.
There are some twenty little islands, islets, rocks
and reefs around the main island: Prvi}, Galun,
Zec, Plavnik, Kormati, Ko{ljun and Sv. Marko (St
Mark’s). The population of the island, at the last
count, was 16,402, distributed among 68 settle-
ments.
The relief is of the karst or limestone variety,
with caves and caverns (Biserujka near Dobrinj),
with sinkholes and dolines. The central part of
the island is occupied by fertile fields called,
Omi{alj, Dobrinj,Vrbnik and Ba{ka poljes.
The coast is highly indented, with a great many
bays, coves and naturally pebbly beaches. The
biggest of the bays are Soline (with its medicinal
mud) and Puntarska Draga.
Climate. The island boasts a pleasant and mild
Mediterranean climate.

The average summer

air temperature is 22.8°C, and the sea water
temperature is 23 - 25°C.The main winds come
from the north-east, the south and the west -
the bora, sirocco and maestral. In terms of inso-
lation, Krk is one of the most favoured parts of
Europe, with over 2,500 hours of sun a year.
Water features. There are two lakes on the
island, called Jezero and Ponikva, and three
rivers: the Veli or Dobrinja Brook, the Vretenica
and the Vela Rika.
Plant life. In the central and western part of
the island there are predominantly woods, along
with cultivated Mediterranean fruit and vegeta-
bles, vineyards and olive groves. Northern and
southern Krk are given over to stony areas and
rough pasture land.
Forest reserves. There are Quercus ilex, or
holm or evergreen oak, at Glavotok and on the
little island of Ko{ljun.
Bird sanctuaries. The island of Prvi} and the
north east steep slopes of the coast, where the
griffon vulture resides (Gyps fulvus Habl).
A particular feature of the Krk landscape
consists of the thick drystone walls or groma~e,
and the shepherds’ stone-built folds on the
plateau area above the Ba{ka valley.

of the environment is ongoing and systematic.
Proof of this is given by the blue pennants in the
Punat Marina, the Big Beach at Ba{ka, AC
Je`evac, beach Lukobran, FKK Politin and beach
Koralj in Krk.

Sagra|en na Veloj steni, 85 metara nad morem, grad
dominira gotovo tri kilometra dugim Omi{aljskim zaljevom.

Omi{alj stands on Vela stena, a cliff 85 metres above
sea level, dominating the almost three kilometre long
Omi{alj Bay. It is the first settlement on the island
after Krk Bridge (2 km back), and Rijeka Airport is
also in the vicinity.

A settlement on the north west part of the island

In a wide bay on the north west coast of the island,
15 km south of Krk Bridge. It is the centre of the
Duba{nice area, which was named after the luxuriant
oak forests (dub being a Slavonic root for oak).

Porat-Vanta~i}i (3 km from Malinska) has a Third
Order Franciscan monastery and the St Mary
Magdalene Church from 1500.

This spot lies in the south east of the island and is 37
km from Krk Bridge. It stands on a 48 metre high cliff
over the sea. It is a wine-growing area and famed for
the local wine called Vrbni~ka `lahtina.

A city and port on the western side of the island,
25 kilometres from Krk Bridge.

A one-time

Roman municipality and centre of the Frankopans,
the dukes of Krk. This is the administrative, political,
economic and religious centre of the island.

GLAVOTOK

A cape just opposite the island of Cres, 17 km
north west of Krk. A forest of holm oak (1
hectare) is a forest vegetation reserve. By the
Church of the Immaculate Conception (1277), a
Third Order Franciscan monastery was built in
the 15th century.

Punat is situated on the south west coast of the
island, 35 kilometres from Krk bridge, in the broad
and sheltered bay called Puntarska Draga. Punat is
the greatest nautic center in Croatia and well
known for the production of high quality olive oil.

A fishing village 10 kilometres south of Punat. Its
greatest value lies in the unspoiled nature, pebbe-
bly beach, stone-built sheep folds, stone desert
and cliffs.

Nalazi se na krajnjem jugoistoku otoka (43 km od Kr~kog
mosta). Naselje zanimljive primorske arhitekture prote`e se
du` gotovo 2 km duge {ljun~ane pla`e, koja je u{la u red najljep{ih
pla`a na svijetu.

U neposrednoj blizini Ba{ke (4 km). Kroz naselje prolazi 45. para-

BATOMALJ

Nalazi se u Ba{}anskoj udolini. Crkva na uzvisini poznato je
oto~no Marijansko sveti{te Majke Bo`je Gori~ke.

JURANDVOR

Smje{ten u plodnom Ba{}anskom polju (2 km sjeverno od
Ba{ke). Poznat po najzna~ajnijem hrvatskom glagoljskom
spomeniku, Ba{}anskoj plo~i (oko 1100. g.), koja se nalazi u
ranoromani~koj Crkvi sv. Lucije u Jurandvoru, tel. 860-184.

Nalazi se na sjeveroistoku otoka (21 km od Kr~kog mosta), na
brijegu 200 m iznad mora odakle se pru`a pogled na Kvarnerski
zaljev. Prvi put se spominje u glagoljskoj Darovnici slavnoga
Dragoslava, datiranoj 1. sije~nja 1100. godine. Obiluje brojnim kul-
turno povijesnim znamenitostima.

Smje{teno na sjeveroistoku otoka, nasuprot Crikveni~koj rivijeri,
6 km jugoisto~no od Dobrinja (26 km od Kr~kog mosta). Uz
ribarstvo i pomorstvo, kao tradicionalne djelatnosti, [ilo se
razvija i kao privla~no mjesto za odmor.

SOLINE, KLIMNO i ^I@I]I

Manja naselja u neposrednoj blizini Dobrinja, smje{tena du`
prostranog zaljeva Soline, poznatog po predromanskim
solanama i ljekovitom blatu za lije~enje kostobolje. U Klimnu se
nalazi sidri{te za brodice i brodogradili{te.

Ba{ka is at the extreme south east end of the island,
43 from Krk Bridge. A settlement of an interesting
maritime architecture, it stretches along the almost 2
kilometre long strand, reckoned one of the world’s
finest beaches.

In the immediate vicinity of Ba{ka (4 kilometers). The
45th parallel goes through the settlement.

BATOMALJ

This lies in the Ba{ka valley. A church on an eminence
is a well-known Marian shrine, Our Lady of Gorica.

JURANDVOR

This is located in fertile Ba{ka polje (2 km north of
Ba{ka). It is famed in Croatian cultural history for the
ancient stone-tablet with its Glagolitic inscription (ca 1100)
that was found in the Early Romanesque St Lucy’s
Church, tel. 860-184.

Dobrinj lies at the north eastern end of the island,
some 21 kilometres from Krk Bridge, and is the only
centre in the island that is not located alongside the
sea. It is first mentioned in a Glagolitic script written
deed of gift by the famous Dragoslav,dated 1 January 1100.

Located in the north east of the island, looking onto
the Crikvenica Riviera on the mainland, 6 kilometres
south east from Dobrinj (26 kilometres from Krk
Bridge). As well as its traditional fishing and seafaring,
[ilo is also developing into a pleasant holiday spot.

SOLINE, KLIMNO and ^I@I]I

Smaller settlements in the immediate vicinity of
Dobrinj, located along the spacious Soline Bay, known
for its pre-Roman salt pans and its medicinal mud for
the treatment of bone ache. There are an anchorage
for small boats and a shipyard in Klimno.

plemenima Japoda i Liburna, te roman-
skom stanovni{tvu, u sedmom se stolje}u

ve}inskim stanovni{tvom na otoku.

Sedam povijesnih oto~kih ka{tela

danas je sedam administrativnih jedinica:
grad Krk i op}ine: Omi{alj, Malinska,
Punat, Ba{ka,Vrbnik i Dobrinj.

Sedam je varijacija ~akavskog narje~ja

hrvatskog jezika. Sedam je obi~aja,
plesova i narodnih no{nji.

Pu~ko glazbalo sopile prastari je

duha~ki instrument, koji je i danas sas-
tavni dio svih oto~kih sve~anosti, ~esto
vezanih uz crkvene blagdane i svece
za{titnike pojedinih mjesta.

Bogatstvo oto~nog folklora svake se

godine prezentira na ljetnom Festivalu
kr~koga folklora i Smotri sopaca otoka
Krka.

Poznati su koledvarski obi~aji u

karnevalskom razdoblju, Stomorina (uz
blagdan Vele Gospe) u Omi{lju, pastirski
obi~aj razgon (prve nedjelje u srpnju) u
Vrbniku i brojni drugi.

Tradicijski na~in `ivota oto~ana vezan

je uz more (ribarstvo, pomorstvo,
brodogradnja), poljoprivredu i sto~arstvo,
napose ov~arstvo, koji su se, uz ostale
djelatnosti novijeg datuma, zadr`ali na
otoku do danas.

nd the life of the Island of
Krk can be followed
through the symbolism of

the number seven. In the seventh
century, the Illyrian tribes of the
Japods and Liburnians and the
Latin population were joined by
the Croats, who gradually became
the majority population of the
island.

The seven historical castles of

the island are today its seven
administrative centres: the city of
Krk and the communes of
Omi{alj, Malinska, Punat, Ba{ka,
Vrbnik and Dobrinj.

There are seven various of the

Chakavian dialect of Croatian
(spoken here). There are seven
customs, dances and costumes.

The vernacular instrument called

sopile is an ancient wind instru-
ment, and today is an integral part
of island festivities, often linked
with the church holidays and the
patron saints of individual places.

The richness of the island folk

tradition is presented each year
in the summer Festival of Folk
Traditions and at the Sopile
Players of the Island of Krk
Review.

Some of the well known tradi-

tional customs are the singing
customs during the period of
Carnival, the Stomorina accompa-
nying the feast of the Assumption
in Omi{alj, the shepherds’ custom
called razgon, the first Sunday in
July, in Vrbnik, among others.

The traditional way of life is

linked to the sea (fishing, seafaring,
shipbuilding), agriculture, stock
raising, particularly sheep rearing,
which have been retained to this
day, and are now accompanied by
some other activities.

i {koljke i danas su nezamjenjivi u
doma}oj kuhinji oto~ana, kao i
mnoge vrste priloga od povr}a.
Sve naravno pripremljeno i
za~injeno kr~kim maslinovim
uljem izvrsne kakvo}e.

Blagdanski objed gotovo uvijek

}e uklju~iti i jela od doma}eg
tijesta ({urlice, makaruni, njoki) s
razli~itim umacima, a posebno je
cijenjena i kr~ka janjetina, doma}i
ov~ji sir i pr{ut.

Sva se ta izvorna kr~ka jela nude

i na jelovnicima stotinjak oto~kih
restorana, konoba i drugih ugos-
titeljskih objekata, koji tako|er
pripremaju i nude jela interna-
cionalne kuhinje. Gastro-ponuda
jedan je od najja~ih aduta kr~kog
gostoprimstva i turizma.

Oto~ani }e uz to popiti ~a{u

doma}eg vina. Preporu~ujemo
izvorno suho bijelo vino s kon-
troliranim geografskim porijeklom
- Vrbni~ku `lahtinu.

Od gro`|a se pripremaju i

razli~ite vrste doma}e rakije, s ili
bez aromati~nog bilja, koju, prema
obi~aju, uz suhe smokve, oto~ani
nude kao znak dobrodo{lice.

name that Krk, because of its
wealth of produce from land and

sea, was given back in ancient times.

The fresh fish, the shrimp and other

crustaceans and shellfish are today a
must in the local cuisine, as are many
kinds of vegetable dishes. All this is
prepared with Krk olive oil, of
superlative quality.

A festive day lunch is almost bound

to include food using local pasta,
called {urlice, makaroni and njoki, with
various different kinds of sauce, and a
particular value is placed on Krk lamb,
the local sheep’s cheese, and prosciutto.

All these original dishes are to be

found on the tables and menus of a
hundred island restaurants and tav-
erns, which also of course offer the
standard international cuisine. The
wining and dining is one of the
strongest of aces in the hand of the
Krk hospitality industry.

With all this, the island people are

fond of taking a glass of locally pro-
duced wine. We can thoroughly rec-
ommend the vernacular dry white
wine with its own appellation con-
trolée - Vrbni~ka `lahtina.

Various kinds of local grappa are also

made from grapes, with or without
aromatic herb flavourings; according
to local custom, this, together with
dried figs, is offered to newly arriving
guests by way of welcome.
