Lecture Medieval drama Everyman
6, Class Elizabethan poetry (Wyatt, Surrey, Spenser, Sidney). Shakespeare's sonnets.
7. Lecture Elizabethan drama. Shakespeare (comedies, romances, histories)
8. Class Shakespeare's tragedies. Romeo and Juliet
Class Metaphysical poets. John Donne “The Sun Rising”, “The Flea”, “A Valediction: Forbidding Mourning”. George Herbert “The Collar”, “Easter Wings”. Andrew Marvell “To His Coy Mistress”. Robert Herrick “To the Virgins, to Make Much of Time”.
Course requirements:
1. You are not required to read the listed texts before the lectures but you are required to know them for the exam (to the extent they were discussed during the lecture). You are required to read the assigned texts BEFORE the class and, in case of poetry classes, bring the texts to the class.
2. Most of the assigned poems are available in The Norton Anthology of English Literature which is the obligatory handbook. While all the poems are easily available on the Internet, they are usually plain vanilla versions without footnotes, without which you may find many of them incomprehensible.
3. The assigned texts are accompanied by study guides which will be published on my website. Read the study guides together with the assigned texts and spend a moment thinking about the possible answers.
