Chapter 1
Lizzy was a debt collector and bill processor for a prestigious group of psychiatrists. Her days were filled with negotiations of bills for people whose lives had been wrecked by drugs, alcohol, tragedy or abuse. Control was her main function in life. She dealt with people whose lives had no control in it, so she had to be strong for them. Weakness of any kind was not acceptable. Weakness meant failure to Lizzy, and that was not in her vocabulary. Addicts knew how to try and manipulate people, so the doctors encouraged the patients to face their bills as part of the healing process. Dr. Lucas had trained her well in knowing which patients to push and when to let them go. Lizzy was an excellent communicator, and she strived to please the doctors and help the clients along the way.
Dr. Lucas had been a friend of her father's, and she had known him all her life. His daughter Charlotte was Lizzy's best friend. Dr. Lucas saw Lizzy as a capable young girl, so as soon as she graduated from college he offered her a job. She had worked her way up from receptionist, and she was grateful for the opportunity. Lizzy did not come from a wealthy home - her family was a typical middle class suburban family in North Dallas. She had always loved acting, and ended up with a degree in Theatre from University of Texas at Dallas. It was a state school, but it was very demanding. Upon graduation she saw no need to leave Dallas. It was her home, and she started doing regional theatre in Dallas. She was being cast in roles as often as she wanted a part. Her job paid her bills nicely, and the theatre gave her the creative release she needed.
Lizzy loved a challenge, and the clients and the group of seventeen psychiatrists gave her that. The inpatients came to see her as a part of their process of discharge from the hospital. In severe cases, she did not have to meet with the patients if they were still considered unstable. The outpatient clinic was run by the doctors, and most got payments up front. Most outpatients never saw Lizzy. Once a week she did all of billing and charges for both clinics. That was her fun day - no clients, just bill and run the program. It was on Friday, and she could wear jeans, because the paper would go wild at times, and you usually found her in a sea of bills. The rest of the week was filled up with meetings with patients (and their families, if necessary), and calls to and from patients already discharged. It was a stressful job. She impressed the doctors with her care of patients and her dedication to her job. She saw each patient as an individual, and she knew his or her diagnosis. She was bound to the confidentiality of each patient. There was a distance from them - there had to be, or else control could not be maintained.
As is customary, celebrities and their families came to the facility for inpatient and outpatient treatment. The staff was informed that no patient would receive "special" treatment, no matter what their position or celebrity status. It was forbidden for any staff member to fraternize with any patient or any member of the patient's family. Lizzy was so driven that it had never occurred to her to think of seeing someone outside the clinic. She had her job, and her true passion was acting. Everything else was a lost cause. There was no time for dating, and she could not imagine letting anyone close to her. She spent her days with sick, helpless people, and her nights enjoying her passion. There was nothing missing in her life - or so she thought.
***************
William Darcy was a successful business owner of a consulting firm that helped to provide corporate clients with computer training and maintenance. He was wealthy, and he came from what was commonly known in Dallas as old money.
The rich in Dallas were of two classes: old money and new money. The new money was easy to spot. They drove red Porsches and had bleached blonde girlfriends with short dresses and cosmetically enhanced parts of their body. They all looked like cookie cutter images of each other. The new money women usually had beautiful tans, stiletto high heels, and make-up you could see a mile a way. The middle class of Dallas could always tell if a person was new money or old money by their cars and style of clothing. New money people had become rich by scheming or dumb luck - most of them had little intelligence, and even less common sense. With internet companies, product inventions and other get-rich-quick schemes, new money wreaked havoc on society. The middle class resented them, and old money did also. The only way to advance to old money was to marry into it, so the chases began.
Old money does not flaunt its wealth - the wealth is slowly revealed. Old money girls wore Ralph Polo, sweaters tied around their shoulders, and sleek A-line khaki skirts. Their hair was usually long and held back with a simple ponytail or black velvet headband. The only acceptable colors of cars were ones that blended in black, green, blue and white. Old money girls were slightly tan from the pool and the polo games, but a dark tan is bad for the skin, and every girl was taught to take care of their ivory complexions. The cosmetic parts of their bodies were sometimes enhanced, but only a professional could tell. Good doctors reserved their clientele for the old money, because it never stopped coming. Old money girls wore very little make-up, but they had weekly facials, so their skin was flawless.
Old money in Dallas hated the new money set. They gave rich a bad name - they were a flash in the pan. They had no manners or composure, and, believe it or not, old money would rather be around the middle class than new money. At least the middle class was raised in suburban North Dallas and had good schooling and manners. New money was a necessary evil for old money, so there were all smiles at charity events, but everyone knew the truth.
William reeked of old money. He drove a green Jaguar XJ6. His bachelor's degree was from Rice University, a private university that was academically above all the rest in the state. He was trust fund rich. He didn't need to work, but he was a restless soul and needed to be useful to people. After he started his business, he decided that he needed a master's degree from Southern Methodist University. Life had been hard on him. When he was younger, his parents had both been killed in a private plane crash. He had recovered from that tragedy, and kept his sister and his business his first priorities.
Georgiana Darcy was sweet and shy. When her parents had been killed, she had taken it hard. She had always been doted on as the only daughter of a prestigious family in Turtle Creek. It had been her senior year. William was old enough to become her guardian, and their family attorney had made it possible for William and Georgiana to stay as safe as possible. William felt Georgiana should go to Southern Methodist University for college - it was about ten miles away from the Italian marble style home they shared. It was great school, and most of all, to William, she was safe there. Only the richest and the smartest could attend, and as long as she lived at home she was not exposed to boys with unsavory desires.
One day, while preparing a special dinner for William, she ran into George Wickham. He had been their servant's son. Wickham's father had died tragically from cancer while still employed by Darcy's parents. In William's father's will, he was given $100,000 to compensate for George having no family. Wickham had taken the money with elation. William had hoped he would use it to attend college or put it in a trust fund, but George had better plans. The Dallas night scene was wild, and a man with money had no problem spending all of it on liquor, clothing, food and, most especially, women. Women were a magnet to a guy with money to burn. Every checkbook has a limit though, and in the space of less than a year, his well was completely dry. He still wanted to be in Highland Park, so he took a job at Simon David's - an exclusive grocery store where caviar was abundant. He could brush up against the rich and their young daughters. He was living in a poor man's heaven, and he knew it.
***************
Lizzy was having a typical day at work. There had been a drug addict who said he wasn't selling drugs anymore, so money was hard to come by. The doctor that specialized in addiction was tough. Paying your treatment cost was part of accepting your responsibility for your addiction. It was part of the healing process every addict went through. The client knew Lizzy and Dr. Finch - he knew he had ten days to get Lizzy a payment of some kind. He would, because he didn't want to lie to her again. She would not give up on him, and he knew it. She loved dealing with patients, and really, they considered her their confidant at times.
At 11:00 she took her turn at relief switchboard. Someone had to be there during lunch, primarily to screen for suicidal cases, but it was usually a quiet time at the switchboard, mostly patients asking for their doctor's voice mail. The receptionist told Lizzy a favorite client had died today, because he had gone on a drinking binge and could not recover. With sadness, Lizzy recalled her last phone call with him - he said he was clean and sober. Addiction can be so hard to treat.
Lizzy answered the telephone. There was a voice that commanded attention, and did not stumble or stutter. He proceeded to request her to put him through immediately to Dr. Lucas. Lizzy asked if he was a current patient of Dr. Lucas's.
Darcy replied," Certainly not."
With the death of her favorite client still in mind, Lizzy wanted to be careful, so she asked, "Well, sir, is this an emergency?"
Darcy thought, What kind of person does she think I am? "No, I need to talk to Dr. Lucas immediately about a family member."
"Oh, I am sorry. So is this family member seeing Dr. Lucas?” Lizzy responded.
"Really, just put me through to Dr. Lucas, and what is your name may I ask?"
Darcy snapped back.
Lizzy knew this guy was having a bad day, but she knew it wasn't an emergency, so she followed her procedures. "Sir, my name is Elizabeth Bennet. I can transfer you to Dr. Lucas's voice mail immediately. He will return your call as soon as possible. Can I transfer you, sir?"
Darcy by this time was very angry and raised his voice. "Ms. Bennet, I am William Darcy of Highland Park. I own Darcy and Associates. Surely you know who I am?"
Lizzy inwardly giggled, I know exactly who you are, a client on the phone being rude, but answered, "Mr. Darcy, Dr. Lucas requests all patients to leave a message for him on his voice mail. Can I transfer your call now, Mr. Darcy?”
Darcy replied, "Ms. Bennet, you may transfer me now, but this will not be our last conversation."
Those words rung clear as a bell. Darcy was not finished with Elizabeth, though she was sure Dr. Lucas would never agree to see Mr. Darcy's family member. Dr. Lucas was very particular about his clients - he wanted patients that did not expect special treatment. In the psychiatrist's situation, there was no time for patients or family members with big egos. Lizzy was confidant that Dr. Lucas would meet Mr. Darcy and suggest another clinic. She was sure she would never speak to Mr. Darcy again.
****************
Georgiana was a broken spirit after her ordeal with Wickham. She had seen so much tragedy that it did not take much for George to push her over the edge. Her parents had always protected her in a cocoon, then William took over. She was clueless about life and love. Wickham had pursued her. At first she thought he was just being nice. One day, when she stopped by the store to pick up some Brie, George grabbed her arm and begged her to meet him on campus, away from her brother. She knew William would be furious, but she remembered George as a happy childhood memory, and she was strangely drawn to him. She was playing with fire, and she was the last to know.
Wickham tried to elope with Georgiana to Las Vegas. By the time they were waiting their turn at the chapel, Wickham had found out that Georgiana's money was in a trust fund until she was thirty. William had figured if someone tried to marry her for money at age thirty, she would be grounded and truly understand love. He was right. Wickham ran right out of the chapel, grabbed a taxi and went straight to the airport for parts unknown. He had changed flights so often, he was untraceable as far as William knew. Georgiana called William, crying and begging him to come and get her. William thought once she was back home she would be all right.
By the time William Darcy had called Dr. Lucas, Georgiana was deep into depression. When Darcy left his voice mail for Dr. Lucas, he was clear. "I want your private number. Ms. Bennet was rude, and I must not deal with such incompetence."
Dr. Lucas returned his call. "Mr. Darcy, no patient gets a private number at my clinic or hospital. Patients must have to face their problems, and, Mr. Darcy, Ms. Bennet is a fine employee and understands psychiatric protocol. She has never had a problem with a patient before, and she does as the doctors here request. Now Georgiana's first appointment will be February 12th at 10:00 a.m.”
Georgiana and William showed up for the appointment, and she met with Dr. Lucas. Georgiana needed Dr. Lucas, and he wanted to help her. He knew his problem was William Darcy. Afterward, when he met with William, Dr. Lucas agreed to see Georgiana on an outpatient basis. He warned William he would need to give Georgiana time to heal, and to trust him as a doctor. William acknowledged Dr. Lucas was right. Then Dr. Lucas gave William the news he dreaded: if Georgiana did not respond to outpatient treatment, inpatient treatment was a possibility. William hung his head and fought back the tears. His baby sister had lost so much. Wickham had ruined Georgiana's life. She was in such pain - if only he could fix it.
Chapter 2
April 20th
Mr. Darcy was coming to pick up Georgiana after her admission for severe depression. He knew her struggle wasn't over but after six weeks of treatment of inpatient, William felt happy to bring her home. William's intention this day was to have everything positive happen, his primary goal was to keep Georgiana stress free until she was safely at home. He walked into the reception area of the clinic administration offices and asked the receptionist who he needed to see in order to complete Georgiana's discharge. The receptionist said someone would see Mr. Darcy shortly. Lizzy opened the door and called, " William Darcy". He looked up the voice was vaguely familiar but where? He rose up out of his chair and walked toward the beautiful vision before him. Lizzy was five feet and six inches with soft brown hair that was simple and framed her face. She was wearing an Ann Taylor suit in bronze and her eyes seemed to glow. He awkwardly reached his hand out without speaking, she said, "Mr. Darcy, I am Elizabeth Bennet." That was when he knew this glorious vision of professionalism was the woman two months earlier that made him so angry.
Darcy had recovered his composure and said, " I am William Darcy, Ms. Bennet."
Lizzy shook his hand and said, " Mr. Darcy please follow me to my office."
All the anger from their phone conversation two months ago suddenly reared its ugly head. He followed her and took his seat in the chair across from her desk. She sat down gingerly, making sure not to wrinkle her skirt.
"Mr. Darcy you are here regarding your sister's bill, I believe" Lizzy stated.
"Yes, yes and I would like to pay this bill in full today," Mr. Darcy replied.
Elizabeth did not remember his face so she answered him as any client, "Mr. Darcy as I would like to accept your check for full payment. That is not possible today. Our billing system runs on Friday, I will mail your bill in full then. You may pay the remainder of the balance, when you receive your final bill.
Darcy took in breath and exhaled as he spoke, "Surely, Ms. Bennet you are capable of doing a manual bill. If not why would Dr. Lucas give this office and title? It could not be that difficult, I want my sister to be able to walk out of here and have no memory of this place after today. Do you understand the importance of this small favor?
She stared at him, she had been insulted before and dealt with demanding patients and their families, but this rich snob took the cake. Mr. Darcy had never heard one very important word in his life and she was thrilled she was one who got to inform him of the word's existence.
"Mr. Darcy, No, I can not do you a favor. Your sister stayed here six weeks and she cannot leave here with no memory of it. She could have charges that the nurses will post on her bill this afternoon. My title means that I am responsible for correctly billing each and every account accurately. On Friday I will complete your sister's bill accurately.”
Darcy sneered back at her, "Ms. Bennet do you know you are infuriating me?"
Lizzy sneered back just as hard, "Yes, sir I am fully aware you are angry with me."
Darcy hated losing a battle but Lizzy would not budge and he had never seen a woman more determined so he retreated. " Well Ms. Bennet since you are not willing to help tell me my sister's balance and I will write you a check. I am requesting that you hold her Friday bill until I personally call you. Do you understand my request?
"Yes, sir here is her balance as of last Friday and I will wait for your call," Lizzy calmly answered even though she wanted to be rid of him as soon as possible.
"Well, Ms. Bennet Good Day," and with that he left.
Lizzy began to relax, she grabbed a coke out of the kitchen refrigerator and told the receptionist she needed fifteen minutes for a quick walk. She flew thru the back door and sashayed down the hall full speed, her aim was to calm down. Mr. Darcy had made her livid that he insulted her intelligence, she had a college degree and she knew how to do her job. How dare he, what an ungrateful man as she shook her head she turned the corner and literally bumped into his chest.
William stammered, " Ms. Bennet, I am sorry I didn't see you."
She blushed and looked away," I am sorry Mr. Darcy, I was needing some fresh air," she saw the stairs and made a run for the door. William watched her bolt to the door she was a pistol but her hips swayed when she walked and her heels clicked and then her back slit in her skirt was deep enough to catch a glimpse of graceful legs that looked life they went on forever. He had been so irritated by her manner he hadn't remembered how beautiful she was. Yes she was a striking young woman wait Darcy she is an office clerk probably with no education why waste your time. No she was not someone he would allow himself to even ponder and with that he got on the elevator.
She was up twelve flights and if she had her running shoes on she could have gone all the way down. So she decided to walk down two and catch the elevator, Mr. Darcy would be down on the first level by then. The hospital and the clinic offices were part of an office complex, Lizzy walked the perimeter during her breaks, it was a nice distance but not too far. She usually put on running shoes, but today in her hurry, she forgot them. Lizzy clicked her heels down two flight of stairs and out the stair well around the corner to the elevator and pushed the button. The doors opened she was again staring in the one face she did not want to see William Darcy.
"Mr. Darcy," she courteously acknowledged. He looked at her quietly for the second time in his life. She had eyes that went through his soul, she is a beautiful woman.
It was obvious to Lizzy by now, she could not run from this man anymore he was around every corner. She might as well know where he was, it was only ten more flights and then freedom. As she glided past him, he smelled a whiff of sandalwood and freesia. He did not know the scent, but was captivated by it anyway. She pushed the first floor button the elevator started but suddenly stopped between floors three and four. She looked at Darcy, he looked at the control panel area and then like five year olds they both looked up at the floor indicator hoping it would move. It didn't happen, they both grabbed for the elevator phone, Darcy was fastest and he told the operator they were stuck. Lizzy looked down at her shoes, her feet were aching and she had a three hour rehearsal for Pippin tonight she reached down took off her heels and wiggled her toes. He watched with a great deal of interest she didn't even notice he was in the elevator. She slowly sat down put her legs out straight and sipped her Coke. She was finally relaxed, he carefully took off his jacket and folded it neatly and laid it over his arm. He realized she has softened somehow, she seemed content. He looked like a waiter, he sat down and laid his jacket across his lap, oh look relaxed. He wasn't relaxed at all. She looked at him and giggled, she couldn't help it she had spent her whole break running from him to be stuck in an elevator with him.
He looked up from his jacket, "Ms. Bennet, do you find this funny?"
She answered, "Well, yes I do, I think as much as I irritate you there is no exit and I am sure we both would prefer one."
He flashed a grin and looked into her eyes, "Ms. Bennet I do realize the irony of our situation and I hope we are delayed for a short duration."
He lied he wanted nothing more than to figure this complicated woman out. He knew he shouldn't watch her, but he could not his eyes away. She didn't seem to even notice him three feet away. This left him with a feeling of a" fly on the wall". He watched her wiggle her toes, she seemed to be in another place. She was a very different woman than her office, he realized under any other circumstance he would want to find out all about her. What was it that had her someplace else? He had his PDA and should do some work but he succumbed to the glorious vision in front of him. Not once had she noticed him staring at her. He finally cleared his throat, pulled out his PDA and started going over his schedule for tomorrow.
She had been singing her favorite song, the theme song of Pippin, Rivers belong where they can ramble, eagles belong where they can fly, I've got to be where my spirit can run free, got to find my corner of the sky. It was a beautiful song too bad the lead was a male part all she had was back up vocals, but the lyrics resonated in her, she wanted to be free to find her corner of the sky. She leaned her head back and went over her monologue for Taming Of The Shrew audition. With a fulltime job and a running play there were few moments to prepare for an audition. She busied herself with the words she knew so well:
No shame but mine: I must, forsooth, be forced
To give my hand opposed against my heart
Unto a mad-brain rudesby full of spleen;
Who woo'd in haste and means to wed at leisure.
I told you, I, he was a frantic fool,
Hiding his bitter jests in blunt behavior:
And, to be noted for a merry man,
He'll woo a thousand, 'point the day of marriage,
Make feasts, invite friends, and proclaim the banns;
Yet never means to wed where he hath woo'd.
Now must the world point at poor Katharina,
And say, 'Lo, there is mad Petruchio's wife,
If it would please him come and marry her!'
The sudden noise of his throat brought her back to the elevator, she glanced up to see him holding his PDA and she took another sip of her Coke. God he was so boring even in an elevator he is working, does this man ever relax?
He was through checking his schedule and decided to see what she was doing. He sneeked a look and she was again with her eyes closed, somewhere else. He wondered what vision or place could engross her so. She had seemed all business in the office and now she looked like a woman after a day of shopping. In an eerie way he saw a hint of Georgiana in her. Georgiana always had that satisfied look after a trip to Neiman Marcus, he did not comprehend the look, but it was a familiar quiet satisfaction. To his surprise she glanced up and her eyes caught his gaze.
He finally spoke someone had to," Ms. Bennet are you comfortable? Can I help you with anything?"
This man confounded Lizzy, "Mr. Darcy, I was just thinking about......"
All of the sudden, the elevator jerked, she jumped up put on her heels and jacket. Darcy was competitive and not wanting to be beat any thing he sprang to his feet and put on his jacket.
He said, " Well I guess I will be able to take my sister home. I am sorry Ms. Bennet you were saying?"
Lizzy knew he didn't care about her thought, "Mr. Darcy it is no matter, you can see your sister in a moment and the patients are probably waiting for me, I will hold your bill, until you contact me."
Darcy was amazed she could transform into her professional tone so easily and she did remember his request. Perhaps she was college educated probably junior college business classes. " Thank you Ms. Bennet I hope you haven't been too uncomfortable."
She always had patient irritations with her job. "Mr. Darcy, it comes with my job, at times I am unpopular, but in order for the clinic to succeed, I do what is necessary."
With that the doors that blocked them before opened and both were relieved to be free. He said, " Goodbye Ms. Bennet"
"Goodbye Mr. Darcy" and up the stairs she climbed.
With that the doors that blocked them before opened and both were relieved to be free. He said, " Goodbye Ms. Bennet"
"Goodbye Mr. Darcy" and up the stairs she climbed.
Chapter 3
Georgiana was home at last. Six weeks away from home and she had much different perspectives. Georgiana had learned a lot about herself. She dreaded what she had to do.
William knew she was better, but he treated her like a Faberge egg.
William needed to give her space and allow her the opportunity of making mistakes. Problems, trials and crises make a person stronger. William had taken every problem, trial and crisis and put them into beautifully wrapped packages. She had never really struggled. He had a bubble around her, so when Wickham left, the bubble had burst and she landed on concrete.
William, as part of her therapy, had gone to family counseling, and he had listened to the therapist. He nodded when he was supposed to, but the therapist and Georgiana knew her biggest challenge was William. She had to break free and learn to fly. It was past time, she was nineteen.
Georgiana took a deep breath. The therapist said sooner rather than later. She needed to establish their relationship right then. "William, I need to speak to you," Georgiana started.
"Of course, Georgiana, what is bothering you? Can I help?" William answered.
"See William, that is the problem. You need to quit helping me. I need to be a person with the ability to fix her own problems. You don't let me do that," Georgiana said as she watched his face.
William was confused. Georgiana couldn't be upset with him. Wickham was the real problem here, not him. "Georgiana, I can help, let me help you. What is really bothering you?"
Georgiana had tried subtle. The therapist had warned her not to back down from William understanding her needs. "William, you are! There, I said it. I love you and I don't want to hurt you, but I need to grow up. I am going to date and meet girlfriends for movies and dinner just like everyone else. I need you to let me go, William."
William Darcy wanted to wring the doctor's neck "Is this what the doctor said is needed? We obviously need a new therapist."
"No, William. I had a lot of time to think and write letters about what put me in George's arms. I know I need some space. I will live here, but I need a life for myself. You only want to work and care for me. I desire one day to marry a man and have children. You need to concentrate on yourself. William, you may have desires that you haven't realized. When was the last time you went on a date?"
William took in a deep breath. "Ok, Georgiana, if you want to date that is fine, I suppose, but what does my social life have anything to do with this? It's been awhile I guess, but I really don't enjoy meeting new people."
"William you are certainly aware of attractive women, are you not? Do you want to die an old bachelor?" Georgiana smiled she knew she had challenged him.
"Georgiana, of course I notice a beautiful woman when I see one, but I have no desire to chase every skirt in Dallas." William was rattled. He couldn't remember his last date. No, it couldn't have been in college.
She smiled. Yes, she had got to him. He was suddenly engrossed in his own thoughts and she was pleased. If William had a girlfriend, she could finally have a life of her own.
********************
Lizzy knew the role of Kathryn in Taming Of The Shrew. Kathryn had edges and emotions that every actress worth her salt wanted to play.
The theatre had added The Taming Of The Shrew as a lark, Dallas always had Shakespeare in the Park during the summer. Those parts were for a traveling troupe who only did Shakespeare.
Lizzy had done her bit parts and even stage crewed. If there wasn't a role she was interested in, she ushered, anything to keep her name in the door. She felt like she had a chance. She had auditioned in college for Kate, but had lost to an actress with a bad temper. It failed in Lizzy's eyes. Kathryn was supposed to end up tamed by her husband. That actress in college was great at being a bitch, but never softened.
Lizzy had taken mental notes - she had to be a bitch and then later soften for her husband. She also had to show chemistry with her husband, or it would not work. The chemistry was the hard part. She had hoped someone good would audition with her. Acting can be very difficult if your partner was flat.
She applied her make-up, ate her sandwich and brushed her teeth. She looked in the mirror to check her bitchy look and make sure her dress looked fine. She had chosen a red silk dress to her calves. She had to stand out and still look Elizabethan, and the right color and length would set the right atmosphere. Her brown hair was pulled up in a loose bun.
She was ready, and she drove to the theatre. Her reading partner was Dan. He was a large guy that stood six feet tall. He had a rugged handsomeness. Dan was a kind teddy bear in real life. Lizzy knew him and was comfortable with him. She had hoped Dan would get the role.
She took a couple slow, cleansing breaths and smiled at Dan. She had the hateful part down. Dan grabbed her arm and she glanced up, he demanded her attention. She quickly changed and softened in his arms. Yes, she did it.
She might not get Kate, but she had done her best. Now all she to do was wait.
She sat down and watched the rest of the auditions. The scene was surreal. Actually, she smiled and chatted with the others, while each one was dying to get the role. Acting is very competitive, and Lizzy couldn't stand being beat more than once. When the director called a break, she jumped up and got Dan a water bottle. She knew he was thirsty.
"Here Dan, thanks for being here. It really helped to have you to play off of" she said.
He replied, "Lizzy, I really hope you get it, you are the only one my wife trusts."
Lizzy laughed, "She is so wise, now if she would just tell the director that!"
The auditions were over. Lizzy was more confused than ever. What did this director want to see? He wasn't showing anything. She kissed Dan goodnight and headed home.
Lizzy hit her door, took off her shoes and jumped into bed. Sleep was needed. She was a nervous wreck. If Dan got Petruchio she wanted Kate worse. She knew they had chemistry, but did the director see that? She tossed and turned and finally fell asleep.
The next morning, the alarm went off so early. Lizzy was a fog of a person. She staggered to the shower, hot water would wake her up. This was Friday, she pulled on jeans and a lime green shirt. Dallas traffic is fast on Fridays, most people avoid working. She grabbed her drama/tragedy coffee cup and headed to start billing. There were 60 inpatients today on the census. She had to work fast to update all the charges, if the printer messed up she would need extra time. Today Lizzy would take no calls from patients or personal, they could wait. She was almost ready to start the printer that would pound out the bills, when they called her for lunch. Dr. Lucas had provided a Chinese food luncheon for the workers in the office.
"Ruby, really just let me finish this and I will come," Lizzy says.
"No Lizzy, Mrs. Gardiner and Dr. Lucas said to make sure you come with everyone else. They knew you would try and buy extra time. This is supposed to be a fun day. So we will see you in three, or Mrs. Gardiner will come get you." Ruby shook her head.
The spread was beautiful and filling. Lizzy was glad she came. She didn't get to socialize that often with her coworkers. Everyone had staggered lunches and Lizzy was isolated because she had clients so often.
Ruby was telling her best tale about her famous ex-husband who was a dead beat dad. Ruby was a free spirit with flaming red hair. She was born in Dallas, then traveled the world with her husband. She was left alone with two kids to raise while her ex was traveling to sell records. He had the reputation of a committed husband and father, but Ruby would gladly show you a stack of bounced child support checks.
She was very charming and lived life to please herself now. She was past bitterness, and remembered him as just an idiot from Pleasant Grove. Pleasant Grove is the area in Dallas no one claims to be from. It is considered a low rent poor school area, but Ruby acknowledged her roots with gusto.
"You figure out how to get out of Pleasant Grove or stay poor. Ex and I had no desire to stay white trash," Ruby smiled.
Lizzy laughed. Ruby was the entertainment at most occasions and she knew the music business inside out. Her advice was always, "Stay away from men with big egos. You will get your heart broke, Lizzy." Ruby was not joking.
Lizzy headed back to the bills. She set up the printer and hoped it would behave. It went fast, and with sixty clients, she babysat it for three hours.
Three hours later and a sea of bills, she was stuffing envelopes. Lizzy thought, What is that snob's name with the attitude? On her desk was the sticky with the name William Darcy. How could I forget that name? He is so boring and so full of himself. Oh yes. She pulled his perfect bill with the added charges and slipped it into an envelope. She took her pen: Mr. William Darcy. There, now that snob can have his bill.
She hurried to the front. "Ruby, this is a bill for a Mr. William Darcy. Please give to him and take his check. I really don't want to see this guy again, please?"
Ruby was perplexed. Lizzy didn't run from clients. "Okay, Lizzy. Is he really ugly or something?"
Lizzy was contemplating her answer: his attitude is ugly, but he is quite handsome. "Ruby, he is a piece of work, you'll see soon enough. I know you can handle him."
Ruby loved unusual people, and now she was intrigued.
Lizzy got a page to come to the front, and she didn't want to go. It was either her Mom or a patient she didn't want to see.
"Lizzy, Mr. William Darcy called and really wanted to talk to you, I told him you don't accept phone calls on Friday," Ruby said.
Lizzy responded, "Ruby, call him back and tell him he can pick up the envelope or I will mail it, whichever he prefers."
Lizzy's phone rang, "Yes Ruby?"
"Lizzy, Mr. Charming was here and he really wanted to see you, he is quite persuasive. He seemed disappointed you were unavailable. What is wrong with Mr. Charming? He is tall dark and handsome." Ruby hoped Lizzy would tell her the story.
"Ruby, thanks, I am thrilled to avoid him. I will see you on Monday." Lizzy cleaned up her office to go home.
Lizzy was idle on LBJ Freeway. She was hoping for a message from the director of The Taming Of The Shrew.
She came into the apartment. The alarm was beeping. She keyed her numbers and kicked off her shoes. The answering machine was blinking. The phone rang. It was her Mom, asking her if she had a date tonight.
"Mom, really I need to go and get ready for .......think quick Lizzy, something important to Mom but not a date my monthly apartment social. You know, some guys just might have moved in." Lizzy breathed. Mom would let her go for that reason. Lizzy had no intention of attending it, but Jane could supply details that Lizzy could relate to Mom.
"Lizzy now go and make sure to wear lots of make-up and perfume dear, leave the men with a longing for you," Mrs. Bennett said.
"Okay Mom, good bye," Lizzy rushed.
"Good night, Lizzy, and smile please." Mrs. Bennet hung up the phone. Finally, Lizzy was looking at men again. Maybe she would be able to get a man somehow.
Chapter 4
May 5th
William Darcy was successful in business. At Southern Methodist University he had met Charles Bingley. Charles was lively and full of energy - he never met a stranger. He was the opposite of the reserved William Darcy, but he brought out the best in William. William thought so much of Charles he lured him away from the job he had while getting his MBA. They were a great team at work and at play. William knew everyone important in Dallas, and Charles loved meeting everyone. William was brought out around Charles, because Charles insisted everyone must enjoy life.
Charles and his sisters were products of new money. Their dad was a wildcat for an oil company, and struck the black crude. It allowed the three of them to go to college. The one sister married Mr. Hurst, an older man with a huge bank account. Caroline then did the thing she did best - went to work for an oil and gas company called Placid Oil. They understood her eccentric behavior and unusually loud clothing, and she kept her eyes out for the richest oilman she could find. Her real ambition was William Darcy. Marrying him would give her old money status forever. William was, of course, unaware of any designs on him. He liked Charles, and his family was a package deal. Caroline was tall and slender with enormous breasts (artificial, of course). She loved her dark tan and her blonde streaked hair. Her favorite type of clothing was dresses so short, that nothing was left to anyone's imagination.
Charles had worked hard, and was now Darcy and Associates Vice President. He did most of the recruiting of clients, and Darcy was the business type. The clients liked both, but Charles was friendly at all costs. Darcy and Associates grew because of the teamwork Charles and William had. Professionally, Darcy could not have done better without Charles. The only irritant for Darcy was that Charles insisted that William go out and socialize with him. It was torture for Darcy - he couldn't talk business and small talk was tiresome.
Charles loved the ladies and he always found a pretty girl to engage in conversation, which left William with Caroline. Caroline was all right, but not really William's type. At a young age, his parents, particularly his mother, taught him to refrain from dating a girl from a new money background. She had told him that he should follow his heart and not his lusts. A good wife could be found a number of places, but a woman after his money would never be satisfied. William considered his mother an expert on love. Her marriage to his father was very stable and loving. William survived their death because he had received so much love and attention growing up. The Darcys had taught William social manners and etiquette, but most of all, made sure he had enough common sense to take care of himself.
Since the Darcys' death, William had been too busy to even consider dating. He was very popular in college, before life dealt him his detour. He thought one day he would settle down, once Georgiana was on track. Her happiness was much more important to him than his. He would move heaven and earth for her if he could. His needs as a man were not important as long as he kept busy at work and with Georgiana. He could not imagine anything in his life that he actually needed. His business was flourishing and Georgiana was finally getting help. No, life was as it should be - get Georgiana well, and keep the business on track. His life was a neat little package with a tight bow around it to keep everything that way.
***********************
Charles loved the theatre. He read that The Taming Of The Shrew was at Theatre D. Theatre D was the best of the independent theatres in Dallas. Theatre D was a theatre in the round, so there was not a bad seat in the house. The actors are surrounded and the audience sees each other at all times. Here it was that William Darcy, so sure he understood himself and other people, was to see a different Elizabeth Bennet.
Lizzy had found out that she had indeed been cast as Kate with Dan Keith as Petruchio. Rehearsals lasted four weeks, and then the show opened. She had worked hard to be ready. Lizzy was glad to work opposite Dan -he was easygoing and married. The cast was filled with the people Lizzy knew as regulars. Taming Of The Shrew came together easily because everyone really wanted a Shakespearean play to succeed at Theatre D. It was a dream come true for Lizzy to star in one of its productions. Many great actors had started at Theatre D.
Lizzy adored the challenges of this role. Kate is a strong character who basically goes through torture before she can find an identity, a voice, a love for herself. She starts out as immature, raw but independent, with a biting tongue, yet for a lot of the play, she hardly speaks for herself. She has fight scenes, she screams and yells. Kate throws things, and after all of those furious emotions, she is broken down by Petruchio and starvation. Shakespeare wrote passion like few writers could. She falls in love with Petruchio - there are passionate scenes with him. Kate is perceived to be a hated shrew and then she becomes a woman in need of sympathy. She discovers beauty, desire, knowledge of herself, her own freedom, in the most unlikely way. By the end of the play she has been changed from a despised and difficult shrew into a woman speaking in poetry. Petruchio is dashing and yet at times seems heartless and very cruel. Nothing in the play is easy, or easily resolved, yet at the end of their love story the audience must love them both. They travel a road from conflict to what could be freedom or slavery - no one knows but them.
Lizzy had been working hard to get the bitchiness and tenderness at matching levels. If Kate is too bitchy, the actor loses the audience. She has to soften to Petruchio or she is not tamed. John the director told Lizzy she had it down. Dress rehearsal went well. Opening night was technically Thursday, but it was mostly filled with long time patrons, friends and family. Friday and Saturday were the big nights. Friday night came off without a hitch. The play flowed with perfect timing, the set worked, the lights were fine and sound was great. Thunderous applause rang out in the theatre. Lizzy's mother, father and little sister Lydia were there. Mr. Bennet beamed with pride - Lizzy had his love for great literature. Mrs. Bennet was pleased Lizzy finally had a starring role and wondered if Petruchio was single. Lydia, like most fifteen year olds, was bored stiff, but kept an eye out for a cute techie. Lizzy was overjoyed. She knew her dad would love it, but it was so smooth she basked in the moment.
*******************
Charles had bought tickets for his sisters and his brother-in-law, and he had convinced William he should go. William was a patron of Theatre D, but hadn't attended a play all year. Caroline was thrilled with spending a night of theatre with William. Louisa and her husband thought it was best to show support of the arts even though Charles had paid. William was in agony. He knew he should go, but dreaded social events.
Saturday night Lizzy had Jane and Charlotte in the audience. Charlotte had brought her CPA boyfriend, Bill Collins, who was the accountant for Theatre D. Jane had flowers for Lizzy waiting for the curtain call. Lizzy received flowers in her dressing room from the office, her dad and Charlotte. Charlotte's flowers had a card signed, "the calla lilies are in bloom," a quote from Kathryn Hepburn from the classic movie Stage Door. Lizzy adored Kathryn Hepburn and calla lilies - they reminded her of everything great about the Art Deco period. The office flowers were signed "Good Show love the gang." Her dad's flower's card said. "To My Beautiful Lizzy." Lizzy was thrilled to receive so many flowers from the people she loved, this was a night she would remember forever.
Charles picked up Caroline. The Hursts came separately. William insisted on driving himself - he wasn't going to stay any longer than necessary. Caroline was dressed in a bright yellow dress with yellow heels. She stepped out of Charles's BMW looking for William. Charles was in his pin stripe gray suit, his blue eyes sparkled. Mrs. Louisa Hurst, dressed in a red dress, was on the arm of Mr. Hurst in a black suit. William stepped out of his Jaguar in a black Armani suit with Bruno Magli shoes. He spotted Caroline, as she was waving. The theatre was packed when they took their seats. The Hursts were next to each other, with Charles on Louisa's side and next to Caroline. Caroline gazed to her right at William. William studied his program. He couldn't believe his eyes - Elizabeth Bennet as Kate. Dallas was a huge city. He must get this office clerk out of his mind. Surely there was more than one Elizabeth Bennet. No Ms. Bennet was no actress, she is an office clerk, she couldn't possibly perform at this theatre. No, he would not see Elizabeth again.
Caroline batted her spider lashes at William and said, "You are so distracted. Do you want to go to the 8.0 for coffee and dessert after the show? Charles says the cast usually goes there. I know how you hate the night scene, but could you just once for me?"
Darcy looked at his watch, wondering why she was always so boring. "Caroline, the show is starting. We can talk about it at intermission."
Jane, Charlotte and Bill Collins were directly across from Charles. Jane and Charlotte were giggling because Lizzy had no idea about the curtain call flowers. Jane was looking around for someone to give Lizzy the flowers. Bill was the CPA for the theatre and he was also Jane and Lizzy's cousin. She decided she should ask him who could do it. Suddenly, as the lights dimmed, Jane saw Charles in his gray pinstripe suit. He was a blonde dreamboat. She smiled, telling herself she would find him at intermission.
The play started. Darcy's heart pounded. Could Elizabeth be here? No, Dallas was too big. He watched, he waited, and Lizzy took the stage as Kate. Darcy gasped a small breath - the woman he wondered about was in front of his eyes. Yes, Caroline, he would go to the 8.0 tonight. Elizabeth Bennet might be there, anything to gaze on her longer. He knew she was a good actress, only he didn't hear her words. He saw her and was captivated. He felt like a spy. He would gaze at her all night and no one would know why. What luck. Darcy watched as Dan touched Elizabeth. He was amazed at Elizabeth - she was yelling, then crying. She seemed to be a different person than at the office. All that containment, all that passion, he thought. She is so complicated. How does she do Shakespeare and office work too?
The play was going well. Lizzy had peeked earlier and had seen Jane, Charlotte and Bill. There were other people she knew as patrons, but then one man she saw was Mr. Darcy. Oh, no. That kill-joy, that grouch! What on earth is he doing here?
The lights went up, Jane asked Bill who would be a good person to take Lizzy her flowers. Bill knew each patron by the size of their contribution. He whispered a suggestion and she went off in search of him. Charles watched Jane. She was so sweet. He followed her, and he grabbed two glasses of wine, smiled his best smile and introduced himself.
Jane blushed, and murmured she didn't know what. She needed to find that patron, but Charles was more enticing. They sipped wine, and Jane giggled at Charles. He was dashing, he was divine.
"I am sorry, Charles. I must find someone. My sister is in the play. We can talk after it is over, if that is all right." Jane hoped for a yes.
"Oh, Jane, we are going to 8.0 afterwards. Maybe you can come, bring your sister, too." Charles was smitten. Jane was so beautiful and sweet. She was an angel, a vision in a blue dress.
"Sure, I'll see you there later, Charles," Jane responded, and headed to find that rich patron.
*********************
It was the final scene. Lizzy was excited. This was her turn to bring Katharina full circle, and it is very appealing to feel her change. Now came the fun part - Dan and Lizzy were ready.
Katharina Fie, fie! unknit that threatening unkind brow,
And dart not scornful glances from those eyes,
To wound thy lord, thy king, thy governor:
It blots thy beauty as frosts do bite the meads,
Confounds thy fame as whirlwinds shake fair buds,
And in no sense is meet or amiable.
A woman moved is like a fountain troubled,
Muddy, ill-seeming, thick, bereft of beauty;
And while it is so, none so dry or thirsty
Will deign to sip or touch one drop of it.
Thy husband is thy lord, thy life, thy keeper,
Thy head, thy sovereign; one that cares for thee,
And for thy maintenance commits his body
To painful labour both by sea and land,
To watch the night in storms, the day in cold,
Whilst thou liest warm at home, secure and safe;
And craves no other tribute at thy hands
But love, fair looks and true obedience;
Too little payment for so great a debt.
Such duty as the subject owes the prince
Even such a woman oweth to her husband;
And when she is froward, peevish, sullen, sour,
And not obedient to his honest will,
What is she but a foul contending rebel
And graceless traitor to her loving lord?
I am ashamed that women are so simple
To offer war where they should kneel for peace;
Or seek for rule, supremacy and sway,
When they are bound to serve, love and obey.
Why are our bodies soft and weak and smooth,
Unapt to toil and trouble in the world,
But that our soft conditions and our hearts
Should well agree with our external parts?
Come, come, you froward and unable worms!
My mind hath been as big as one of yours,
My heart as great, my reason haply more,
To bandy word for word and frown for frown;
But now I see our lances are but straws,
Our strength as weak, our weakness past compare,
That seeming to be most which we indeed least are.
Then vail your stomachs, for it is no boot,
And place your hands below your husband's foot:
In token of which duty, if he please,
My hand is ready; may it do him ease.
Petruchio Why, there's a wench! Come on, and kiss me, Kate.
Dan took Lizzy in his arms, and the passion was evident. Dan and Lizzy were comfortable with each other - it was just a role to play. Darcy watched as Lizzy kissed Dan. Ms. Bennet certainly had passion William had not seen before. He realized that Lizzy was not only talented, but appealing to him. How can I be so taken with her, I have known many women, yet she is what I desire. Darcy was uneasy, women did not normally stir such strong emotion in him. He wanted to see more of her. He was anxious to go to the 8.0 now, perhaps she would go.
Lizzy savored the moment. She was exhausted and felt a sudden exhilaration at the same time. Curtain calls began. Lizzy and Dan were last. Dan took Lizzy's hand. They were center stage. He winked at her, he kissed her hand and then he bowed and she curtseyed. They fell into the line and did three company bows. In the corner of her eye, she saw someone moving. Please don't let it be Bill Collins. All of a sudden, William Darcy walked on stage and handed her a bouquet of red roses. Their eyes met. He was grinning from ear to ear. She mouthed, “thank you.” Before he knew what happened, he kissed her on her cheek. William was surprised by himself, she had affected his public behavior. Lizzy blushed, but was pleased that with the make-up he couldn't tell.
She looked as if she was going to cry. She felt so much emotion - her family, friends, and even Mr. Darcy enjoyed the play. Lizzy looked over at Jane and Charlotte. They represented so much to her this night. Lizzy realized what had made her feel so vulnerable - she realized all her hard work had paid off. For years, she took the roles she could get. There were times she was passed over for others, but her dad kept telling her that she would have her day in the spotlight. Her high school drama teacher had told her to give up. She lost out on Rose in Gypsy. She was determined not to concentrate on leads after that. Directors had told her she was good, but it had taken years for her confidence to return. So many people had doubted her, but her family, friends and cast mates knew her talent. This very floor she stood on, she had painted while in College just to help out. Lizzy was amazed at how far she had come. When she was passed over, she doubted she would ever be cast in a lead again. The right roles came when she least expected it. Her senior year, she was cast in a lead role and she refused it, but the director begged her. Lizzy was convinced that leading roles were not her forte.
Her dad sat her down and scolded her. “This role is yours, Lizzy. You have the talent, now do the job. Put forth your best effort and you will be rewarded.”
He had been so right. All those nights of doubting herself and painting scenery had led to this moment. Lizzy never thought she would be here at Theatre D in a starring role. She basked in the limelight. It felt so good, and the next play, the lead would be someone else. This was Dan's and Lizzy's and the rest of the cast's special night. She was thrilled that Jane and Charlotte were there to share it.
The Hursts excused themselves from Charles, Caroline and William. Louisa insisted that Mr. Hurst tired easily. He had slept through part of the play. Caroline was fine as long as William was in tow. Charles wanted to go to 8.0 - that cute girl was meeting him and he wasn't going to miss her.
Jane and Charlotte told Lizzy, one cup of coffee and she could go home. She removed her make-up, pulled on her jeans and sleeveless peach turtleneck. "Okay, let's go."
The 8.0 was a nightclub in Dallas frequented by artist types and actors. It was directly around the corner from Theatre D. It had a bar for drinking, and tables for those interested in an after theatre drink and dessert. It served great drinks, perfect coffee and wonderful cheesecake. But the best part of the 8.0 was the dance floor.
They arrived at 8.0. There was a waiting list.
Lizzy, beginning to feel the effects of performance, said, "I'd better go home."
"No Lizzy, let's have some fun. Just wait a minute for a table to open up," Jane pleaded.
Charlotte eyed Bill, and away she went. Charlotte was riding with Bill and there was no way they would see her again. She was very comfortable with Bill. Lizzy and Jane were used to being left by Charlotte with Bill around.
Jane laughed, "What does she see in him?"
Lizzy smiled. "I will never know, Jane." As she spoke, she backed into a man's body, hard and tall. She turned. "Mr. Darcy - I am sorry."
He smiled, making him look devastatingly attractive, "Ms. Bennet. I am sorry. I am sure I bumped into you. Where are you sitting?" Will asked. She is here, he thought, I am worse that a school boy with a crush, he so wanted to talk to her.
"Well, we aren't yet. My sister insists on waiting. I am tired, I would like to go home." Lizzy was shocked at William's manners. Obviously he could be charming when he chose. Is this the same Mr. Darcy? He is so different than I remember.
"Well, Ms. Bennet, we reserved a table. Come and sit with us, please. This way." William didn't wait for an answer. Jane nudged Lizzy forward, and she followed William. Why is Jane so keen on being here? William introduced Lizzy. "Charles and Caroline Bingley, this is Elizabeth Bennet, and this is her sister..."
Charles interjected, "Jane Bennet, I believe." Jane eyes lit up. There was the guy she wanted to find.
William continued, unaware of Charles and Jane's lusting. "Ms. Bennet is Kate, you know. I thought your portrayal of Kathryn was a surprise. I did not know you acted."
Caroline sneered at Jane and Lizzy, Charles only saw Jane. William was trying to gain Lizzy's attention.
Lizzy blushed, "Mr. Darcy, thank you. I just read great lines and hope the passion for Petruchio shows through." Lizzy was beaming. She had not expected a compliment from Mr. Darcy. Jane watched Lizzy, she was actually smiling and relaxed.
Charles jumped up and asked Jane to dance. Jane and Charles set off, and it was clear to all they would not be back for several dances. Caroline was intrigued. How on earth would Darcy know this Bennet girl? Elizabeth could not and would not reveal their meeting. William wasn't interested in airing dirty laundry.
"William, where did you and Ms. Bennet meet?" Caroline asked.
William grinned. " I am sorry, Caroline. I can't hear you, the music is so loud."
Lizzy covered her mouth. This was going to be fun. Caroline shrieked louder. "I said, how did you two meet?"
William glanced at Lizzy. She was an actress - she would play his game now. "I am sorry, Caroline. I really can't understand you, this music is very loud." William motioned his finger to ceiling.
This time, Caroline was determined William would hear her. She would not be undone by a cheap actress in jeans. "William, I said, how do you know Elizabeth Bennet?" People were staring - Caroline had bellowed like a cow. Everyone heard her except Elizabeth and William.
William shook his head at her and lifted his hands, like he was clueless. He motioned to Lizzy to dance. They headed off, laughing as they went. Darcy thought with triumph that he had timed it right, Unforgettable by Nat King Cole played. He held her hand as they weaved through the crowd. William felt like Lizzy and him were alone finally. He wanted to talk, but he knew he would hold her close.
Caroline started looking like a cat in heat. There had to be a man to dance with. She wanted to watch this Elizabeth Bennet. William was so helpless around women who just after his fortune. She wanted to make sure William and his fortune were safe for her. Men were avoiding looking at Caroline since her bellowing outburst, so she drank. The Long Island Iced Tea was tasty, so she drank a few more. By that time she was looking for Rolex watches in the bar. Isn't there a rich guy here somewhere?.
William took Lizzy and pulled her close to him in his arms and stated, "That was fun, Ms. Bennet. I never expected to have fun tonight. I must be honest I normally don't look forward to social occasions."
Lizzy put her arms around William. He glanced down at her and smiled. He had never expected to enjoy tonight. Elizabeth was a welcome diversion.
"Mr. Darcy, since we are partners in crime and dancing together, I think you should call me by my first name. I am Elizabeth, or Lizzy, if you like." Lizzy smiled. She enjoyed teasing someone. Jane had informed her of William Darcy being the biggest contributing patron at the play that night.
"Well, if you are Lizzy, I must be William. Partners are always on a first name basis." William smiled and pulled her closer still. He breathed in her perfume. They swayed to the music he felt her hips move to the music. She was soft and warm. She was graceful, he wanted to tell her so much and couldn't find the words. He had no idea what was happening to him and responded unconsciously. She was so radiant, her heavy stage make-up was gone and she was stunning still. He wanted to dance there for a while. Caroline was back at the table, not an inviting image.
"William, do you like dancing?" she asked. She looked up at him, he was melting in her arms.
William looked at her. He definitely did like dancing with her. He answered, "Lizzy, yes I like dancing. Tonight, it has been fun."
Lizzy rested her head on William's chest. He was lovely, she thought in surprise, so tall and strong. He was relaxed and felt gentler somehow. She seemed to run into him so often. First Jane has him bring me flowers on stage. And now this? How did I get here? I am dancing with a client's family member. Lizzy felt different about William. The feeling of his hands around her made her aware for the first time he was definitely all male. He seemed tender.
The song was ending, and she needed to go. William had no intention of going back to Caroline or letting Lizzy leave. He wanted more time with her, and she needed to know he was interested.
"William, I am exhausted. I need to go home. Thanks for dancing with me, I just want to relax and get off my feet." Lizzy watched him. He seemed quiet.
"Lizzy, I understand your need to go. Let's find Charles and Jane. I am going home, too." Yes, William thought, we will walk out together and I will be saved from Caroline's inquisition. William and Lizzy grabbed Charles and Jane, and they motioned to go outside. Charles, like a good brother, went and got Caroline. She was more than tipsy.
"Charles, William couldn't hear me. Where is he and that Bennet tramp?" Caroline slurred.
"Shh, Caroline I will take you to the car, William is outside somewhere." Charles pulled Caroline outside and unlocked her door. She was tired she settled in the seat and passed out. Charles saw Jane, took her hand and headed off to the fountain. He wanted to know more about her, and he still hadn't gotten her number. He was loved pretty girls and he was, after all, a man with drive.
William and Lizzy watched Charles and Jane scurry off, "Great, I am tired and she is off playing. Sorry William, I didn't mean to be rude. Jane is a great sister, but it has been a long day for me."
"Lizzy can I drive you home?" William asked.
"No, I brought my car, and it would be best for me to drive myself." Lizzy said. William looked over at Charles's car.
"Lizzy, I wish I could drive you home," William was fiddling with his keys. Lizzy is gorgeous. That would give me more time with her.
"William, I drove here at 5:00 p.m. I drive myself everywhere. I am perfectly capable of driving my sister and myself home. I only drank water." Lizzy thought he was being too protective and what right had he to be that?
William looked into her eyes. Yes, she is stubborn. "Lizzy, I thought you needed some help, that is all. Dallas does have a crime rate and it is late. Would you mind calling me when you get home, just so I know you are okay?”
Lizzy stared back. Now that is the guy I saw in my office. "Really William, that is not necessary, we will be fine."
William was worried. Apparently, he was not clear enough. "Surely, you realize women are preyed on by criminals, Lizzy."
That was it. Lizzy was tired, and this conversation was not helping. I don't need a bodyguard, wow this guy is so old-fashioned "Will, criminals prey on victims. I do not consider myself a victim. I drive here five nights a week without calling you. It is not my nature to report my whereabouts to anyone."
Will said, "You should be careful. I would hope you would want someone to check on you."
Lizzy was fighting mad now. "I need to go. Jane will be fine. Thanks for the table. Jane," she yelled. "Jane, Jane, come on, I am tired." Lizzy tried once more.
Jane and Charles appeared around the corner hand in hand. William rolled his eyes. Charles was in love yet again. Lizzy turned to go to her car, William followed. He wasn't sure she wanted him to, but that would never stop William. She had met her match in stubbornness.
Lizzy called, "Jane, come on, I am beat."
Jane was lip-locked to Charles. "In a minute, Lizzy."
Lizzy sighed in fury, as she unlocked her door. William grabbed it to open it for her. "Good night, Lizzy."
"Good night, William," she said. Lizzy beeped her horn and Jane ran to the car. Lizzy was leaving whether Jane was coming or not. Lizzy never asked anything twice.
William watched her leave. He waved to Charles, and drove off.
Jane had a silly grin the whole ride home. Lizzy would ask about Charles, but not tonight. Jane always found perfect guys and Lizzy never noticed anyone interested in her like that. Lizzy dropped Jane and she floated up to her apartment.
Lizzy parked her car and went inside her apartment. She stripped to her bare body and climbed in bed. She had just got comfortable and cuddled up at home in her own bed when the phone rang. Great. Only crank calls and winos call at this hour. Lizzy said, "hello."
"Lizzy, I know you said you would be fine, but I wanted to make sure." William was sure Lizzy was glad he called.
"Who is this?" Lizzy asked.
"Lizzy, it's William, I called Charles and he was talking to Jane, so I got your number from her. Did I wake you?" William knew she sounded irritated.
Lizzy yawned. "William, really, I am fine. Just exhausted, and I have a matinee tomorrow."
William said, "I am sorry, but I am glad you are safe, Lizzy. Good night."
"Good night, William." Lizzy hung up the phone and fell into a deep sleep.
******************
Monday morning arrived. Lizzy was busy at work. Maria came in with a vase containing two-dozen red roses. Maria teased Lizzy that she had a sweetheart. Lizzy laughed, "Yeah, and her name is Jane." She pulled the card out and it said,
You are terrific.
Your secret admirer
Sure. Jane and Charlotte are really funny. She wanted to call Jane, but she had a client waiting. She would call her later. Later never came. Lizzy was rushed all day.
Chapter 5
Lizzy lived in a beautiful apartment in an area called Valley Ranch on the West side of Dallas. There was a man-made canal that ran through Valley Ranch, and her apartment balcony faced the water. Jane lived in the same apartment complex. It was a perfect arrangement - they could see each other when they wanted to, but both still had privacy. Jane was a social blossom. She had dates anytime she wanted one, while Lizzy kept her distance at dating. Lizzy had decorated her simple apartment in Art Deco style. She was a romantic, and she knew it. She loved nostalgia and old things. In her bathroom, she placed an Art Nouveau bronze tulip lamp that rested on her countertop. The mirror in the bathroom reflected the elegance of a private haven just for her. On her balcony were a cafe table and two chairs. Every morning that she was not at work she would make her coffee and go to her balcony. It was her favorite place. She would watch the mama and baby ducks and the water and relax. Yes, her life was a neat little package. She loved her job, her apartment and her acting. What else could she need?
She and Jane would occasionally go to a beautiful park on Turtle Creek. Turtle Creek Park was the most beautiful area that Lizzy and Jane knew about. There were many beautiful parks in Dallas, but this was Lizzy's favorite. On one side was a bike and walk trail with a grassy area for picnics and a place to relax. On the other side of the shore were the backyards of the richest houses in Dallas. In a way, it was a piece of heaven on the public side, a quiet pretty place to hang out and gossip, but the temptation was to speculate who lived on the other side.
It was time for Lizzy and Jane to go on a picnic at Turtle Creek Park. They found a perfect spot near a willow tree. They laid out a blanket and the cooler. They looked over at the perfectly manicured lawns and dreamed. There always had been one lawn that Lizzy could not keep her eyes off of. It had a beautiful marble gazebo with a statute in it. Lizzy couldn't explain in words why her eyes and heart fixated on it. The house and lawn were beyond beautiful. Lizzy knew the owner had come to this side of the shore and said, "Yes, right there is the perfect location for the gazebo.” Lizzy loved gazebos, but this one was the fondant on the cake. It made the lawn and the house. The house was cornered by two busy streets, but you could not see it from there. Privacy and tranquility must be very important to the owner. Lizzy never tired of looking at it. She hoped Jane would not notice her obsession with the house. She speculated that an elderly couple with European tastes lived there, but what if a younger person owned it? The owner had taste in spades.
Jane watched Lizzy as she gazed at the gazebo - every year Jane knew Lizzy was drawn to it. Jane enjoyed this side of Lizzy very few people saw. It was a window into Lizzy's soul.
Finally Lizzy said, "Jane, I wonder who lives in that house?"
Jane knew Lizzy couldn't take her eyes away even to face her. "Lizzy, what is it about that house that appeals to you so much?"
Lizzy grinned, "Well Jane, the yard, the gazebo, it is like no other house around. I can see that it is a perfect spot for family gatherings and backyard events, that's all.”
Jane knew Lizzy was vulnerable today in her dreams. "Lizzy, what else exactly would that gazebo be perfect for?"
Lizzy blushed and said, "Okay, I admit it, it is a perfect place for a wedding, but if you tell anyone, I will tell everyone you kissed Bill Collins."
Jane laughed, "Yeah, Lizzy I was thirteen. Big deal. You, on the other hand, come here every year and dream of that gazebo."
Lizzy looked over at the gazebo, and looked years away. "Jane, I can't help it. That marble draws me in like an Erte print. I know it's silly, but I can't help myself. I know I will never marry, so it's just a fantasy I have. Besides, how in the world would I ever meet the person that owns that house? I might as well hope to meet Ron Howard. It won't happen. So, it really is a harmless dream. Now, enough about my hopeless fantasy. Let's have some croissants, and open up the wine."
Jane smiled. She knew the subject was locked away till next spring. They would come here again, but Lizzy would not talk about that house. Jane doubted that Lizzy would stay single - she was so romantic that once the right guy came along, Lizzy would fall head over heels. Jane knew Lizzy kept busy to avoid finding Mr. Right, but love has a funny way of finding a closet romantic like Lizzy and it was only a matter of time.
******************
Greater Tuna is a famous two man play that has run in Texas and other areas for over twenty years. Greater Tuna played all over the state to sold out audiences. The two men are incredibly talented and use hundreds of voices. They play men and women. It is the play that reflects the eccentrics in Texas, the interesting and the unusual. At one time it played in New York City, but Texas is its home and it plays best to those who understand the characters. Greater Tuna started in Austin, but trueness of the characters makes it hilarious. It is the play everyone sees for a real laugh.
Greater Tuna was playing at the Majestic Theater in downtown Dallas. The Majestic is an ornately decorated theater that opened in 1921 with Vaudeville. There is not a more beautiful theater in Dallas. The elegance of the era is everywhere. It is decorated in a beautiful red and gold. There is gold leaf everywhere. It is the location stars like to play at, the acoustics are perfect and elegance is in every corner.
Lizzy called The Majestic to see if they needed ushers. They said yes. Lizzy was elated to volunteer at The Majestic and see Greater Tuna. The tickets were steep and Lizzy wanted to see the show. It is a Texas Legend. She picked Saturday, most people wanted to go out and liked other nights.
Every good actress has four semi-formal black dresses in case of ushering. Four dresses ensure that you have enough for a weekend run, Thursday, Friday, Saturday and a Sunday matinee. Lizzy had just bought a new black dress and could hardly wait till the night she ushered. It was a black velvet dress with a scoop neckline and cap sleeves. She put on her pearls her father gave her for her college graduation, and her diamond earrings he had given her for high school graduation. She put her Estee Lauder Red lipstick on, and pursed her lips. She watched in the mirror, her father treated her so well. If she were to ever marry she wanted someone like her dad, who knew exactly what she wanted. All her life she would put on her mom's pearl necklace and her earrings and her best lipstick and would do a quick smooch to the mirror. She did love being a girl, and diamonds and pearls were such fun. Her father doted on her and always told her she was beautiful, while her mom shrieked at her using her best lipstick.
Charles and Caroline bought their tickets months ago. Charles had called Jane to go after meeting her at Theatre D. Caroline had asked William before Georgiana was out of the hospital. Charles picked up Jane, Caroline and Will in his BMW. William was distracted - Jane was Lizzy's sister and he was with Caroline. He had said yes in a weak moment, but his word was his bond. So he went with Caroline and hoped for the best.
Charles had chosen a black tux, with Jane on his arm in an amethyst colored gown, she lit up on his arm. William was in his black tux and tried to make sure he wasn't too close to Caroline. Caroline had gone to great expense to find perfect gown, it was aqua with beads everywhere. She knew she looked great - her gown was expensive, and William was a fool not to notice. William had noticed and stayed at least three feet away, that way no one was sure if she had a date.
They arrived at The Majestic, even Caroline was in awe of its beauty. If a building is beautiful, a woman wants to see the bathroom and Caroline was curious. So she headed to the powder room as well as William and Charles.
Jane wanted to find Lizzy. Jane scanned the theatre lobby looking for Lizzy.
"Lizzy, Charles is wonderful, he is so sweet, so polite. Do you like him Lizzy? " Jane gushed.
"Of course, Jane. He seems nice and he favors my favorite sister. He certainly has good taste in you." Lizzy giggled, Jane seemed more taken with Charles with each passing day.
"Lizzy, he is so kind, he brought Caroline and William Darcy too. He is so thoughtful." Jane was beaming.
Lizzy thought, well of course William would come to Greater Tuna with Caroline. She wondered if he was still her partner in crime. Caroline on a date with William, how interesting.
"Jane, Charles Bingley seems to be a charming man, I hope you have fun tonight," Lizzy replied.
"Lizzy, can I talk to you during the intermission?" Jane asked.
"Jane I will be busy then, so spend your time with Charles. Jane, I need to get back to work, enjoy the show," Lizzy smiled as she started to open up her doors.
Jane rounded the theater and found Charles with Caroline in tow. William was missing but he had his ticket. William was never late to anything, Caroline was sure he would be at her side any moment.
William had heard of Greater Tuna but had never seen it. He was browsing at the promotional table. He was killing time. Caroline wasn't that bad, he thought. He did not enjoy crowds and the lobby was quiet. He realized he had better find his seat, so he went to an usher, and as she smiled he realized it was Lizzy. Great. Lizzy looks fabulous, and I am with Caroline. .
"Lizzy, I didn't know you worked here too," he said. She was stunning in black. He suddenly regretted saying yes to Caroline - he wanted to spend time with Lizzy. He was drawn to her.
"Will, I don't work here, I volunteer. I get to see the show for free and it helps the theater." Lizzy watched William. He seemed different.
"Lizzy, it was a pleasure dancing with you at the 8.0, do you go there often?" William had hoped he could find out something personal about her.
"No William, I only go when Jane and Charlotte drag me. I stay pretty busy with my job and acting." Lizzy looked around - she was supposed to be working.
"Lizzy, you look wonderful tonight." William thought maybe Lizzy would talk to him about it. His eyes couldn't stop staring at her. Every time she appeared in front of him, she was more beautiful than the time before. He needed time with her.
"William, thank you." Lizzy answered.
William stood there, he was handsome but was unsure what to do. Women had never been a problem before, he rarely cared what anyone thought. William wanted Lizzy, yet Caroline seemed to lurk everywhere. William felt he needed to be honest with Lizzy. He didn't know why he had a compulsion to explain himself. Caroline could come up any moment and it would ruin it for him. "Lizzy, I have to tell you something," he started.
"Yes, William?" Lizzy thought she knew what he was going to say.
"Lizzy, I am with Caroline tonight and since Jane is with Charles, I wanted to explain." William was uncomfortable with this - he desired Lizzy but he would not leave Caroline dateless. How did I get here, why do I care so much what she thinks?
Lizzy smiled. "Listen, William we were partners in crime, and it was amusing. I know Caroline is your date. Jane told me already. I am here for the play and I hope you enjoy your evening." What on earth is he thinking? Well I will have a great night, and enjoy myself.
"Lizzy, we are partners in crime still, it was my pleasure. Have you seen Greater Tuna before?" William said. He knew she would talk about the play.
"Yes, I have seen it several times, but each time I see it I realize how much I miss. I am sorry - I really am busy tonight. I told the theatre I would help out. Let me see your ticket." Lizzy took William's ticket.
"By the way, your ticket says you are on the other side. Enjoy the show." Lizzy watched as he walked away in his black tux. William Darcy definitely had a good tailor.
Lizzy shut the doors, and watched the show. She laughed so hard - the actors of a thousand voices were amazing. Lizzy was glad she had come. She looked good, and it was a nice evening. She had decided tonight was going to be enjoyed.
William would occasionally look back to watch her laugh. She laughed with her whole body. Why did he have to be here with Caroline? She did little else than smile slightly… Jane was convinced she feared her make-up would crack. William enjoyed the show and found it full of interesting characters. He was eager to talk to Lizzy during intermission. He attempted to watch her and the show at the same time.
"William, watch the show," Caroline said as she noticed William turning his head again.
"Sorry, Caroline," he whispered. Great Caroline noticed, I must not stare at Lizzy.
On cue, Lizzy opened up her doors for intermission. She headed for back stage.
William made a beeline to the lobby, but Lizzy was nowhere in sight. He wanted to ask Jane where she was, but he was Caroline's date and he knew better.
"William, look at these tacky T-shirts," Caroline said as she batted her spider lashes.
"Yes, Caroline, they are a way for you to support Greater Tuna." William was becoming tired of her insults. William decided to watch for Lizzy - Caroline would irritate him less that way.
Lizzy came in the back stage entrance. Suddenly she caught the sight of an old familiar face. George Wickham was a stagehand for Greater Tuna. She hadn't seen him in years, but memories flooded back to her like a bad dream. She had to be strong - he would not affect her tonight if she could help herself. Lizzy needed to focus on Greater Tuna, not Wickham. He will be gone soon and good riddance. This would be Lizzy's best performance thus far, he would not rattle her tonight.
She smiled at him. She thought he would remember her. They had a history. George used to stagehand at The Bath House at White Rock Lake. Lizzy had done one play there. He had acted like Lizzy was his only interest. Lizzy was fooled during the rehearsals that George had wanted a relationship with her. George said all the right things, but he seemed too good to be true, and he was. Lizzy was moved by him at rehearsals, so she was elated that opening night they were going out, just the two of them. The cast and crew usually went out as a group, and George charmed Lizzy. She was finally ready to trust George. Then the morning of opening night Lizzy had found out at a final wardrobe fitting that George Wickham was a womanizer and had boasted to the crew he was going to sleep with an actress this weekend. Lizzy realized it was her George was referring to. She had always been unsure of her beauty. Her father told her on a regular basis she was beautiful, but Lizzy knew he was biased. Jane was the beautiful one. That day changed Lizzy. She didn't openly trust men much. Lizzy couldn't shake the feeling of insecurity she had felt because of Wickham - she didn't trust her judgment of men after him. He had fooled her so easily, so after George she found it difficult to trust men. She dated, but never with any real interest on her part. George had taken something from her. She wanted nothing to do with men like George. Any hint of a womanizer, and Lizzy would not consider them at all.
Wickham treated women like paper plates. He used them and threw them away. He didn't consider a woman as a relationship unless he was aware of an estate. He romanced the rich ones for hopes of financial gain, and he seduced the others because he could. He had a reputation in the theater set that he was after one thing. After Wickham was finished with a woman, he never recalled her name or number. He was a true womanizer - women meant two things to him: money and sex. That was all Wickham cared about, anyway. He was shallow and yet very seductive, he told women what they wanted to hear. He didn't mind lying to get what he wanted.
Wickham watched Lizzy. He reasoned she must be new, as she appeared to know to some of the roadies. She asked if anyone needed anything and the crew responded nicely. They were fine, but appreciative she had asked. Lizzy had to keep moving. George was watching her and she knew it.
Lizzy went back to the lobby. She wanted to appear fine, but Lizzy knew she had been nothing to George. William saw her come around the corner. Her sparkle was dimmed - she seemed upset. He tried to move towards her, but Caroline grabbed his arm. "William, we must be seated. Come, darling." Lizzy flicked the lights.
William was seated and watched Lizzy get into position by her door. William could see Lizzy had changed, she hardly laughed. He wanted to talk with her. He needed to know what had bothered her. Why do I feel the need to protect Lizzy? The show was fast paced. William was entranced by the characters by then. Towards the end of the show, William glanced back and saw George Wickham talking to her. Where had that devil come from?
"So, you want to go out with tonight me?" George asked as he leaned his arm against the wall. He knew this girl was his to take, the other roadies had told him to leave her alone, but he was sure she wanted him to ask her out.
"You know, I made plans tonight, sorry." Lizzy hoped Wickham would listen and leave quickly.
"Come on, I am here for two more nights and I am so lonely. You know you want to." Wickham smiled his grin that made her stomach turn.
Lizzy cringed inside, but remained calm. "I would like to watch the show. No, I said. I have plans. Just get through this, Lizzy. George Wickham hasn't changed. He wants power over me and he can't have it.
"Here I really thought you liked to have fun, I guess not." George loved to insinuate he was the most fun a girl could have.
"Yeah, I am going to have fun, don't worry about me." Lizzy smiled at George. Lizzy was sure he didn't remember her. Lizzy thought about George, he was easy to read now. She had matured and he hadn't.
"Okay if you are sure you don't want to change your plans. Maybe next time I come to town we can go out then." Wickham said as he leaned and kissed Lizzy on the cheek.
Lizzy wanted to pull away from him, but she knew he enjoyed challenges and she had to act like they were on friendly terms. Lizzy could do this if it meant he left her alone. Lizzy's only desire was to get through this night and close the door on their past. George Wickham was so clear now, he would leave and she wouldn't see him for years.
The curtain calls began. George Wickham and Lizzy were still talking. Then George gave Lizzy a peck on the cheek, and William turned away in anger. How could she let that creep touch her? Lizzy acted like she didn't care, he wouldn't have control over her self worth - not here. Control was needed and she did what she did best, acted her heart out. George Wickham was headed to the next town on the tour. Lizzy was glad he had gotten a road job. I am glad, that means he no longer lives here.
Lizzy opened her door. William got up and told Charles he was ready to go home. William could not watch Lizzy and Wickham together - it was too painful for him. Wickham had already ruined Georgiana's life, he couldn't look at Wickham without disgust. He was captivated by Lizzy, but he was torn. He desperately longed for a quick exit.
Lizzy looked lost in her own thoughts. She was totally unaware of William even noticing Wickham. Lizzy knew she had to contain herself a little longer. She had to act happy for Jane. She wanted Jane to feel special tonight - Charles was a great boyfriend.
Jane told Charles she was ready to go after saying goodbye to Lizzy.
"Why doesn't Lizzy go out with us, Jane?" Charles asked.
"She has already made other plans, Charles," Jane answered.
"William, let's go now," Caroline said as she grabbed his arm. She had no desire to share William Darcy with that tramp.
William pursed his lips. He was sure Lizzy's plans included George Wickham. The foursome left and Lizzy went home.
As Lizzy drove home she pondered what George had done to her. She was so different after meeting him. Wickham was a low life, no doubt. He didn't remember her - that was clear. He had no idea she was disgusted by him. Tonight made her discover something about herself. Tonight she looked great and she had wanted a date. For the first time in a very long time she wanted to be on the arm of someone. She realized even Caroline had a date tonight.
In the past Wickham was the only kind of guy Lizzy attracted. Lizzy wanted more tonight - she wanted to dress up for someone. She wanted to know there was a man out there that wanted her. Lizzy had been through so much emotion. She had held back her feelings long enough. Jane was on a happy date with Charles and she could finally do what she wanted to since she saw Wickham. She put her head in her pillow and cried. The walls of protection that she had used to keep others away had all vanished. She was sick of feeling less than beautiful. She had finally gotten fed up and wanted to move on. She was tired of being alone. Lizzy rarely cried and never in public, it felt good. Control was no longer needed - she needed love and respect. It was time to let the pain go for good. She knew she wanted to date, but she was so confused on how. Jane always dated such nice guys. Lizzy dreamed of having a boyfriend for the first time in a long time. She had not allowed herself to consider herself attractive to men. She dressed attractive for work and auditions, but that was for specific purposes. Now she wanted to be beautiful for a special man. Lizzy was clueless about who would be attracted to her, but now she ached to be loved by someone special.
At home in bed, William tossed and turned. He was so attracted to Lizzy and he didn't want to be, especially if she was involved with Wickham. I must get her out of my head, Wickham has touched her now. Sleep did not come easily to William - he was too upset. He knew he ached for Lizzy, but he had little choice in the matter. When he closed his eyes, her graceful vision appeared. No matter what William tried, he still saw her laughing in her beautiful black dress. He knew he would never accept an invitation from Caroline again. There was only one woman he wanted. Yet she had let Wickham kiss her cheek. William wanted to pull Lizzy away from Wickham, but he knew George was charming. He had hoped Lizzy would not want to be near Wickham if she knew about him. He wondered if Georgiana's medical record mention George's name. No, probably not, he thought. He closed his eyes again, and her vision reappeared. He had never dreamed of a woman before. William was scared of his feelings for Lizzy. He wanted to rest and not think, but he couldn't. A part of William wanted to call Lizzy to hear her voice, but it was too risky for him. He could not let Lizzy know how he felt. He finally gave in to his vision, closed his eyes and focused on her graceful form. Sleep then came to William.
********************
The next Monday morning, two dozen red roses arrived at work for Lizzy. The card said Still Enchanted, Your Secret Admirer. Lizzy perked up. At least someone was enchanted with her, but she still thought it was Jane, that sappy girl.
Chapter 6
Jane called Lizzy, "Lizzy, I have to go to this flag football game. I won't know anyone except Charles, and he will be on the field. Please Lizzy, come with me."
Lizzy wrinkled her nose. She said, "Jane, this is my day off. Oh, alright, I really won't enjoy it, but for you, anything."
Lizzy hung up the phone and tried to get as much done as she could before she left. She cranked up the Beach Boys and started vacuuming.
Lizzy had no idea what to wear. Southern Methodist University was a snob school. She finally decided to put on a pair of jean shorts and the ever-popular crisp white shirt. She went to pick up Jane, who wore a summer casual dress. Lizzy knew Jane would look better - she had a sense of confidence when she dressed that Lizzy never truly accomplished. Jane looked beautiful and Lizzy looked sweet. Lizzy decided not to change. This was not her circle of friends and she felt comfortable and cool. There was little chance Lizzy would ever see these people again.
Jane and Lizzy arrived at the field. Charles ran up and said, "Jane, I am so glad you are here.” Lizzy looked away and saw a tall handsome figure she recognized.
Darcy strolled up, grinning. "Lizzy, I am glad to see you." His eyes seemed to glisten in the sunlight. Lizzy thought William appeared more relaxed.
Lizzy said, "William, Jane invited me. I had no idea you were here, too. So, William Darcy, are you going to tell me about this game?"
William smiled again. "Oh, it is an annual tradition at Southern Methodist University. The current MBAers play a light contact football game against the MBA alumni. We are older and slower and usually get beat, but this is a charity fundraiser. We do this so the charity makes money and the alumnis get to know the current students."
Lizzy knew football - she and her father mutually enjoyed the game. Jane had been a cheerleader in high school - she was clearly in her element. Lizzy had never been to SMU for anything. It was exclusive. Lizzy was too involved in her own world to know about SMU happenings. Lizzy looked around and saw adoring women talking to their husbands or boyfriends. It was a beautiful sunny day, everyone had pom-poms and SMU colored shirts. This is a big event, Lizzy guessed, although she knew nothing about it. There were photographers and presentations.
"Well William, I guess I need to wish you good luck. Sorry, I am used to saying break a leg or enjoy the show. So William, get out there and knock someone down would you?" Lizzy said.
William and Charles ran towards the middle of the field. They had their team pictures taken and then several had group photos. Charles and William stood for a picture together. Everyone, it seemed, knew this was a big deal. Lizzy realized Jane knew William would be there. Jane was absolutely giddy at watching Charles.
Lizzy felt changed by all the surroundings - she had not thought she would get caught up in this. From where Lizzy could see, the field was filled with handsome gods and the stands filled with goddesses. On the field, William looked like an Adonis. He had classic features that enraptured her. William wore football shorts that fitted snug and the alumni had the blue shirts. It was clear to Lizzy that William went to the gym on a regular basis. She acknowledged he was the most handsome on the field he was tanned and athletic. She tried to look away from him, but could not take her eyes away.
One thing in common all guys have that play football at any age in Texas is they enjoy the whole atmosphere of it. So it was now! The SMU cheerleaders were there, but each player knew his girl was in the stands acting like a teenager. The ladies watched the guys, and the guys did their best not to disappoint the ladies. This was the perfect day for football in Texas, it was not too hot and everyone was happy and laughing. In so many ways this was what people understood Texas was about. Football and cheerleaders are institutions. Some choose to ignore football and concentrate elsewhere, others embrace it. Jane loved it and Lizzy understood it, but even she got caught up in the game.
Charles was the quarterback - he threw the ball with speed and flair. William was much taller, so he became an offensive lineman to defend Charles. Charles had all the time in the world to throw the ball and William was running his heart out. It was clear to Lizzy how loyal William was to Charles. He protected him at all costs to himself. After every play Charles would look up in the stands and wave to Jane. Lizzy was impressed with William -he took down a player with every play. He moved fast, and in between he seemed to laugh and talk with the players. It was a side of William, a warm physical side, Lizzy had never seen. Before she knew it, Lizzy was cheering on Charles and William to complete each pass and score. William would glance up after hearing her voice and smile. Lizzy was more into the game than she would admit. It was a great spring day for football.
When the defense finally took over, Charles and William went to drink water and stand on the sidelines, Jane insisted that she and Lizzy go down to talk to Charles and William.
"Jane, I am so glad you are here." Charles said. Charles leaned over the railing and hugged her.
"Charles, this is really fun, you play so well - I had no idea," Jane gushed. Charles was dressed tight football shorts, his hair seemed to float as he ran. Jane was falling hard for Charles - he was everything she had ever wanted in a boyfriend and more.
"Well, I play better because I know you are here," Charles said as he grabbed Jane's hand and squeezed it. Jane had a face he couldn't keep his eyes off of. She was the best thing to happen to him, and he knew it.
William and Lizzy watched Jane and Charles. They were so smitten and it was mutual. William wanted to have that kind of relationship Charles found so easy to establish. Lizzy knew Jane was so much better with guys, yet she still didn't understand how Jane was so relaxed around Charles.
William wiped his face with a towel and asked, "Lizzy, after the game will you go for a cup of coffee with me?"
"Well, I don't know William," Lizzy answered. I will not tell him what I need to, not now, maybe this will be the last time I see William Darcy.
"I promise, I have had my shots and I am harmless Lizzy," William quipped.
"Okay, William. Are you going to ask me to call you when I get home?" Lizzy knew he would respond.
"Lizzy, just a cup of coffee," William grinned at her.
Once again, Charles and William went on the field. Charles threw the ball faster and harder each time. William played like a twenty year old. They enjoyed showing off in front of Jane and Lizzy. They would never admit it, but they strutted the field and laughed and joked.
Half time arrived and William motioned for Lizzy and Jane to come and speak to them. William had a towel around his neck. "Not sure I won't need an IV after this game today," he quipped.
Lizzy laughed. "Well, if you are too tired...."
William interjected, "No, I am not dehydrated yet and you're not bailing out on me. I got to see what you do away from work, and now you get to see what I like to do."
"So, William, you enjoy this. I wouldn't have guessed." Lizzy tried not to smile.
"Okay, I admit it, I do enjoy this. Lizzy I will be honest - look around. Most guys have brought someone to cheer for them. Every guy here wants to hear his name." William looked down at the ground, he took off his towel and started to put it up.
Lizzy grabbed the towel and popped William with it. "Okay, William. Go get back out there." William looked back in surprise and winked at her. Lizzy was not intimidated by him - he had never been around a woman like her.
"Yes Ma'am, will do.” He was beaming and felt like he owned the field.
Charles and William went onto the field and got into their positions. Charles threw a touchdown pass and William knocked down two players. Lizzy jumped up and yelled "Way to go, William!" He looked up at her flushed face and waved. Cool, Lizzy. What are you, a high school cheerleader? Reality check. This guy seems interested, but you are not in his league. This is SMU, not UTD Lizzy had hoped no one noticed her yelling, but Jane was laughing, so she knew many did.
Lizzy was surprised at the physical level William played - he definitely wanted to win. He was a competitor, and she saw he did not like to lose. The game was over and the current MBAers won, but the alumni held their own and the final score was 21-14.
Jane and Lizzy were ready to go. Jane had told Lizzy Charles was taking her to his house and a private lunch. Will came over to Lizzy and said, "I know I said coffee, but it is 11:30 and by the time we get there it will be 12:00. How about lunch?"
Lizzy said, "Sure. Just don't take me some place fancy, William."
William looked down at himself. "Okay, Chili's it is."
William insisted that the parking at Chili's was too crowded and Lizzy needed to leave her car. She actually did agree the parking was awful, so she gave in. William opened his Jaguar door, and Lizzy stepped inside. The car reeked of money - it still had the new car smell Lizzy's car had lost several years before. The smell of the leather seats mixed with William's dark, woodsy smell. Lizzy's nose was in heaven.
William carefully drove over to Greenville Avenue, and neither spoke a word. They arrived and sat down. William looked at Lizzy and smiled. "You know, their Margaritas are very good. If you want to order one, go ahead. I don't think I can stomach alcohol right now, I need some iced tea."
"William, I have much to do today. Still, a Margarita sounds great, but I will be useless later. I'd better stick to iced tea too." Lizzy watched him. Did he expect me to drink at this hour?
"Lizzy, you like the Awesome Blossom? Will you help me eat it?" William asked.
"William, yes of course, I might fight you for it. This Chili's is the one we went to since it opened, the food is always great here. Chili's has changed so much, but here is like an old friend." Lizzy smiled. Her father loved to bring them to Chili's and relax in their excitement of being together.
"Lizzy, funny how you remember Chili's, I do too. They are very happy memories. This was the place we came to as a family to relax. What are you going to have today?" William looked over the menu. Lizzy was struck by his friendliness and his ease in a place like Chili's.
"Well William, I think I am going to have the Chicken Fajita Salad, how about you?" Lizzy couldn't imagine what William would order.
"You know, there is some really great stuff here, but my favorite is the Oldtimer Burger. It is an original, and I want to stick to tradition today," William answered.
Jeff the waiter came up and took their order - as he walked away, Lizzy watched and noticed William was quiet.
"Let's recap - football, cheerleaders, the Original Chili's, the Oldtimer burger and iced tea. William, you are such a typical Texan, who would have guessed that?" Lizzy said as she smiled at him.
"I am a Texan, Lizzy. I love football as much as the next guy. This surprises you?" William asked.
"William Darcy, the last place I thought I would ever see you is playing football. When we met you seemed so serious," Lizzy said.
"I am serious, Lizzy, from 8-5 Monday through Friday. Today is Saturday and I plan to enjoy it." William looked at Lizzy. He had never thought he would feel happy about today - social functions had never been fun before.
"So William, this game today was it an event you planned for months?" Lizzy asked.
William smiled at Lizzy. "Lizzy this is a big deal for the MBAers. It takes months of planning. Thanks, Lizzy, for coming the game. I really enjoyed the game, I just look forward to it each year."
Lizzy responded, "I really had fun, I had no plans for going but thought it was a great game."
William thought about Lizzy and his day. He wanted to tell her how much it meant to him to see her there. She had been in his world, if only for a few hours. The thought of having her nearby was intoxicating.
"Jane seemed to enjoy the game too, I know Charles was glad she came." William said as he unfolded his napkin.
"Yes that is Jane's territory, she loves cheering people on. I noticed a lot of women enjoyed it as much as the guys on the field. Many of the MBAers seemed married, I think." Lizzy looked at her iced tea glass, she regretted bringing up marriage. What a stupid topic, he isn't worried about that - he is William Darcy.
"Lizzy, I always forget there are couples everywhere, too." William looked down at his napkin.
"Yes, I realize what it is like to see couplevision everywhere. I have felt like that before, even at Greater Tuna," Lizzy observed to William.
He had listened attentively. He had seen her with George Wickham - she wasn't alone. He decided to dive in, he had to know. "I thought I saw you talking to a person I know, George Wickham. I thought you two were going out that night."
Lizzy stared at William, she wanted to tell him so little. "George Wickham and I knew each other years ago, but I never dated him. I have no interest in dating George Wickham."
William was relieved, but he sensed there was more to Lizzy's story. "You know, his father worked for us."
"No, I didn't know that. He was a mystery last time I saw him and still is. At Greater Tuna, he didn't know me." Lizzy breathed. George was gone - she was free.
William suddenly angered. "You should be glad you don't know him well. You might not be able to stand the sight of him."
Lizzy was shocked at William's anger. "George Wickham is just a pathetic person, William. I wasted a lot of time on trying to understand him. I decided I needed to grow past all of that." Lizzy couldn't figure out what Wickham did to William, she thought he was only trouble for women.
William was still angry. "I will not forgive George Wickham for what I know of him."
Lizzy studied William. "That's sad, William. This is hurting you, not him. He has no conscience."
William shot back, "I choose not to forgive."
Lizzy said, "I hope I'm never on your blacklist."
William reflected on Lizzy. There was so much he wanted to share with her. "You could never do to me what Wickham has done, Lizzy." William cherished Lizzy, she didn't realize what she meant to him.
"Well I have seen your temper first hand, William," Lizzy smiled at him. Had he recognized his rudeness that day? William listened, he didn't want to discuss himself on that day. His only interest was Lizzy.
"Lizzy, I have a question for who about that day. On the elevator you were a hundred miles away. Where were you?" William asked.
Lizzy laughed, "Oh William, you think I am a deep thinker, how sweet. I am a shallow pool. I was mentally rehearsing Kate's monologue for my audition. Then I was singing Pippin in my head."
William was amazed at Lizzy. "Why didn't you tell me?"
Lizzy studied William's face, "You didn't seem approachable that day, William. I thought you wanted to be left alone." Why won't he tell what he was upset about that day?
William gazed deeply at Lizzy. "Next time we are stuck in an elevator, I promise I do not want to be left alone." He couldn't believe he said it, but it was out and he waited for her response.
Lizzy smiled as she lifted her tea glass, "I'll have to remember that William. Next time I will tell you exactly what I am thinking." She was astounded how one moment he was angry with Wickham and the next almost flirting with her.
William was definitely flirting with her, although it was not his nature. In college, girls flocked to him, since then he had been too busy to even try dating. The more he tried to be calm around her the more his heart raced. The food was gone and the iced tea glasses were empty. The booths around them had changed people two times, he realized it was time to go and yet he still wanted more time with her.
Lizzy looked at William. He was preoccupied in his own argument in his head. "William, I really need to get home. It's a catch up day for me. I'm not doing a show, so I need to do all those things I got behind on."
William frowned. He had to let her go again. "Lizzy, I know. I'm just glad you came with me to eat. I hate to eat alone."
Lizzy replied, "William I understand that, I'm glad I came. Thanks for the lunch."
They walked outside, he opened her door to the Jaguar. It was something she was so unaccustomed to. He drove her back to SMU. He parked the car and ran around to open her door.
"William, really, that is not necessary," Lizzy said as she stepped outside the car.
"Lizzy, my mother taught me to open doors and say yes ma'am. I don't mean to insult anyone, but women are to be treated with respect." William hoped he hadn't offended her.
"William glad to know you listened well. I like being treated with respect." Lizzy couldn't comprehend him - he was so self absorbed when she met him. Now he had perfect manners. William was a mystery to her.
William contemplated. He had left so much unsaid. She was not ready, he sensed it. He wanted to ask her out, and he didn't know himself why he couldn't.
"William, are you going to call to see if I am safe? I asked you not to, you know," Lizzy said.
"Lizzy, you know I am going to call. I know you asked me not to, but I will kick myself if you had an accident on the way home. The real question is, are you going to answer the phone?" William had been too honest.
"You'll just have to call and see if I do, William Darcy," Lizzy quipped as she got in her car.
As Lizzy drove home she thought about William Darcy on the football field and at Chili's, he seemed so relaxed. She knew he would call, she knew she would answer just to bother him.
Lizzy drove home and sure enough William called. Lizzy answered, "Lizzy Bennet here, surprised you called."
"William Darcy here, surprised you answered." William responded.
Lizzy said, "William I think you are full of surprises. I just don't know them."
William said, "Good, Lizzy. I want you to find out my surprises slowly."
"Slow is not usually my nature, but for you I will try. Well William, I really need to get going." Lizzy looked around - her apartment was a wreck.
"Okay Lizzy, bye." William hung up the phone. He had not ever flirted with a girl and now he couldn't stop. He thought about his day. Lizzy had made the game perfect - he didn't remember the MBA football games ever being that enjoyable. He had heard her yell his name, he was silently thrilled. He was trying to remember what other women had come to the game - usually the alumni women and current students sat together and enjoyed the time together. He hadn't noticed where they sat this day. He knew the women were playing basketball in the fall for the charity fundraiser and he would go and support them. His viewpoint today was all about Lizzy and how she saw him. George Wickham was out, which meant he could pursue Lizzy without any problems.
William took a shower and came into the kitchen for a drink. "Well, well if it isn't the SMU football hero," Georgiana said giggling. She was leaning against the counter.
"Where were you today? You said you would come to my game, little sister," William asked her.
"William I was at your game, you never noticed. I brought a couple of friends with me and you never looked my direction. I did see you look another direction non-stop, though." Georgiana enjoyed watching William squirm.
"Georgiana you should have waved or came down and talked to me." William said as he thought back over the game.
"Hey, I did wave, and more than once. We finally decided to watch you as you flirted away. Is there something you want to tell me William?" Georgiana enjoyed this William, he was so different to her around this woman.
"Georgiana, nothing to say, just that there is someone I am interested in." William was very uncomfortable with knowing Georgiana had seen him talking to Lizzy.
"Well, have you asked her out yet, William?" Georgiana couldn't stop smiling at his uneasiness.
"No, not yet, I thought I would though. Maybe next time I see her," William answered. He knew he sounded ridiculous.
"William Darcy, you need to ask her out, you obviously are interested. How will she know you are if you don't ask her out?" Georgiana scolded him.
"Georgiana, I think this discussion is over for now, thank you. I am perfectly capable of asking a woman on a date. I just haven't got around to it." William said as he grabbing the orange juice and poured a big glass.
"William, she might have other guys interested in her, you never know. She looked beautiful. Am I going to know her name?" Georgiana knew he would continue to talk about her. It was written all over him - Georgiana had never seen him like this over any woman.
"Yes Georgiana, you will know her name in due time, for now the discussion is closed. To think my little sister brought undergraduates to the game and then watched me try to impress a woman. Show is over Georgiana." William was blushing. How did he look talking to Lizzy?
"That's okay, William, we saw the show, you have it bad for Miss No Name. That was the group decision, just keep me posted would you?" Georgiana laughed. William had started a life of his own, which meant one thing to her - she was freer now than she had ever been.

Lizzy was thinking over her day. She needed to talk to Jane. Jane needed to understand her limits. She could not spend any more time with William. Jane knew William was going to be there today. Jane was becoming a matchmaker. Lizzy knew she couldn't date William. She never wanted to tell him, but it was the truth. She needed her job at Lucas and Associates, she had bills to pay and he was a family member of a client. Dr. Lucas was very clear that employees couldn't date clients or their family members. Lizzy hadn't tried to be around William. Everywhere she went, he seemed to be lately. Jane was encouraging this situation and she had make Jane stop. William Darcy would never understand her need to stay at Lucas and Associates. Lizzy made her own way, and her job was very important to her. William Darcy probably had a huge trust fund somewhere, he wouldn't understand Elizabeth Bennet.
The next Monday, two dozen red roses arrived on Lizzy's desk with a card that said, More Enchanted Every Day, Your Secret Admirer.
Chapter 7
Charlotte, her boss's daughter, had finally moved in with her boyfriend, Bill Collins. He was the accountant for Theatre D as well as Mrs. De Bourgh's other interests. Bill went to school with all three of them. He was an eccentric boy, who was a geek with a pocket protector in school. He was nice, but very odd. Jane and Lizzy tried while growing up to avoid Bill as much as possible. He was embarrassing as a teenager. Lizzy loved Charlotte and had always thought she was level headed, until college. Charlotte and Bill started dating in college, much to the shock of Lizzy and Jane. They were having their first dinner party as a couple and Lizzy and Jane were on the guest list.
Jane phoned Charles at work. "Charles, Charlotte just called me, she and Bill are having a dinner party. Charlotte is worried about Lizzy feeling like the odd man out. Do you know someone you could ask to come along with you as a match for Lizzy?" She knew he would suggest William.
"Why yes, William needs a social life, let's ask him."
"William is a great idea, Charles, but Lizzy has said she was not supposed to socialize with William. I know if they had a little time together, maybe this could be all worked out." Even if Lizzy didn't know it and William never said it, Jane knew they could both be happy together.
"Leave that to me, Jane. You just bring Lizzy in your car, and I will ride with William. It will work out perfectly, just wait." When Charles told William that Lizzy was going to the dinner party, he was elated. Jane drove Lizzy to the party. The plan was to meet up there, so Charles had William pick him up in his Jaguar. Jane planned to have William drive Lizzy home.
Jane thought about William. He didn't need to know Lizzy hadn't expected him there tonight. Things would work out without hurting his feelings if Jane could help it. If they had time, Lizzy would realize for herself that she was attracted to William. She did not relish causing anyone pain.
Jane told her Charles had found this guy that hadn't dated in a while. They didn't lie, they just didn't disclose the full truth - William was the guy.
*******************
Charlotte and Bill had been remodeling the simple house inch by inch and turning it into one with a sleek modern style. Jane and Lizzy arrived. They had seen the outside, but Charlotte had not let anyone see the inside of her remodeled jewel. It looked like a typical small ranch style brick house from the outside. Charlotte opened the door for Lizzy and Jane, and they couldn't believe their eyes.
Inside, the house was filled with taste. They had an open room, as they had knocked out walls. The house was decorated in gray, black and stainless steel. The walls were of lacquered black enamel, with wood floors, and the furniture was sparse. There were no frills in the room except for the three orchids in glass tube like vases on the table.
It was simple and tasteful. Charlotte's taste was everywhere. She was control oriented and so was Bill, and the house actually showed what they did have in common. A place for everything and everything in its place. There was nothing they did not need.
Bill was placing black Japanese platters out for the guests at the island.
"Charlotte, I knew you had been working hard, but I had no idea how hard. It looks great, just your style, too." Lizzy hugged Charlotte and Jane gave her the cheesecake.
"Charlotte, you know I love it. Bill must be very handy." Jane looked at Bill smiling, he knew Charlotte did most of the work but was willing to take the credit.
William and Charles knocked on the door. William had no idea what to bring, so he brought a bottle of wine and Charles brought a Herbie Hancock CD. Charlotte opened the door.
"Glad you came, Charles. Oh thanks, Bill loves his music."
"This is William Darcy, Charlotte. He is my business partner and friend. I think you may remember him from Theatre D." Bill looked up and ran to the door, almost knocking over Jane and Charlotte.
"William Darcy, oh we are delighted to have you here!" Bill was practically salivating. Mrs. DeBourgh had made it clear to him that William Darcy was not only a nephew, but a favored one as well.
"Nice to meet you, Charlotte and Bill, " William said as he shook their hands and passed the wine to Charlotte. The house was striking, but he saw only one vision in his eyes - Elizabeth Bennet.
He stepped inside and focused on Lizzy, the soft candlelight surrounding her face. He had never seen her dressed like this. Her dress had spaghetti straps - it was wine colored, and ever so slightly transparent.
Lizzy saw William. Lizzy tried not to smile, but she did and he saw it. William smiled, "Lizzy, nice to see you again."
"Yes nice to see you, too." Lizzy bit her lip. She wanted to strangle Jane.
Lizzy pulled Jane and Charlotte aside into the open kitchen area. "Jane, you know full well I can't see him." Her face was flushed red. Jane was sneaky, and she was caught.
"Lizzy, it is just dinner, there are six of us. I am sure Dr. Lucas would understand," Jane said. She knew Lizzy was mad, but felt that she would surely open her eyes soon.
"Look, this isn't funny. Charlotte, you understand my plight?" Lizzy felt like a caged animal - she had no vehicle and no way out without looking ridiculous.
Charlotte laughed, "Like Daddy cares, Lizzy. William must be interested - he is here tonight. You need to consider him."
"Listen, my job is important to me. There are rules I have to follow." Lizzy bit her bottom lip and blew a wisp of her hair. How could my own sister do this to me?
With a wave of her hand, Charlotte dismissed her concerns, "I think Daddy wouldn't care Lizzy, he loves you."
"I signed an agreement. He loves me but that doesn't change the fact that I have to follow it. We have regular meetings over these policies. Don't you understand? He takes this seriously, as do I." Lizzy looked at Charlotte with amazement. How could she not understand?
Charlotte just shrugged her shoulders and walked away. As far as she was concerned, Lizzy couldn't see the forest for the trees. William was nuts about her and Daddy would get over it and welcome William into the fold, she muttered as she took the hors d'oeuvres to serve Bill and Charles. Charlotte loved Bill and was totally committed to him in every way. There was no job more important to her than Bill. Lizzy had better wake up.
William watched Lizzy talk to her friends with curiosity. She seemed upset. Her face was flushed and she seemed ready to scream. She had greeted him in such a friendly way. Wonder what had they done?
William walked over to her, as she watched him. Maybe she'd brighten up if I talk her. "So Lizzy, are you in a play this week?"
Lizzy feeling like everyone was watching her reaction, "No, not this week or next week. I haven't seen any plays I want to do right now." She tried to contain herself, it wasn't William's fault that Jane had tricked her. He could be very kind at times.
William moved closer to her face and whispered in her ear, "You look wonderful tonight." He took her scent in. Her scent had not left him since the day in the elevator, to him she was luscious in everyway.
Lizzy whispered back with, "Thank you, William. This old thing, just got it out of the closet." Lizzy looked down at her dress in wonder. She had gone shopping and bought a dress that was not her usual style. She was open to dating now, it was just a shock that William was the man that saw her in her new dress. She had hoped to impress a guy Charles and Jane thought would be right for her, never thinking that Jane would double cross her.
William grinned. "I'd love to see that closet sometime, I bet I'd find it fascinating."
She shifted uncomfortably, clearing her throat and speaking in a whisper. "William, I rarely let others see my closet."
"Now I am intrigued," he said as he winked at her. She was mesmerizing to him.
She stepped back, needing some space to think. "I doubt that you will ever see my sanctuary. You see, I'm as private as you are Mr. Darcy."
William smiled. "Oh, I know you are private. That's why I have to see it."
Lizzy touched his arm. The cotton shirt was crisp and cool under her hand. Her mood had changed. "I need to talk to you about something,"
William was perplexed. Lizzy looked so serious. "What is it?"
"Can we go outside? I really need to say this privately." Lizzy looked around. She felt on parade for the others, she knew William would take it better in private.
"Sure." He took her hand and walked her out to the patio. The patio was more homey than the inside of the house. It was made of gray paving stones and had a table and four chairs with lanterns surrounding it.
Lizzy felt more comfortable in this environment - the starkness of their house made it hard to feel any emotion or think. Lizzy was numb and lost for a moment - she hadn't felt a man touch her in so long.
William admired how Lizzy looked in the light of the candle lanterns while she struggled with her words. He had always seen her in total control - she seemed so different now, Is this the Lizzy others know?
Lizzy started what she didn't want to say. "William, I work for Dr. Lucas. I have signed agreements that make it impossible for me to see you anymore. I am not allowed to see any patient or family member of patient's outside the office. I shouldn't have come here tonight and really Chili's was a no-no too. So I am sorry, but no matter how I feel, this has to be the last time we meet."
William was stunned. He hadn't even thought about it. He said, "Why?"
"Well, when Georgiana was discharged I probably reviewed her file, I saw her diagnosis."
"Okay, Lizzy. What circumstance made her ill?" William crossed his arms and waited. He wanted to know what Lizzy knew.
"Look, I see thirty to sixty patients a week. I have no clue. I made a habit to forget specifics in files. I only remember the last patient I spoke to. You paid her bill, so I don't know and couldn't see it if I wanted to." Lizzy was glad she didn't know the answer. It somehow made it easier to be around William.
William uncrossed his arms and smiled smugly. Problem solved "See there, Lizzy. She isn't your client."
"William, the rules aren't negotiable. I'm sorry, I would really like to know you better." Lizzy couldn't believe he wouldn't accept this. Lizzy watched William as he spoke.
"I am full of surprises. I rarely take no for an answer - you'll see." He bent down and brushed his hand against her cheek.
He had done it again, and she lost herself.
Finally, she smiled. "Well, William Darcy, you don't have a choice."
Lizzy was happy and sad at the same time. Why did the only guy in Dallas she thought was interesting have to be a patient's relative? "I think we should go in now," Lizzy said.
He took her hand in his, moving closer. "Are you sure you want to go in?"
"I think it's best - I am not suppose to be alone with you." Lizzy was feeling anxious in his presence. He was dashing and she had to remain determined about her actions. She would not be a woman left without a man or a job, no matter how she felt when he touched her.
"You're safe with me you know." The twinkle is his eye didn't seem safe to Lizzy. She needed space from William.
"Your lips say that, not so sure about your eyes, William. You have to understand I have to maintain a business relationship. My job is important to me, it pays my bills."
"Well, I know what I want Lizzy. Can I talk to Dr. Lucas about this?"
"No, it is my job. I'll talk to Dr. Lucas. I don't want him thinking I would jeopardize my job."
Lizzy smiled at William. His eyes sparkled in the moonlight. Lizzy had forgotten since that day of the football game how beautiful William Darcy was. A million guys in Dallas and I have to throw this one back.
William asked the question he really wanted to ask. "Lizzy, will you regret not getting to know me better?"
She gazed at him. "William, I didn't say I regret not knowing you better, I said I have to follow my agreement with Dr. Lucas, my desires are not the focus."
William knew she was interested in him. He just needed to act. He knew if he really tried, most women found him most attractive. The funny part was, he had never attempted to gain someone's affections. Ladies fell for him, not the other way around. "Lizzy you're right, let's go in and eat."
He spent the rest of the evening watching her and trying to figure out a way for her to be with him. Meanwhile, Jane and Charles had a devious plan. Jane was going to grab Charles and drive off before Lizzy could get in the car. Lizzy's only ride home would be with Collins or William. Jane knew what Lizzy would do. It would take forty-five minutes drive to Lizzy's apartment. It was plenty of time for Lizzy and William to talk, plenty of time for Lizzy to realize William wanted her.
Jane went to the powder room and didn't come back for a while, and according to plan, Charles went to go check on her. After ten minutes, Lizzy knew something was up. She heard Jane giggling and walking in the direction of the back door, and she turned just in time to see them jump in their car and drive off. Lizzy turned and looked accusingly at Charlotte. Charlotte had no idea Jane and Charles were planning to ditch her. She felt awful about it. "Do you need Bill to take you home?"
William who had been watching the whole time, tried not to laugh. By the look on Lizzy's face, it was apparent that driving with Bill was not her idea of a good time. "Lizzy I could take you home if you need a ride, or would Bill be a better choice?" He just couldn't help but rub it in a little.
Lizzy realized he was laughing under his breath. "No, thanks for the offer Charlotte, but I'd hate to put you out. William, I can ride with you, if you don't mind taking me all the way to Valley Ranch."
William smiled smugly. "I thought you would never ask, Lizzy. I'd be glad to take you. Ready?"
"Oh yes, I'm ready," Lizzy said as she kissed Charlotte goodbye and thanked her. William shook Bill's hand and turned to her, putting his hand on the small of her back as they stepped out the front door and took in the night air. William opened Lizzy's door for her and handed her in to the car. This she enjoyed. As a matter of fact she enjoyed everything about William. His manners, his hand on hers, his eyes, the smell of his car, it was all good.
He turned on the stereo. Bach was playing. "Do you mind classical, or would you prefer to listen to something else?"
"Oh, I love Bach, this is fine." As he drove, Lizzy contemplated the man sitting next to her. How could he be so perfect? He loves football, has incredible manners, likes Chilis and Bach. I know he has a flaw… his overprotective nature. She wanted to ask him something, she wanted to hear him laugh just once, once before it was over, this was their last time alone.
"You know, there's this guy - William Darcy, he calls me every time I'm in Dallas driving, do you think he'll call me tonight?" Lizzy hoped he enjoyed flirting as much as she did.
"I'm sure William Darcy is too busy to call tonight, I hear he has his eye on someone." William grinned. He was enjoying Lizzy. Georgiana was right - he had to make a move. He needed to ask her out, regardless of some office rule. He knew he could make her happy.
Lizzy smiled back, he was flirting again. She knew she shouldn't flirt, but she did anyway. "I wonder if she is interested in him?"
"I certainly hope so, they say he has a bad case." William reveled in the flirting. Lizzy was sexy, and he was enticed by her spice. She is so different from other women.
He turned off the freeway and wended his way around the apartment complex and parked. William jumped out and opened her door. He was enchanted. She was beautiful and he wanted every inch of her. William had been denied few things and could not fathom never seeing her again. He would move heaven and earth for Lizzy. He went around to her door, took her hand and helped her out of the car.
She shivered. He thought it was a night chill, but she knew it was from him being so close to her.
"Here, you must be cold." He carefully wrapped her arms with her shawl. He caught himself touching the curve of her shoulder.
"Thank you, yes, I am a little chilled." He didn't need to know she was so affected by his touch. Control and distance were what she needed, yet she was so drawn to him, her skin felt weak.
"William, would you like a cup of coffee?" She did it. What did I do that for? Lizzy surprised herself - she was actually inviting a man in her apartment. Suddenly, she had a panicked feeling.
"I think coffee would be nice right now." He would have accepted mud if she had offered it. He started to fiddle with his keys.
"Just coffee, okay?" Lizzy said, as she tried to regain her composure.
"Of course, just coffee," William said as he smiled. He wanted so much more than coffee, he couldn't admit it to Lizzy. He had begun to think of little else other than her. When would he see her next? He had everything but her. He felt she was within his reach. He should be confident about her, but she scared him. There was something she was holding back more than her job. and until she brought down her wall he couldn't have her.
Lizzy ran into the apartment quickly. Oh man did I make my bed? Please let there be no underwear and bras hanging on the shower curtain. She couldn't remember the last guy she had been alone with in her apartment, and she was worried. There was that Erte in the nude, and the Art Nouveau lamp with exposed breasts. How did other women do it? Okay, calm down I'm sure he's seen breasts before… just not here. Somehow, showing him her apartment rattled her. She was a ball of emotional nerves. She scrambled around. She had made her bed, but there was a sports bra thrown on the nightstand, and she grabbed it and threw it in the drawer. She ran to the kitchen to make coffee while he looked at her books and the Erte.
"Lizzy, who is Uta Hagan?" he called out, as she poured the water.
"What? Did you say something?" She looked under the cabinet at him. How do people entertain? I feel so inept.
"Who is Uta Hagan?" he repeated as he held up a book that was well worn.
"Oh, she is a famous acting coach in New York. She is dead now, but that book Audition is considered the bible of a true actor." Lizzy looked at him holding it. The title was faded, she hadn't noticed until he held it.
"I see, so it seems you read this often." William looked at her other books. Shakespeare, Dickens, Edgar Allan Poe, and then Stanley Marcus. He put the book back and touched the bindings of the other books.
"I guess so, mostly when I am nervous about an audition. It seems odd to rely on a book, but her advice I trust." She looked down, she had revealed so much to him, he had this ability to unravel her. He could make her reveal herself layer by layer. No man had ever been able to do this before, and she wasn't sure if she liked it or hated it. She felt more exposed than her lamp.
William thought about her apartment. It was tasteful, and yet she was very nervous about him being there. Did I catch her off guard? He loved Erte. He knew it was a print, but her style showed. Lizzy had taste beyond her money. She was cultured and more refined than he expected. He had misjudged her - her taste was no office clerk's taste. She loved Bach and Art Deco. She was a spectacular woman.
Lizzy calmly walked out of the kitchen, smoothing her dress and trying to look nonchalant. "I'll be right back." Once out of sight, she ran into the bathroom and turned on the Art Nouveau lamp and took off her panty hose. Finally relieved, she came out and found that he put on music and tuned in the classical station. William looked like Adonis again. He was tall and sure in his stature, he had an air of casual confidence. His crisp long sleeve light blue shirt with his initials on the pocket and khaki pants seemed to fit him to a tee. She had never noticed men's clothing before. Now memories of his body were etched in her brain - first of him looking uncomfortable in the elevator, then of him on the football field, a body of grace and motion. Now he was in her living room. He was delicious, and she couldn't taste him. Why was the grass always greener on the other side? Why did she want him now that he was forbidden fruit?
He was looking out the window, then he turned to her. She flushed as she looked into his eyes. She felt like he could read her mind. She wanted him and he knew it.
"Lizzy, can I use your restroom?" The bathroom Thank God I grabbed the bra, he could have seen it.
"Oh, of course, it's the door on the right."
William walked into the bathroom. It was tasteful and had soft lighting. She had three mirrored doors for a closet, and William had to take a look. He thumbed through the clothes, looking for a glimpse for clues of her style. In this room he felt close to her, he touched the textures. Her closet was full of tailored style clothing, all business. At the end there was a section of avant-garde clothing, these must be her audition clothes. There was no dress like she was wearing tonight, not even close in style or color. She had gone and bought a special dress for him, he thought. So he had seen her sanctuary. Why did she call it a sanctuary? As he turned, he saw the lamp with nude breasts. So Lizzy likes nude art, he thought. He took mental notes. She had definite tastes. He felt naughty, like he was a spy. William looked at the lamp again and smiled. He knew her secrets, he was sure.
Lizzy opened up the balcony doors, taking a breath trying to calm down. She went back to the kitchen and poured two cups of coffee. She wanted to be a fabulous hostess like Charlotte, but she was confounded. What did he take in his coffee? She had no clue. There was so much she didn't know. She looked at the cups and found William waiting for her. He looked good in her apartment, like he belonged. She smiled at him, a little embarrassed. "William, I'm sorry. I don't know what you like in your coffee."
"That's easy, Lizzy. I take everything. Cream and sugar, if you have it." William smiled at her, and she blushed. Lizzy went to the stereo and changed the music to her custom mixed CD. "Corner of the Sky" came on. She thought about her singing in the elevator that day with William not even knowing. He caught her smile. "What is it? Why are you grinning so?"
"Nothing, just a memory." William picked up his cup and touched her hand. Lizzy looked at her coffee and his hand. "William why don't we step outside, there is a nice view there." She gently wrapped his free hand in hers and took him out to the tiny balcony.
"Sure, wherever you wish." He followed her lead with a silent prayer for the moment not to end. Lizzy slowly let her grip of his hand go. He shut his eyes for a second and squeezed her hand. She was finally close and she had touched him. He appeared quiet, inside his heart was pounding. She brought up so much emotion in him, it took all his energy to contain it. In all his life, asking someone out had never been so hard. They sat at the cafe table, and there was a moment when he was unsure what to do next. For God's sake, William. Speak to her. "Lizzy you have a lovely apartment."
"Thank you, I do like it. My favorite mornings are spent drinking coffee out here. I know your place must be beautiful, but I appreciate what I have," Lizzy said, as she looked at the canal.
"You have a home here. My house is more formal I would say, but this apartment reflects you." William watched her as she turned her eyes on him and stood up.
"I just realized I really don't know much about you at all," Lizzy said as she looked at him. Here he was, seeing her so much of her life, her work, her friends, her passion and her home and she knew so little of him. Where is his office, what does he do? Why hasn't he told me about himself? Lizzy couldn't decide if William was keeping his life a secret on purpose or by accident. When he spoke to her, he asked the questions. He had revealed only a thimble full of himself. A part of her wanted to know more, but the other part knew that if he was better than her image of him it would be painful to let him go tonight. No it's better for me this way, the unknown is easy to let go of.
"Look, why don't you give me a chance, get to know me. I am really not an awful guy." William was pleading with her - something he had never done before.
"William, it's not that I think you're not a great guy, it's just that you are a guy I can't see right now." It hurt Lizzy to be so blunt with him.
William smiled. She hadn't rejected him - she said she couldn't, not that she didn't want to. He saw a ray of hope and drove forward. He touched her hand.
"Please let me take you out, dinner, dancing, a movie - whatever you want."
"William, I can't. I wish I could, but my job is important to me, and it also pays the bills." Lizzy couldn't bring herself to take her eyes off his hand holding hers. William pulled Lizzy up out of the chair and to the railing. He stood behind her and wrapped his arms around her waist, taking her all in.
The setting was perfect. William gently pulled her hair back and kissed her neck. William spoke softly in her ear, "Lizzy look at me and say you don't want to see me again." He turned her around to look at him. He had to see her reaction.
Lizzy was about to melt away. It had been so long, and he was so gentle. She couldn't believe this was happening. His kiss was exactly what she had dreamed of. It made her go weak. She was so vulnerable and she hated feeling so affected by him. Don't stop, William. Lizzy took a deep breath and looked into his eyes, "William I... I ..." She couldn't finish and didn't want to.
He pulled her to him. She knew she should stop it, but this felt so good. She fit into his chest perfectly. He kissed her, he pressed his lips against hers and she kissed him back. It was a soft kiss, a kiss that felt like drops of honey were on her lips. William's honey was sweet and gentle. " Oh Lizzy," he said.
She put her hand first on his chest. She could feel the initials embroidered on his shirt and the hard muscle under it. Without really thinking she wrapped her arms around his neck and pulled him toward her.
Her lips parted to say something but he wanted to kiss more than talk. Their kiss deepened. He knew he had to stop - she was too important to him for a one-night stand.
"Lizzy, please say you'll let me take you out. I can't take this." William wrapped her into him and put his face into her hair. She smelled so good.
Lizzy, wake up. He is asking you out on a date. She breathed, she regained her distance. "William, I just can't do that. I shouldn't even be alone with you right now. Like I said before, there is much I don't know about you and this is where it has to end. I work for a reason. Dr. Lucas has been accommodating about my acting. I have a perfect situation, William. I work and act. This balance has been hard-earned, and I can't throw it away for a date. A professor once told me a job and friends will always be there, but a romantic relationship can come and go. I can't risk my whole life on a date, no matter what."
Lizzy looked down at her dress. She had never thought he would be so close. She paused, wanting it not to end, and looked into his eyes with a pain she had not known before. William saw in her eyes such innocence. She was fragile and in pain. She was suddenly a little mouse backed into a corner, yet she had always appeared so confident. This Lizzy was scared of him, of what he wanted from her.
William stared at her. "Lizzy", he moaned. No woman had made him beg and moan. He had to have her, no matter what she had said.
Lizzy felt his stare deepen. She knew he was hard to say no to. He could be so tender, not at all what she had assumed him to be. His soft side melted her.
"There's a fundraiser for Theatre D next week. Go with me." William did his best pitiful look to convince her. "Caroline will probably be there and it will be a very long night."
"You don't like Caroline?" Lizzy was surprised. She had seen them together at Greater Tuna.
"Good God, no. She is Charles's sister. We have gone places together, but I have never dated Caroline." He was relieved to tell her.
"Well, I am going to the fundraiser, I'll see you there. It's not a date though, and we can't go together. Look, I need my job. Dr. Lucas has been great and I could never find a job as great as this one."
She knew he would never comprehend her plight. Jobs like hers were not a dime a dozen, and he could fly out of her life as fast as he flew in. She would never put a man before herself. She wasn't going to make the same mistakes she'd seen others make. Besides, William had to be a ladies' man. He seemed too confident - he could have his pick of women. He was too good of a kisser not to be a womanizer. Lizzy was convinced she would forget William's kisses if she just concentrated enough on work. She needed to keep busy. Work had been enough before and she would be fine without William Darcy. She was no conquest to conquer. He would find himself an Old Money snob, and Lizzy had her passion.
William stood there stunned. He had never known a woman that frustrated and enchanted him on so many levels.
William sighed out loud. She had cut him off at the pass, she was a challenge. "Well, I guess this is where I say I had better go."
Lizzy took his arm and walked toward the door. "William, thanks for the ride home, I'll see you at the fundraiser next week." She smiled at him. He was kind, just bullheaded.
"Look, anytime you need a ride, just let me know." He brushed the back of her hand - her skin was soft.
"Thanks, but I doubt I'll need any more rides, Jane won't trick me again." Lizzy felt her hand tingle. He shouldn't have this effect on her. She had to remain strong, no matter how strong his shoulders looked in his shirt.
William squeezed her hand and spoke into her hair. "Goodnight Lizzy, until next week."
"Goodnight," she said as her lips touched his hair. He smelled earthy, yet clean. She caught herself and pulled slowly away from William.
He turned and left her. He was gone. Lizzy went out to the balcony and grabbed the cups. She looked at the canal. The water reflection had changed - the moonlight was not as bright as when William was next to her. She shut the balcony door and put on the alarm. She turned out the lights and went to bed. She lay in bed wondering, what was William Darcy all about? Why was he interested in me? He could pick any woman in Dallas. I am just an office clerk. Jane had surely bribed him to come to Charlotte's. William Darcy is out of my league. She barely knew him. So William didn't date Caroline. Wonder if Caroline knew that? No, William was not hers to concern herself with. She would see William at Theatre D and it would be a patron - actor relationship. Her career plan was still intact. She would keep her head low and stay focused. William Darcy would find another woman to kiss, and Lizzy would continue on track.
****************************
William walked into the kitchen and opened the refrigerator. He grabbed a bottle of water.
"Oh I caught you, you big sneak. How was your date, William?" Georgiana closed the refrigerator door and smiled.
"Georgiana, I didn't say I had a date." William was in no mood for this.
"So you came in at midnight, because you were working? I know you saw her. Tell me all about it." She leaned back against the cabinet and crossed her arms. She knew he was taken with Miss No Name.
"Listen, I didn't have a date. Right now I don't know when I will date. Do we have to talk about my love life again, Georgiana?" William looked down at his water bottle, turned the lid and tossed it into the trash. He was frustrated with Lizzy, and now Georgiana was pushing it.
"William, what have you done? Did Miss No Name shoot you down? Surely not William Darcy, CEO of Darcy and Associates. No woman can resist him, just ask Caroline Bingley." Georgiana was enjoying William the Unsure. She had rattled his cage. I am beginning to like this girl.
"Very funny little sister. Not everyone is impressed with William Darcy. No more teasing. I am too tired to fight back." William started to leave the kitchen, but Georgiana grabbed his arm.
"Look I saw both of you at the football game. She was interested, and I know you are crazy about her. What happened to change that? Maybe she cares more than you know. Maybe you just misunderstood her is all." Georgiana hugged him. He had been by her side through so much. She wanted him to be as happy as she had seen him at the game.
"Right, she adores me. If only, Georgiana." He hugged her back and walked down the hall to his room. Before that night his room felt warm and safe, now he was lost. He realized the client clause would keep him from Lizzy. Georgiana couldn't know the reason why. She would blame herself, just as she had finally gotten better. Dr. Lucas was a great psychiatrist, and William was grateful. He had to find a way to be with Lizzy.
He tossed and turned in bed. Finally, unable to sleep, he got up and turned on the light. What was happening to him? Life had always made sense around him. When his parents died, he focused on Georgiana and business. Georgiana's struggles were tough, but he had her on track. His life had been uncomplicated overall. Whenever he had desires, they were easily fulfilled. He knew if he wanted it, it was possible. He always had the drive necessary to succeed and the education to make it happen. Now Lizzy had turned his life upside down, and she had no idea. She crept into his dreams. His work was unsatisfying. Everything seemed dull compared to her. He had to find a solution.
William decided that if he turned this into a business problem he would know what to do. That was his forte, business. This problem was no different than trying to sell a client on his company. He sat down at his desk and turned on his computer, he typed down his thoughts. He made two lists: one was how to move on without Lizzy. The other was how to win her heart. He brainstormed as he did at work, only this time his client was Lizzy. He wanted to throw out the move on list, but he kept it. Lizzy was extremely stubborn, and he didn't want to rewrite it. Now he had a plan to capture her heart.
*******************************
Lizzy was engrossed in her file, trying to figure out how to find a client. She worried that he might have gone off the wagon. Ruby opened the door and barged in. "Hey, sweet cheeks, what are you so distraught about?"
"Ruby, nothing is wrong, really. I just have to find this client."
"That isn't what has you off kilter, Lizzy. Go on, tell me your troubles. I have a few minutes of lunch left." Ruby sat down and crossed her legs. She had parked herself. Lizzy knew she had to open herself to Ruby or she would never leave.
"Okay, okay. I met someone I actually find attractive, but I can't date him. Suddenly that is all I think about, him. He is untouchable and I want to touch him."
"Sugar, what in the world could drag you from a cute guy? You need to see him, post haste. What is the hang up here?"
"It's that client clause, Ruby. I told Dr. Lucas I had run into him socially and he understood. He just said he expects me to separate business from pleasure, which I am going to do. Only hitch is he is going to an event this weekend and I am going too."
"So, does this guy have addiction problems Lizzy? You know, handsome men with addictions can turn ugly quickly."
"No, Ruby, this guy is not the client. He seems pretty normal, his sister was a client."
"Okay, I need to clear this up. He is normal, handsome and interested?"
"Well he did ask me out, last time I saw him." Lizzy held back her smile. Ruby didn't need to know he kissed her.
"He is handsome and has asked you out, and you are seeing him this weekend. Well Sugar, there is only one thing to do. Get dolled up, flirt like hell and make him marry you this weekend!"
"Very funny, Ruby. What am I going to do?"
"You are going to get dolled up and enjoy yourself this weekend. I would suggest a quickie marriage but you poo-pooed that idea. So settle for a special night. Meantime, maybe Dr. Lucas will change his mind. Now get back to work and find that client."
"Right, I can't change the rules and I need to work. Lizzy looked at the paper. Look great, flirt and get married. Ruby sure didn't expect much.
Later that day, two dozen red roses arrived. The card was signed, "In awe of you, your Secret Admirer.
Chapter 8
"Ruby, can you get someone to cover and come to my office for a minute", Lizzy said to her intercom.
"Sure Sweet Cheeks, be right there in a sec."
Lizzy was looking out the window, at the light reflected on the mirrored skyscrapers of downtown Dallas. She loved this city, she loved her work, but somehow, they just weren't enough. She wanted something more.
Lizzy turned around, her face was so sad. "Ruby, I have no idea what I am doing. You said flirt like hell, well I can flirt and I have been flirting. This guy is like no other Ruby; I am over my head in the flirt department. Do you know how long it has been since I wanted a guy to look my direction?"
Ruby started to answer, but Lizzy was a having a big pity party and Ruby would wait her out.
"Well it has been years, Ruby, years. Now tell me how do I know if this guy is just after sex or a relationship. I am absolutely confounded by him and I don't know how to tell anymore." Lizzy was done she thought, her face was fully dropped.
"Okey Dokey, Lizzy, you pick up your bottom lip and listen real good. You are a beautiful woman that men find attractive, it's just you have had your head in the sand for a while. There are ways to tell and I can sniff the low lifes out quick. Here is my first question; I am just doing this for a reference okay Honey Pie? He asked you out, did he by any chance kiss you?"
Lizzy face turned six shades of red. “Just exactly how did you know that?"
"Honey Pie, I read you like a book, and only a great guy with sweet lips would have you so off track."
"Ruby, please get on with the tips! I need to know how to tell and more information on flirting. I told you he was very smooth."
"Sugar, it is so easy I shouldn't even charge you. Men that are only after sex are like snake charmers; they can do it any time. A man that is really interested won't let you out of his sight without a panic attack, that is since he has already kissed you."
"I am still lost, what exactly do you mean? Snake charmers?"
"Look Sweet Cheeks, snake charmers think anytime they get near a snake they can charm it, they aren't attentive when they aren't charming. Does he leave your side or is he always there?"
"Hard to say we have only been at things where I had no idea he would be at. He seems to notice me. Ruby this is too hard, I should just cancel and hide at home, I can't date him anyway."
"Honey Pie, you need this, don't you dare chicken out now. Now listen to me, if you need to do stuff leave him by himself. If you come back and he has a woman on his arm, throw that stinking fish back in the lake. He ain't for you. Now if you come back and he is wondering where you went or he sees you talking to someone else and gets jealous, you got a biter on your hook."
"That I can do, I need to do some things tomorrow night anyway. You think he would be jealous if I talk to someone? Honestly Ruby?"
"Yessiree, he would be if he wants for you his own. So let him stew, it won't hurt him a bit. Then you just show him you are still attracted to him. I still say a quickie wedding in Vegas would fix every problem you got."
"Ruby, why do I even listen to you, a quickie wedding? He would run for the hills, he is polished like no man I have met before."
"Sugar, just put your best dress on and make the night a memory. You know you might need this, Dr. Lucas would prefer you to have safe sex." Ruby pulled out a neon pink condom and plopped it on Lizzy's desk.
"Alright, that is enough, no sex not this weekend, this flirting is too much pressure already. And Ruby, I will still be single Monday morning, so don't even go there, I mean it." Ruby laughed and opened the door.
"Here is the latest gossip on Lizzy, girls, she ain't getting any this weekend, but boy does she need some." The ladies laughed out loud behind their cubicles, she was famous for announcement making. She had nicknamed Jane "Barbie" because she was so perky. Her observations had always been on target.

William got out his black tux. He had to tie his bow tie. He thought about Lizzy's closet, wondering what dress she would wear. His heart was hers for the taking and tonight would be the only way to wear her down. He decided if Georgiana could help him it would be easier.
"Little Sister, I need you to help me tie this. I have this fundraiser tonight?" He walked into her room without thinking, for so long it had been mostly the two of them. He glanced up and her friend Tina was laying on her bed, they were looking at their books.
"Oh I'm sorry, I didn't know you had company Georgiana. How do you do. I am William, Georgiana's brother." Tina laughed hysterically.
"I saw you at the game, you never saw us did you?" she said still giggling.
William suddenly blushed, Next time I walk in here, I am checking first.. "No, I didn't see Georgiana or her friends. Now back to my bow tie, can you help me please?” The girls felt sorry for him; he needed Miss No Name in the worst way.
"Okay big Brother, I will help. What is Miss No Name wearing? Do you know?" Georgiana couldn't resist saying it.
"No I don't, that is the problem and quit calling her that." William was very frustrated.
"Calm down now, you will see her soon enough and maybe this time you will ask her name.”
"Great Georg, you think I don't know her name, do you know what time it is?" William was looking at his watch.
"You know I am kidding. Let me see, you look better." Georgiana patted his chest.
"I think I have the sweetest sister in the world, how did you know what I needed?" William hugged and kissed her. She was a jewel to him most times, even if she teased him to the ends of the earth.
“She will think you are very handsome. Don't worry, just relax and have fun."
Georgiana smiled at him, he was finally calm, more like the William of old.
"Having fun may be difficult. Aunt Catherine will be there, but I will focus on my reason for being there and try to keep her away from...." He stopped himself; Georgiana would say her name a hundred times a day.
"Oh almost, Tina I almost got it out of him! Now go, William, go get yourself dressed up. Enjoy yourself, I will be over at Tina's if you decide to come home." Georgina winked, he knew she meant.
"Well nice to meet you Tina. I think I may be home late. Georgiana, just keep your cell on so I can find you, ok?" William wanted out before she gave him a condom, he knew that was next.
"Yes I keep it on Big Brother alert at all times, now shoo." Georgiana pushed him out and closed the door. Tina and she were still giggling as he walked down the hall.
Tonight was the night for him to show her he wanted her. It would be tricky with Aunt Catherine and Richard there. He knew he would have to stay one step ahead so Lizzy would not get run over, chewed up and spit out by Aunt Catherine. Richard could help he hoped, he had seemed supportive of William dating Lizzy. He hoped when he needed him, Richard would be there.
~*~
Lizzy looked in her closet. She had to look breathtaking on a beer budget. She took out her black satin dress with a plunging neckline and off the shoulders sleeves. This will have to do. She put on the only diamonds she owned in her ears. Her father at times spoiled her and bought them for her. “Every beautiful woman needs diamonds," he said as he gave them to her. She added her pearl necklace, she was a classic beauty. Black dress, pearls and diamonds, I am so dull. What Lizzy could not see was her own beauty, and William Darcy had noticed it in the moment he met her. Lizzy looked at herself in the mirror, now I am dolled up, next flirt like hell.
She ran to her bedroom and rummaged for her tape. The phone rang, she looked at it with disgust. Saturday night - a regular check up phone call. Please God, not now!
"Lizzy do you have plans tonight, or are you staying home again? I do wish you would go out and have fun like other girls." Her mother meant well, at least that is what Lizzy kept telling herself.
"Yes, Mom. I have a fundraiser tonight. I need to go or I will be late."
"Oh good, Darling. Now remember, find a guy with the biggest wallet and make sure you try and look good, would you?"
"Mom, sure, a guy with a big wallet. Those men come along so frequent and they just adore me, I am sure I will find one tonight. I have to go, Mom. Bye."
"Smile and be polite Lizzy!"
"Bye, Mom." Lizzy hung up the phone, relieved no one could hear her. She was beyond description and it drove Lizzy mad. Her mother's biggest complaint was Lizzy was too picky about men.
She finally found her tape, grabbed her bag and headed out the door. As she walked down the steps, she could feel someone was watching her. She looked around but didn't see anyone. On her windshield was a note,
Lizzy,
I wanted to disable your car so we could ride together but I had a better thought. I am across the parking lot waiting.
William
Lizzy looked over, and sure enough, there was a green Jag. William waved; Lizzy smiled a big smile and waved back. She stepped in her Camry and backed up. She knew he would follow and she relished him being behind her every move. She put in the tape and started her vocalization. Lizzy had grown up in Dallas; she zigged and zagged on the highway. Highway driving made her vocalization easier. She never looked at the other drivers; she knew they thought she was talking to herself.
William had hoped she would step in his Jag, but it was not to be. She wasn't going to ride with him, but he was sure she was happy he was behind her. She turned where William wouldn't have, but he followed her anyway. He was impressed with her quickness and directness. William followed her like a puppy dog.
She parked and grabbed her bag she started to open the door. "Here, let me get that for you, Lizzy." He took her hand and pulled her out of the car, as he smelled her hair. She was ravishing in his eyes, she captivated him.
She looked into his dark eyes; she had never noticed the depth of them. In his black tuxedo, he was stunning specimen of man. “Thanks," Lizzy said.
"Do you mind if I say how lovely you look tonight?" He saw his soul in her eyes. His eyes took her in; she was a vision in black.
"Thank you, you clean up well yourself," Lizzy said as they walked to the door. He took her arm, like a proud peacock showing his feathers. William and Lizzy had never arrived arm in arm, she seemed to float into the theatre.
"William, so nice to see you. Lizzy you look wonderful." Charlotte hugged Lizzy. She was glad Lizzy had not chased away William. She was convinced William was mad for her; Lizzy was crazy about him only she hadn't realized it yet.
"You do too, Charlotte. Where is Bill?" Lizzy scanned the lobby.
Bill had been busy setting up the table for contributions, but when he noticed William Darcy he got up for the table and ran to shake William's hand.
"William, so glad you came. I know your aunt will be arriving shortly. We are so grateful to both of you." Bill was sickening sweet when pleading for money. This was the side of Bill that made Lizzy shudder.
"Really Bill I was glad to come. Lizzy had said she was coming, so here we are." William felt uneasy being complimented for what he wanted to do anyway. He looked at Lizzy and realized Bill hadn't spoken to her. She was straightening her dress still scanning the lobby. He wanted to touch her hand; he wasn't sure who or what she was searching for.
"William, I will be right back," Lizzy called over her shoulder as she left. She went through the theatre door.
William surveyed the lobby. Bill and Charlotte had gone to their table and he was unsure without Lizzy. He saw there was gallery of pictures from all the productions. He started looking at the pictures, he found Lizzy in quite a few. His aunt had wanted him to come to shows at the theatre. He had been preoccupied with work and Georgiana. He came upon the Taming of the Shrew pictures. He gazed as he remembered that night when Lizzy came on stage. He had only seen her. The people around him that night were a blur. Lizzy was all he remembered.
Suddenly he heard his name. "William, I'm back." He felt foolish looking at a picture of her. He wondered if she knew how he felt that night.
"Look, there is a picture of you handing me the roses." Lizzy smiled at the picture, and then glanced at William she was relieved to find him alone.
"Really? I didn't see that. My aunt will be happy to know I came to a show." He had focused on Lizzy's picture so much he never thought to look for one with both of them.
"Where is your Aunt?" Lizzy looked around for an older woman.
"Oh, she isn't here yet, you will know when she arrives. Can I get you a glass of wine?" William relished these moments without Aunt Catherine to spend time with Lizzy.
"That would be nice, William." She saw him as well mannered Flirt like hell.
He returned with a big grin and two glasses of white wine. Lizzy was staring at the picture, recalling how special the night was and how William had slowly crept into her life. Since that picture he seemed to be around every corner. In the elevator he had seemed so cold, now he was kind and thoughtful.
"You know, I was nervous that night." William said as he handed her glass to her and motioned with his hand.
"Why William Darcy, you bring a girl flowers and you were nervous? Why?" She enjoyed this; he finally revealed something of himself to her.
" I had never been on stage before. I do presentations and business deals; it is very different than a stage with everyone looking at you. I also remembered our last conversation." William had hoped she wouldn't remember how short he had been with her that day.
"Let me think, the one where I wasn't doing my job right or the one in the elevator?" Lizzy waited for his answer, this was the first time he had mentioned it to her.
"I know, I know. It wasn't meant as a insult to you, I think I was caught up in the moment."
"Really? You could have fooled me. William, I really thought it was an insult."
"I didn't mean it to be, really, Lizzy," his eyes pleaded with her. Lizzy knew he got her point.
Bill Collins came running up, "She is here, Come everyone, especially you Mr. Darcy. I need you to greet Mrs. DeBourgh." William rolled his eyes to Lizzy.
"Come and meet my aunt." William took her hand and pulled Lizzy toward him, and he caressed her head with hand. He was strong yet gentle with her, as he spoke in her ear. "No matter what Lizzy, I am not here for her, I am here with you and for you. I want to apologize right now for my aunt if she is rude, I am here because of you." He knew it had to be said before she met his aunt. He watched her eyes for a reaction.
Lizzy squeezed his hand and was about to ask a question when Mrs. DeBourgh entered. Bill Collins started clapping like a mad man, and the rest of the patrons calmly and slowly clapped. A young man followed her.
"Hey William, so glad to see you." He shook William's hand and turned toward Lizzy. "You must be Elizabeth Bennet."
Lizzy was stunned. She had no idea who this man was, and yet he knew her full name. She looked at William and he blushed, coughed and covered his mouth.
"Lizzy let me introduce you to Richard, he is my cousin." William was still blushing. How could he say her name, I sound so silly.
"Glad to meet you, Richard." Lizzy shook his hand, Richard was immediately friendly, and no warm up was required. He was the opposite of William; he was congenial and charming at all times. He was shorter than William and had dark blonde hair with soft curls on top. His grin was Texas size, he lit up the room with his smile.
"Well, I feel like I know you already." Richard smiled and William coughed again Why doesn't he get the hint, stop talking Richard. Richard knew William was uncomfortable, which is why he was doing it, he had loved to tease him since they were boys.
"Richard, aside from being my cousin, is my closest friend - other than Charles, of course." Lizzy smiled, looking at William so uncomfortable and coughing. William had talked about her - that was news to her.
"Richard, you must let me know, what has he said?" Lizzy looked over at William, he was squirming.
William saw a big problem; Richard loved to tell all and Lizzy had asked. What he thought of her was that she was perfect.
"I can assure you Lizzy, he hasn't said a ill word about you, I feel like I know you as a matter of fact. You work and act do you not?" Richard asked, trying to pave a way out of the hot seat for Darcy.
"Well yes, I do." Lizzy found Richard far more revealing about William than William. She knew he hated it, but this was her first taste of information.
“Yes, I told Richard I met you at the clinic where my sister was. He knows all about her treatment.” He would never hide it from Richard, but Lady C was another story.
“So you met him there. I trust you enjoy your work.” Richard smiled, he was so charming.
“Oh very much, I am fortunate to work where people are respected and treated well.” Lizzy was fortunate, she was well compensated too.
“Yes, she is treated well by most. I am afraid I did not behave well on our first meeting.” William looked at Lizzy, he could admit he was wrong.
"Now that is interesting! So Darce, you gave sweet Lizzy a hard time did you?" Richard looked at Darcy, he knew he regretted it but he had to get Darcy to open up to Lizzy.
William fidgeted with his glass. He hated this conversation. This is why he was nervous - Lizzy and Richard. Richard loved to tell everything, he sounded like a saint and William was making no brownie points.
"I didn't understand her job, that is all. No, she is wonderful at work and I was in a hurry." William had a sinking feeling his words fell on deaf ears.
Richard and Lizzy looked at each other and laughed. William never looked so out of sort.
“Lizzy, Darce said you did Kate. I would have enjoyed seeing you in The Taming Of The Shrew. I travel often so I must have been out of town for it. He said you were fantastic.” Lizzy blushed; William had spoken of her acting as well. He seemed to have talked more about her to Richard than he had talked with her.
She enjoyed his company; his mind was witty and sharp. They were contrasts of the same family.
Mrs. DeBourgh had been fawned over by the crowd and was enjoying it immensely until she realized Richard and William were nowhere to be seen. She excused herself from the crowd and went in search for Richard and William. Mrs. DeBourgh expected them to stay beside her, how could she show them off when they were gone? This night had surprised her, not one but both had vanished. She was five feet away when she saw them. They were talking to a woman, and she was most displeased. The woman was not a patron, she was sure of it.
She marched up to the trio. "William and Richard, you must meet the other patrons." She spoke with authoritative tone.
William decided to take the opportunity. "Aunt Catherine, may I introduce Elizabeth Bennet, she is an actress here." William hoped she would be polite, although it would be out of character for her to be so.
"So, you are an actress, what have you done?" She looked hard at Lizzy, almost like she was doing a personal inspection of her.
"Well this season, I did Boyfriend, Pippin and Taming of the Shrew." Lizzy smiled, she was not accustomed to her rudeness but endured it since she had been forewarned. Mrs. DeBourgh enjoyed being the patron above all.
"Oh, I see. William, Richard follow me." Mrs. DeBourgh turned quickly and stepped towards the front of the lobby. William grabbed Lizzy's hand; he started to take her with him.
Lizzy pulled him to the side. "William I have to go, I will see you later." William was lost.
"Wait Lizzy, when?" He wanted to follow Lizzy but she hadn't invited him and he had to go with his aunt or else.
"Go please your aunt. Later, William." She turned around and walked the opposite direction to a waiting, handsome man. She hugged him and they left arm in arm, smiling. William stood still in his tracks. Who was that guy?
His aunt called, "William please, people are waiting to meet you." Richard laughed. William looked like a kid who couldn't dump his parents when the cheerleaders were around. Richard was glad he had not brought a date, too much of a bother with Aunt Catherine near by.
Richard looked up and saw William glaring at him, he knew William wanted to hit him, but he just grinned bigger. "It will be okay, Darce. She will be back at your side before you know it."
People were mingling and chatting, all William could do was watch for Lizzy's return. The chatter was boring and this night was about him and Lizzy. He kept his eyes roving the lobby. Where the hell is she?
Richard also grew bored with the chitchat, neither one wanted to be with their aunt. At one point, out of sheer boredom, Richard said, "There's Lizzy! Ha, made you look."
"That is not even funny, Richard," William said, as he kept one eye open for her. He hated fundraisers for this reason. He didn't mind writing a check, but the small talk nearly killed him. He was only there because of her and she was nowhere to be found. He knew he needed to contribute this year. In the past years he had given twenty thousand. This year he had decided to give more, as he could see it was important to Lizzy. He had a check in his pocket for ninety thousand, as he had already called and found his aunt gave one hundred thousand, so she would not be slighted. He looked around once more for Lizzy. He saw Bill Collins and handed him the check.
"Here, Bill if you would be so kind as to handle this, I would appreciate it." Bill looked at the check and motioned to the Managing Director.
"Thank you, Mr. Darcy, you have always been a loyal patron, we will not forget your gratitude," John said as he looked at the check.
"Really, it's not necessary. I enjoy contributing." William was uncomfortable being complimented on sharing his wealth. He had hoped to discreetly give it to Bill, end of story. His parents had taught him to share his good fortune.
********************
John opened up the theatre doors and called out, “Everyone please come in the theatre, we have arranged a treat for you." William looked around. Lizzy was nowhere to be seen; he wanted her beside him, not Richard.
When inside, John stepped on stage to the microphone and continued, "Tonight, some of our best actors and actresses have chosen to perform for you. So please enjoy their talent."
A big handsome man came out. He was soft spoken at first, and he began singing "Old Man River." He had a beautiful voice and the theatre was filled with the richness of his voice. He finished and applause echoed everywhere.
Next came another man, this was the man who had been on Lizzy's arm. He was handsome, too. William stared, he vaguely remembered his face now, and this was the guy that was in The Taming of the Shrew with Lizzy. He sang Music of the Night from Phantom of the Opera. That is the guy that kissed Lizzy again and again. He remembered watching them kiss, he had longed to have her lips on his.
Dan finished and took a bow, his performance was smooth, he sang his heart out and the audience loved him.
“Thank you, now it is my pleasure to introduce the lady that makes my job so much easier. She has become my favorite leading lady. I am sure you all know her. Ladies and gentlemen, please allow me to introduce Elizabeth Bennet.”
Lizzy stepped out from behind the curtain. Dan hugged and kissed her. It was clear to all; they had chemistry and respect for each. Lizzy squeezed Dan's hand, and smiled at the audience. She took in a deep breath, and focused in the moment. This was the place she felt the most comfortable. Once she was on stage, she reveled in it, to her it was enjoyable and easy, and performing gave her life. All her life, people were surprised how composed she was on stage. Drawing an audience in was a joy to her. Her stage presence was amazing.
Lizzy stepped up to the microphone, and started singing "Can't Help Lovin' That Man" from Showboat.
Fish got to swim and birds got to fly,
I got to love one man till I die,
Can't help lovin' that man of mine.
Tell me he's lazy, tell me he's slow,
Tell me I `m crazy, maybe I know,
Can't help lovin' that man of mine.
When he goes away,
That's a rainy day,
And when he comes back that day is fine,
The sun will shine.
He can come as late as can be,
Home without him ain't no home to me
Can't help lovin' that man of mine.
Her voice was strong and steady. William sat in shock, he gasped out loud. Richard patted Darcy's chest so he would breathe again. Every time she sang "Can't Help Lovin' That Man", he tried to remain calm, but inside he was in awe of her. How did she do so many things? She must have had training, she was more than he could have ever expected. Each time he saw her, he saw another side of her.
William, unaware of anyone else, clapped like a fool. Richard laughed out loud Darce was smitten. He wasn't sure about Lizzy, but William was a fool in love. William watched her with surprise, and he had no idea of her singing abilities.
Lizzy came to the end of her song and finished with gusto. She finished and with her bow, she smiled at William.
More people sang, then there was applause and curtain calls.
William got up to find Lizzy. He had tunnel vision; there was only one person he had to see. He moved with his usual deliberate walk, she was his tonight and he had waited long enough. He wasn't clear who the handsome man was who Lizzy stood next to, but for the first time in his life, he was jealous of another man. Before he had no reason to doubt his attractiveness, now he felt like the ugly duckling at the Swan Ball. Couldn't Lizzy see how much she meant to him? His fixed his steadfast gaze on her.
"Lizzy, wonderful singing, I didn't know you sang." He relaxed once he was near her. She had not left him, she was busy was all.
"Thank you, there is so much you still don't know." Lizzy gently rubbed his arm; she wanted to touch him.
She smiled and turned to Dan and hugged him. "Thanks Dan, it was fun, this is William Darcy."
"Oh William glad to meet you, excuse me I need to find my better half." Dan was friendly and married, William was reassured.
"Dan, tell Donna I said hi, I will see you later." Lizzy hugged and kissed Dan goodbye, and started to take William's arm.
"Lizzy, I have been lost without you. I didn't know where you went." William was happy she was on his arm.
"That is the point, I have obligations same as you. I told you I was going to be here anyway. I guess you could say my business obligations are not unlike yours." Lizzy was surprised by his attention.
"I know you have obligations, mine seem to be easier, I just write a check." William seemed sad, was she too busy to notice him?
"William, the actors are grateful to the patrons, you give us the money to do what we love. Consider yourself the giver of dreams; acting to me is a labor of love. It can be hard work, but so rewarding. I am glad you came tonight, at least you got a taste how your money is spent." Lizzy was glad he was there, she thought about the fact this was the last time she would see him.
Suddenly she seemed vulnerable. William knew he needed to say goodnight to Aunt Catherine and Richard. He wanted to spend a night talking to Lizzy.
William took Lizzy's hand and led her to Richard and Aunt Catherine.
"Miss Bennet, your song was fine. William, good to see you. I thought you would never come to this fundraiser." Mrs. DeBourgh looked at her hand in William's and inspected it with her glasses. Mrs. DeBourgh scowled at the sight of her beloved nephew with a common actress; she had no standing in society or a debut. She wrinkled her nose and sighed out loud.
"Night, Aunt", William spoke as he held Lizzy's hand, as if in defiance of her, she would not be hurt by a woman who had shown such ignorance.
"Lizzy that was spectacular, so glad we finally met." Richard said as he kissed her hand.
"Richard, you are so kind, I hope to see you at a play soon." Lizzy had a fondness of Richard. She hugged him without thinking about it.
"Goodnight Richard," William said as he watched them, Richard chuckled. Lizzy was his date; she had hugged two men and not him, not that he was counting.
"You ready to go, Lizzy?" He said as he grabbed her hand again, in his mind this was a date, regardless of the rule.
"William I need to go, maybe we will run into each other sometime. Maybe the next play I do here." Lizzy hated her lame excuse, she knew if she saw him it would only be fleeting.
"Lizzy, I thought we could talk for awhile, after all we are in a public parking lot. Charles told me there is a lovely fountain over there." William knew this moment would come too quickly but he wanted to prolong her departure. Seeing her onstage without touching her, seemed a poor substitute. He had no idea what to say to convince her to stay.
"Giver of dreams, that is me. Lizzy, I know we have discussed it before, but is there any chance of bypassing that rule at work?" He smiled and hoped for a response that would please him.
"Sorry, I have spoken to Dr. Lucas about this, and he said I had to separate my business and personal lives. I am calling this a business life tonight. There is just nothing I can do William. One day I hope you can realize what I need, not what I desire. There is a big difference." She looked at William; Ruby had given her good advice. She was enjoying her last night with him, it seemed cruel to stop seeing him.
Lizzy looked down at her hand, it was still inside his. Ever since he first touched her, it seemed like she wanted to touch and be touched by him. She felt her resistance melting.
"I know, I know." He hung his head; he only wanted to be near her. He looked like he had lost his favorite teddy bear. Lizzy couldn't take it.
"William, I know it seems like I am being mean on purpose, but I am not. If your sister weren't a client, I would enjoy dating you. Does that help?"
"I know it should, but right now I want only one thing, it seems unreal."
"I'm sorry William, I should go home." She started towards her car; William let go of her hand. He stood still watching her every move; he wanted to remember her and waited for her to turn toward him one last time. He couldn't wait.
"Lizzy wait!" He ran up to the car.
"What?" She had rolled down the window.
"I need to follow you home."
"William there is something unhealthy about making sure I am safe." She was tired of that part of him.
"I know but this is the last time, I promise." William said.
"Okay, here is the deal. You can follow me if when you get there you will answer my question. Any question I want to ask. Is that a deal?" Lizzy waited surely he wouldn't agree, he was too private. She could ask anything.
"Anything you want to know if you will just let me follow you. It's a deal." William grinned, he had more time.
"Okay shake on it, I mean it, you have to answer it." Lizzy looked at him sternly, he had no clue.
"Lizzy, I am not scared of your questions." William said out loud. He was sure she was bluffing.
William got in his Jag, and followed her every move, he still wanted to change her route but he followed it anyway.
Lizzy was confident as they drove, William would hate the question, the only things she knew about him were his company, Darcy and Associates, and that he had family and a checkbook. The rest was a mystery, except the football.
William drove and called Georgiana, he needed to make sure she was safe too.
"Georg, it's me William. Where are you?"
"William I told you, Tina's. I am ok. Have fun!"
"I sort of need advice quick. Like, if you could ask a guy any question what would it be?"
"Oh that is easy, I would ask him about his sex life, if I were interested at least. Wait is Miss No Name going to ask you a question?"
"Uh maybe, never mind. The traffic is awful. I will be home later if you need me. I have to go Georgiana, I love you."
"Love you too William, good luck." Georgiana was laughing hysterically, he was a sucker and he knew it. Damn.
He had no skeletons in his closet, he shouldn't worry. He could handle Lizzy and her question. Georgina's laugh did haunt him though.
They parked at Lizzy's apartment.
"William here is my question." Lizzy started to ask him but he interrupted her.
"I need to walk you to your door first." William followed her up the staircase. Stall her.
"Hey, you will answer my question Mr. Darcy?" Lizzy said as she tapped up the stairs. She loved the sound of heels on concrete.
William was enjoying the view of her back slit and the heels, he wanted to go inside but he was too worried about the question at the moment. Lizzy took her key out and unlocked her door but didn't open it.
"Okay, William Darcy, now answer me this and I want the real reason, not a made-up one. Why do you feel the need to make sure I am safe at all times? Like I said before I grew up in Dallas, I have driven all over it since I was sixteen. I know this town. Jane and I live here because we are close to each other and we have alarm systems. What would drive a logical man to follow me way across town when I am sure you live close to Theatre D? What? What? I want to know.”
William had his keys in his hands; he looked at them and took a breath. Sex would have been an easier question. Lizzy noticed his change, he seemed lost and alone. She hadn't meant to push him so hard, but he was acting irrational and she had to know why. He looked at the peephole in her door and then finally into her eyes.
“Lizzy, can I have a drink a water? Could I answer this inside, I …” He was biting his lip, he was quiet and withdrawn.
" I ... need to tell you something."
Lizzy stopped him. "Wait, William just a second." She opened the door, pushed the code number of her alarm and took his hand. She stopped by the door kicked off her shoes with a good flick. She brought him to her sofa.
"Here, let me help you with your coat." Lizzy said as she carefully took his coat sleeve and slid off his jacket. Gingerly she took his bow tie and untied it, and undid his top button. William was numb, unsure what to do. His mind was trying to form words, how could he express to her what was wrong? She sat him on the sofa.
"There, that's better." . She went and got him a glass of water.
"Now, take a drink. Are you comfortable now?" William had sat in silence, not watching her, just pondering how he was going to tell her. She sat down next to him on the sofa and tenderly placed her hand on his thigh.
She felt awful; she shouldn't have been so insulting. She couldn't figure out what was wrong, only that she had made him sad beyond her dreams. He was completely quiet for a moment. He looked up his eyes were misty.
"I am sorry I asked you. You don't have to answer it, William." Lizzy watched him for a reaction. She didn't mean to hurt him.
"No, Lizzy I need to tell you this. I just don't how to say it, I have wanted to tell you for some time."
"Take your time, it is okay." Lizzy could see his pain with every word, how could she rush a man in such a state?
"I was about to start my business. My life had been so easy, I never realized how good I had it." William sucked in air, trying to push himself to open up. She had to know, he had to do it. He turned to face her but did not look in her eyes, he took Lizzy's hair and picked it up and let it fall on the back of her neck, over and over again. He felt somehow touching her while he talked made it easier. He felt her silk strands, and watched her wavy hair fall gently.
"William, I am putting you in such pain." She saw him as a fragile piece of china; she wanted him to be out of this mood.
"I want to tell you, it's just that I don't speak about it. I will get through this if only for her. My parents were killed in a plane crash." William had done it finally, the pain eased. Somehow to speak the word of their death made it more real every time. It was like them dying all over again. He had done it for Lizzy, not realizing how much it had helped him. He continued to play with her hair not noticing what he was doing. He was a raw nerve exposed; her hair had a soothing effect.
" William, please forgive me, I should have never asked that question." Lizzy felt she had opened up his wound and poured salt in it. Lizzy had realized he was touching her hair, how could she deny him any comfort? She had created this mess, and he needed to get through it.
"No Lizzy, I wanted to tell you. It is just hard to talk about it, and even harder to do it without falling apart. I know I am overprotective of Georgiana, at least that is what Dr. Lucas and his associates keep telling me. When I lost both of them at the same time it made me overprotect what I do have, which is Georgiana."
"I just wanted to understand you better. I had no idea the question would hurt you. It must have been hard to take on Georgiana at such a young age." Lizzy watched him touch her, she wanted to say something that would ease his pain, and no words would help.
"Georgiana kept me alive then, I needed to be needed. She is the reason I went on to make a life for both of us. When I started getting to know you, I started worrying about you. It is not rational and I know it, but I have to know you are safe." William continued to touch Lizzy's hair; he couldn't look into her eyes. Somehow he had to hide his pain, looking at her would break him open.
"She is lucky to have you William." She watched him as he struggled to tell her about himself.
"There is something else you don't know. I don't normally follow any woman home or call to see if she is ok. I wanted to date you and that hasn't changed." William was so open and vulnerable. He felt like a boulder was lifted off his shoulders. Somehow telling Lizzy was better than telling any Doctor. He felt free for the first time in years. Lizzy watched him, he had told her his darkest secret. She knew two things she had admiration for him, as a man and she needed to hug him. She put her fingers up on his forehead and stroked his wavel; he had never been more handsome. Red eyes and all, he was an Adonis; he cared for her enough to act irrational. She took her hands and cupped his face and as she looked into his eyes she saw a tear fall. She kissed it away. She took him in her arms and held him safely as he was calmed. He needed her and she wanted him.
"You are forgiven for being overprotective...." She started to say something but forgot what it was; the feeling of William so close was overwhelming. He was open and loving.
When William had looked into her eyes and lost himself. What he felt was that she cared for him. This was heaven on earth; he was in her arms and didn't want to leave. This night he had never dreamed he would be relieved to share such agony. Lizzy had made an environment for him to feel safe. He had never felt more safe or wanted. He was finally free of his demons, she had helped when no one else could. How can I ever forget or leave her? He had sworn to himself he would not make love to her on the spur of the moment. It would be a special night and event, but she was so close, her low cut dress and her caring was more than he could stand. He wanted to be with her now more than ever.
“Lizzy, what have you done to me?” He looked into her eyes and kissed her with the passion he had pent up for years. He was free and she wanted him. His lips parted her slightly; he wanted to be inside of her.
Lizzy was beyond words, his look made her know no words were needed. Their kiss deepened, Lizzy was lost in his touch of her. His tongue danced in her mouth, she could hardly breathe. The touch of his tongue ignited a fire in her.
He pulled back her hair with his hand and kissed her neck. She moaned. He felt her hand around his head she pulled him tighter towards her, he began to shift his weight and laid down on top of her. She enveloped him with her delicate hands around his strong shoulders; she wanted him closer and deeper. He gazed at the curve of her shoulder, off shoulder dresses were made for her, her curves were voluptuous and he gingerly kissed his way from her neck to her shoulder. She tasted wonderful. She felt her wetness spread. The more of her he kissed the more he wanted to kiss. She responded to him each time with bringing him closer. He wasn't going everywhere. He took his right hand and put it on to her waist, and waited for her to react.
“William, oh Will, I …” she said as she stroked his hair and started to kiss his cheek.
He moved his mouth down slowly towards his reward; she breathed heavy waiting in anticipation, as he tasted her décolletage. As he touched her, she came alive. William had awoken in her what was dormant for years, physical desire. She was no virgin, but it had been a long time since someone had touched her like William. She was awakening to him; she was beginning to whimper. She was wet to the touch.
“Lizzy” he began to take his hand from her waist down her satin dress towards the hem of her dress; he had to feel her skin. He moved his hand up the stocking ever so slowly as she arched her back, until he touched the top of the thigh. He began to touch her skin on her thigh. She arched again, her body stiffened. Her breasts were hardened; he could feel the heat off her body. She was moaning for his touch. She could feel his hardness between her legs, she ached for him. He moved his right hand down her stockings, up the outside of her dress. His hand tenderly moved to her breasts and ran his hand over her nipples through her dress. He stroked her nipples with his thumb to maintain the hardness he craved. She was more sensual than he dreamed of. Her breathing was labored; he loved watching her react to his touch. It sent his already clouded mind soaring.
“William…” She began to run her fingers through his hair, separating each strand, slowly stroking his wavy hair. He had thick beautiful hair and it was so soft.
He began kissing her lips again, as he stroked her breasts; his right hand moved and started to pull her up to a sitting position. He slowly ran his left hand over her shoulders and went around back to her zipper. With every ounce of manhood; he wanted to see the full beauty of her breasts. He knew this vision would send him over the edge, but he couldn't help himself.
He began to unzip her dress she sighed out loud. She watched as William anticipated her beauty. He starred without blinking not wanting to miss a moment of ecstasy. Carefully he tugged on her dress, she starred at his eyes. He unknowingly focused on her breasts as she watched him. His touch had sent chills down her spine. She was losing herself to him; reason was going out the window.
Finally the dress fell to her waist, he undid her black satin bra, his visual prize was so close, and if he could see her breasts he could breathe. Minutes had slowed to both of them; she longed to see his reaction. He desired her so. Finally her full rounded breasts were free.
“Oh God, you are more beautiful than I imagined.”
Lizzy wasn't sure what to say, his eyes were only on her. He licked his lips and she longed for his lips on her breasts. She wanted him to fully taste her.
She had to stop this before she lost it. She had meant it when she told Ruby she had no intention of sex, the moment when he began to kiss her had altered her, she now craved for his touch. She didn't know about him, but a few more inches and she would rip his designer tuxedo to shreds. Her threshold was low and she knew if he touched her breasts, William would be naked and hers in a heartbeat. She had two choices, let it happen or stop it. Most of her wanted it to happen, but she knew if they slept together she might not ever get over him. He was too good and gentle.
“William, I can't do this. Please don't touch me. I can't do this.” Her voice was weak but her message clear, she was begging. The meek Lizzy was so fragile.
“Lizzy, you are so beautiful, you have no idea what you do to me.” He pulled back from her; he couldn't compromise their relationship.
He was still trying to gain control of his body. The one thing he wanted was not for Lizzy to feel used. This felt like tomorrow she would regret it.
“Knowing you want me makes me feel special." Lizzy pulled up her dress and zipped the back, the bra seemed pointless at this moment.
"Lizzy you are special to me, sex or no sex don't ever doubt that." William said as he brushed her cheek with the back of his hand, he loved her skin.
Lizzy was embarrassed by William's words; she didn't consider herself special at all. She had spent her life trying to become special.
"Lizzy, I didn't mean to get so carried away.” He ran his hands through his hair and looked away.
“I am fine, you did nothing I didn't want you to. I just know that if you go any farther I won't be able to resist you. I am not ready to jeopardize my job for you.” Lizzy starred at him, he was so frustrated and yet she wanted to kiss him again.
“Lizzy I will never be the same after tonight, your job can go to hell. The only thing I care about is you. If you want to stop I will. That decision is because I respect you not your job.” William took her hand and looked into her eyes, he would remember the glow of her glistening skin.
“William, I know my job means nothing to you, but it is all I have right now. I do think it is best we stop here, I don't enjoy the feeling of regret, no matter how good it feels to be near you.” Lizzy bit her bottom lip, he was still so scrumptious.
“I feel this connection to you now and I can't explain what you have done for me. Please Lizzy call me Will. No one calls me Will, and I want you to, I want to hear you say it.” He watched her, he cared for her so.
“You want me to call you Will? Would that mean so much?” He smiled at the thought of her saying Will.
“Yes it would, I feel this connection to you and I like hearing you say it.”
“If I am calling you Will, you may call me Beth.” She smiled; there was so much about him so liked.
“Does anyone else call you that? I want my own name for you.” William felt so attached to her now.
“No one has ever called me Beth. Don't worry, my father calls me Lizzy.”
“Please Beth, don't make me go.” He took her hand, she melted. She leaned back against his chest, he was a perfect fit.
He snuggled her up in his arms, he could stay this way all night if she would let him. He felt her breathe, he silently watched her cleavage move, hoping she wouldn't notice how much he wanted her.
Lizzy could feel his warm breath on the back of her neck. He was the most tempting man she had been near in a long time. She still felt his hardness, she knew she was wet and the condom was still calling her name in a taunting manner. Shut up, she thought to the condom.
William had decided he would try not to react to her cleavage so apparent from his angle; he would not react to her smell or the softness of her hair. She was intoxicating; he no longer knew what was happening to him. He wanted her and yet she had said no. He couldn't bring himself to leave and yet holding her like this made it impossible to not desire her.
"I think it really is late, I should go, before we do something you will regret." William said as he stood and put back on his tux jacket. He felt the blood rush back to his head. He was sane again. Unfulfilled, but sane.
"Yeah I know, it was a wonderful evening. A night to remember, with the giver of dreams." Lizzy smiled as she said the words. She wanted to remember his face, she wanted to etch it into her memory. She brushed his wave on his forehead once more and he took her hand and kissed the inside of her wrist. He took her hand and she wrapped herself around him. She needed to know he was okay, she had caused him pain, there was so much left unsaid. How am I going to forget this man? She snuggled into his chest, she still fit perfectly, this night was beyond any dream she had.
"Somehow, leaving you tonight is so much harder than I ever thought it could be. I respect you Lizzy, but I will not give up until we are together." He took her chin and held it carefully still and smothered her lips with feather kisses. He could not fathom never seeing her again.
"I know, and somehow it is supposed to make it easier. I will miss you, William."
"Goodnight, Lizzy," he said.
Monday morning, two dozen red roses arrived with a note saying, “I will always admire you. Your Secret Admirer.”
