1. Inspect the drive belt for wear, cracks, and other apparent damage.
2. Apply a force of 22 lb (98 N·m) to the mid-protion (between the pulleys) of the drive belt.
3. Check deflection of the belt.
Deflection - old belt : .35 - .43 (9-11 mm) Deflection - new belt : .31 - .39 in(8-10 mm)
INSPECTION
STEERING WHEEL PLAY CHECK
1. Place the front wheels in the straight-ahead position.
2. Turn the steering wheel left until resistance is felt. Make note of the position of the steering wheel.
3. Turn the steering wheel right until resistance is felt. Note the position of the steering wheel.
4. Measure the total movement of the steering wheel at the outer rim.
Play : 0.20 - 1.20 inch (5 - 30 mm)
STEERING WHEEL FORCE CHECK 1. With the vehicle on a hard level surface, place the front wheels in the straight-ahead position.
2. Start the engine and let run at idle speed.
Do not hold the steering wheel full-left or full-right(against the stops) for more than 15 seconds. Prolonged operatiion in this condition is harmful to the power steering pump.
3. Turn the steering wheel full-left and full-right several times to warm the power steering fluid.
4. Attach a pull scale to the outer end of the of the steering wheel spoke.
5. Pull the spring scale to rotate the wheel. The pull must be applied to the steering wheel in a direction perpendicular to the radius the steering wheel. If force is not applied correctly, the spring scale will show a higher force than that actually required turn the steering wheel.
6. Record the force required to rotate the steering wheel.
Required force : Less than 7.4 lb (33N)
STEERING WHEEL LOOSENESS CHECK 1. Hold steering wheel by the rim at two sides and attempt to move the steering wheel axially (in and out), and at right angles to the axis.
2. Check for movement of the steering wheel, and for noises from the steering column and intermediate shaft joints.
3. There should be no perceptible movement of the steering wheel, nor noises indication looseness.
FLUID LEVEL CHECK 1. Unscrew cap of reserve tank.
2. Check that fluid level is between marks "H" and "L" on dipstick.
Use Dexron(R) Ⅱ-E ATF or M-Ⅲ fluid only. Other types of fluid can affect the seals and hoses, resulting in leaks and possible failure of the power steering system.
3. Add fluid as required to bring fluid level to above "L," but not above "H" on the dipstick.
4. Install cap on reserve tank.
BLEEDING This procedure is normally performed when there is evidence of air in the power steering system (as indicated by a foamyappearanec of the power steering fluid), and always after power steering equipment has been disconnted. 1. Raise and support the front of the vehicle.
2. Check the fluid level of the power steeirng at the reserve tank.
3. With the engine off, turn the steering wheel full-right and ful-left several times.
4. Check the fluid level again. If fluid level is lower, add fluid as required.
5. Repeat steps 3 and 4 until fluid reaches and remains at the proper level.
6. Start the engine and let run at idle speed.
Do not gold the steering wheel full-left of full-right (against the stops) for longer than 15 secibds, Prolonged operation in this condition is harmful to the power steering pump.
7. Turn the steering wheel full-left and full-right several times.
8. Check the power steeirng fluid a the reserve tank. There should be no foam in the fluid. If there is foam in the power steering fluid, stop the engine and let the system set for approxiamately five minutes, then repeat steps 2 through 8.
FLUID LEAKS CHECK 1. With the engine off, check the complete power steering system (all parts where power steering fluid is present) for evidence of leakage.Clean all parts as necessary so that leakage can be visually detected.
2. Start the engine and let run at idle speed.
Do not hold the steering wheel full-left or full-right (against the stops) for longer than 15 seconds. Prolonged operation in this condition is harmful to the power steering pump.
3. Turn the steering wheel full-left and full-right several times.
4. Check all power steering parts for leaks, giving particular attention to hoses, all connections, and to shafts of steering gear and power steering pump.
5. Turn off engine.
SYSTEM PRESSURE TEST
Cap or plug disconnected fluid lines to prevent entry of foreign matter. Contamination of power steering fluid can result in damage to the power steering pump and steering gear.
1. Conncet the power steering analyzer as shown : pressure gage side to the ouplet (pressure port) of the power steering pump, and valve side to the inlet (pressure port) of the steering gear.
Thghten to 25 lb-ft (34 N·m)
2. Open valve of power steering analyzer to full-open.
3. Start engine.
Do not hold the steering wheel full-left or full-right for longer than 15 seconds. Prolonged operation in this position is harmful to the power steering pump.
4. With engine at idle speed, turn the steering wheel full-left and full-right several times to warm the power steering fluid.
Temperature : 131°F (55°C)
5. Increase engine speed from 1,000 to 1,500 rpm. then check pressure gage indication.
Pressure : 995 ±14 psi (6860 ± 97 kPa)
Do not close the valve for more the 15 seconds. When the valve is closed, power steering fluid temperature increases rapidly. High fluid temperature is harmful to the power steering pump and to the fluid.
6. Close the valve of the power steering analyzer.
7. With engine speed at 1,000 to 1,500 rpm, check pressure gage indication.
Pressure : 995 ±14 psi (6 860 ± 97kPa)
8. Open vlave of power steering analyzer to full-open.
Do not hold the steering wheel full-left or full-right (against the stops) for longer than 15 seconds. Prolonged operation in this position is harmful to the power steering pump.
9. With engine speed at 1,000 to 1,500 rpm, turn the steering wheel full-left, then full right. Check the pressure gage indication at each extreme of steering wheel movement.
Pressure : 995 ± 14 psi (6 860 ± 97 kPa)
10. Turn engine off.
11. Remove the power steering analyzer.
12. Connect the power steering fluid lines (as disconnected in step 1) to the power steering pump and the steering gear.
Tighten to 29 lb-ft (39 N·m).
13. Bleed air from the power steering system. Refer to "Bleeding" in this section
ADJUSTMENT
1. Loosen lock nut. Refer to "Power Steering Pump" in this section.
2. Rotate power steering pump as required to obtain proper tension of drive belt.
3. Tighten lock bolt.
Tighten lock bolt ot 30 lb-ft (40 N·m).
