Tegla Laroupe was born to run. Every day from the age of seven she ran to school and back, a distance of ten kilometres each way.She ran because she didn't want to arrive late, but she also ran because she liked running. She wanted to become a professional runner. Her country, Kenya, had produced lots of great runners, like the 1968 Olympic Gold medal winner, Kip Keino. But they were all men. Tegla wanted to become the first Kenyan woman to win a major competition. But her father, a farmer in the Rift Valley, wanted her to study. And the men in her village told her she was wasting her time. They didn't want her to do sports. They thought women should stay at home and look after a family. But when she was 18 Tegla got her chance. She moved to Germany and began training.
In 1994 she ran her first marathon in New York - and won. She won the same raceagain the next year. In 1998 in Rotterdam
she became the fastest woman marathon runner in the world with a time of 2:20:47. The next year she broke her own record by
four seconds and in the year 2000 she won the London Marathon.
Tegla has made a lot of money from her success, and her family are now the richest people in her village. But Tegla hasn't gone
home yet. She's still running - and she hopes that other African women will start running too.
