Subject: To devastate Sergeants' mess by a fire
Date: 17 th October 2007
On Monday 16th October about 09.00 our Sergeants' mess in Fort Jackson was devastated by a fire.
One soldier saw a smoke in the east part of the building near the kitchen about 09.15. He called a fire brigade about 09.25. The fire brigade arrived about 09.40 when the fire took up a dinning room and a bar. Soldiers tried to help to firemen but all workforces were not sufficient. In the end the dinning room, the bar and five likving quarters were completely destroyed.
There is suspicion of arson. The case is being investigated by captain Derks and me. There are not two soldiers in our barrack, so we looked for them.
Actually we know that two warrant officers and one senior NCO are badly wounded. Two civilian were injured. All these people were moved to hospital. Their life is not in dangerous.
In this time I and my commander captain Derk have to find a place when soldiers could eat. We thing that a uniform store will be the best to this aim. To transfer equipments and to prepare this place to the issue of meals take all day. Temporarily soldiers eat outside.
In conclusion this incident I have to write that losses could be lesser. In my opinion the duty service is responsible for this emergency because their reaction was too belated. Besides that, there are not any arent system in this mess. This fact caused the large delay in the beginning this action.
