EUSTACE MULLINS and the CONSPIRATORIAL EXTREME RIGHT...rev. 2/3/10
UPDATE: Eustace Mullins died Tuesday, February 2, 2010 in Waller County, Texas. He was 86 years old. He suffered a stroke in Columbus, Ohio three weeks ago. This report will be updated and greatly expanded to incorporate considerable new material from FBI documents and files in the near future.
Several years ago, the late political scientist, Dr. John George, co-author with Laird Wilcox of the 1992 book “Nazis, Communists, Klansmen and Others on The Fringe” told me in confidence about a 1966 interview he had with neo-nazi H. Keith Thompson Jr.
Thompson had known Mullins since the 1950's when Thompson recruited Mullins to join Thompson's short-lived group, the American Committee for the Advancement of Western Culture.
Thompson told Dr. George about a conversation he had with Mullins in which Mullins acknowledged that he often concocted fabrications to cause grief to Jews.
An example, according to Mullins, was the fake “speech” which Mullins concocted and attributed to a fake "Rabbi" named Emanuel Rabinovich - allegedly before a special meeting of the Emergency Council of European Rabbis in Budapest, Hungary, January 12, 1952. The fake speech, which is reminiscent of theProtocols of the Elders of Zion forgery, was entitled "Our Race Will Rule Undisputed Over The World " -- and its text may be seen here:
The fake “speech” was picked up and widely reprinted by such anti-semitic organs as Conde McGinley's Common Sense newspaper [see, for example "A Rabbi Speaks: Foretells Gentile Doom", in Common Sense, August 1, 1952, page 1] and the September 1952 “Canadian Intelligence Service” newsletter.
Dr. George asked me to keep the content of his interview with Thompson confidential until Thompson died — which I did. I copy the email I received from Dr. George below:

Lately, numerous Yahoo and Google discussion groups have contained messages concerning recent economic developments and the messages often cite or recommend Eustace Mullins as "an historian" who provides reliable, credible information.
For those readers who are not familiar with Eustace Mullins' background and his associations, I present the following brief summary.
FBI CHARACTERIZATION OF EUSTACE MULLINS
“Mullins has been the subject of an extensive Racial Matters investigation. He is a depraved, warped degenerate and alleged homosexual who is a prolific writer. [portion excised] In previous writings he has been extremely critical of the Director and the FBI and has shown that whatever he offers is obviously the work of a deranged and vicious mind. Since it would be inconceivable that any rational person would consider seriously Mullins' demented allegations and outrageous distortions we have previously considered it unwise to dignify his work with any kind of response.” [J. MULLINS ASSOCIATION WITH
NATIONAL RENAISSANCE PARTY / JAMES MADOLE
In October 1952, Mullins wrote an article for the National Renaissance PartyBulletin entitled "Hitler: An Appreciation" which may be seen as Exhibit 4 (page 27) of the House Committee on Un-American Activities Report entitled: Preliminary Report on Neo-Fascist and Hate Groups - here:

“NRP propaganda contains extensive rehashes of Hitler's speeches. Typical areNational Renaissance Bulletin articles, `Adolf Hitler Explains Nazi Anti-Semitism', appearing in the February 1953 issue, and `Adolf Hitler, the George Washington of Europe', which appeared in the issue of May 1953. NRP's own leaders imitate the Hitler line. Eustace Mullins, who has joined Madole in his street-corner propagandizing, is the contributor of an article entitled `Adolf Hitler: An Appreciation' in the Bulletin of October 1952. John M. The FBI described the NRP as follows:
“The rabidly anti-Semitic, anti-Negro, neo-Nazi National Renaissance Party (NRP), founded in 1949, is one of the oldest white extremist groups in the United States. It is the creation and one-man enterprise of James H. Madole, its National Director. The Nazi ideology of Adolf Hitler has had an enormous influence on Madole and the NRP. Madole has hailed Hitler as `the George Washington of Europe' and called Germany `the gem of Europe' ” [FBI monograph, White Extremist Organizations, part V; FBI HQ file 100-10092, serial #442, July 1970, page ii]
Origins of the National Renaissance Party
“In 1949, Madole launched his NRP, composed mostly of elements from the defunct, anti-Semitic Christian Front and such old pro-Nazi organizations as the German-American Bund, the Citizens Protective League and the Nationalist Action League.” [FBI Monograph, page 1]
The January-February 1972 issue of the NRP Bulletin contained an article entitled "First Racial Government" which identifies the type of individuals they anticipated appealing to and, consequently, why someone with Mullins' political or ideological convictions might be interested in associating himself with them:
"The NRP collaborated with its political allies, the Ku Klux Klan and White Action Movement, in celebrating the birthday of Adolf Hitler, founder of National Socialism and creator of the first historically-recorded government whose policies were based exclusively on RACIAL considerations."

"Information in the possession of the Committee reveals a significant interchangeability of propagandists working for the allegedly patriotic Common Sense and the avowed fascist National Renaissance Party.
A good example is provided by Eustace Mullins, who frankly eulogizes Hitler in the pages of the National Renaissance Party's Bulletin and who has been observed at an NRP street session in New York City last year. Articles written by Mullins have been appearing in Common Sense since at least September 1951 and, last year, he became a writer on the staff of Common Sense."
MULLINS and H. KEITH THOMPSON'S
AMERICAN COMMITTEE FOR ADVANCEMENT OF WESTERN CULTURE
Eustace Mullins served as “Treasurer” of H. Keith Thompson's short-lived American Committee For the Advancement of Western Culture (ACFCWC).
The “Youth Section Leader” of this group was Mullins' frequent associate and roommate, Matt Koehl (more details about Koehl below).
The ACFAWC was created after an April 1953 meeting held at the farm of Frederick C.F. Weiss in Middletown NY.
Some background information about both Weiss and Thompson will give readers an idea about why Mullins would be attracted to both of them as individuals as well as to Thompson's new organization.
Frederick Charles Ferdinand Weiss:
Weiss was born in Germany and after coming to the U.S. he became prosperous as a consequence of real estate investments.
During World War II, Weiss was declared an “enemy alien” and he was held on Ellis Island while he was being investigated. Weiss claimed that he never joined the German-American Bund or the Nazi Party. However, after the war ended, Weiss began publishing anti-semitic pamphlets through his own publishing company, Le Blanc Publishers.
In 1949, Weiss had a role in creating, and he was a major financial contributor to, James Madole's National Renaissance Party.
Harold Keith Thompson Jr.
Thompson was born in Orange NJ on September 17, 1922. In the 1940's he joined the pro-Nazi German-American Bund. In 1946 he graduated from Yale University with a bachelor's degree in history.
From December 1946 thru April 1947, Thompson served as a communications officer aboard the USS Mt. Olympus, the flagship of the Byrd Antarctic Expedition. He then returned to the U.S. and served on temporary duty with Naval Department Bureau of Supplies and Accounts in Washington DC.
He resigned from the U.S. Navy in order to accept commission as a Second Lieutenant in the U.S. Marine Corps. However, in February 1949 he faced a General Court Martial on charges of “scandalous conduct tending to destruction of good morals (sex deviate) and Maltreatment of Person Subject to His Orders.”
After his 1950 dishonorable discharge from the military, Thompson became Vice President and Office Manager of his father's business in New York City. He also became active in the postwar neo-nazi movement.
Aside from his involvement with Madole's National Renaissance Party, Thompson registered in September 1952 as the American publicity agent and fund raiser for the outlawed Socialistic Reich Party of West Germany.
Thompson was a devoted fan of Hitler (and Kaiser Wilhelm II and Prince August Wilhelm of Prussia—the latter who became a Brigadier General in Hitler's SA.)
On September 30, 1954, Thompson sent a letter to J. Edgar Hoover stating:
“I herewith enclose for the records of your organization the following papers: (1) copy of my appointment as American correspondent, accredited to the United Nations, of `Der Weg', Argentine magazine (monthly) published at Buenos Aires in the German language, (2) Copy of the announcement of my appointment…In connection with my journalistic assignment, I anticipate that I shall uncover, from time to time, data concerning the Communist Internationale, its agents, and its links with jewish pressure groups operating in the United States as `charitable' and `defense'organizations. Some of this information, hitherto unpublished, is to be found in my articles appearing in the September and October issues of `Expose'. ” [HQ 100-370871, #13, 9/30/54 Thompson letter to Hoover.]
Note #1: the reference to his “Expose” articles refers to Thompson's 4-part autobiographical series entitled "I Am an American Fascist” which were published in the August, September, October and December 1954 issues.

A 1954 FBI memo observes:
“As you recall, Thompson is a sex deviate who was dismissed from the U.S. Marine Corps by general court martial on June 22, 1950. He has been the subject of a security investigation because of his neo-Nazi activities.” [HQ 100-370871, #15; 10/21/54 memo from F.J. Baumgardner to A.H. Belmont.] Serial #21 of same file states: “In October 1953 he volunteered information that he was a homosexual.” [HQ 100-370871, #21; 10/19/54 Baumgardner to Belmont].
Keith Thompson hoped that his new Committee would become a coordinating group for white racial and nationalist activities of groups around the world.
The above-referenced 1954 House Committee on Un-American Activities report concerning neo-fascist groups, contains this comment on Keith Thompson:
“In the summer of 1953, the NRP announced plans to run a candidate for Congress from the Yorkville district. Nothing further was heard of the scheme, however. The would-be candidate was H. Keith Thompson, Jr., who was identified in the National Renaissance Bulletin as a former registered agent for Maj. Gen. Otto Remer's Socialist Reich Party---a neo-Nazi group in West Germany now banned by the German Government. The NRP had previously publicized Thompson as the national director of a newly formed American Committee for the Advancement of Western Culture. James Madole, Kurt Mertig, Frederick Charles F. Weiss, and other `officers and members' of the NRP also were represented on this committee, which had the grandiose role of serving as`a high policy planning group for the coordination of racial nationalist activities in America, Europe, Africa, and Asia.'”
Among the other assorted bigots and political extremists who attached
themselves to ACFAWC were: John H. Monk, Peter L. Xavier, Kurt Mertig, Benjamin H. Freedman, and Guy C. Stephens.
EUSTACE MULLINS & CONDE MCGINLEY'S NEWSPAPER
COMMON SENSE
Not surprisingly, Mullins became a frequent contributor to Conde McGinley's newspaper, Common Sense.
The House Committee on Un-American Activities described Conde McGinley's "Common Sense" newspaper as "almost exclusively a vehicle for the exploitation of ignorance, prejudice and fear" and as "a clearinghouse for hate propaganda throughout the country."

“Beginning in 1948, however, Common Sense became increasingly outspoken in its statements of a pro-Nazi and anti-Semitic nature. It was soon almost exclusively a vehicle for the exploitation of ignorance, prejudice, and fear. The paper devoted considerable space in 1948 to the support of the late Robert H. Best, American newsman who was convicted of treason and sentenced to life imprisonment in that year as a result of his broadcasts for the Nazis in World War II. A eulogy of Best appearing in Common Sense for December 15, 1952, described him as a `patriot,' `Paul Revere,' and `true Christian American.' “

“Conde McGinley, Sr., has maintained a particularly cooperative relationship with two disseminators of anti-Semitic literature from Chicago: Mrs. Elizabeth Dilling and Mrs. Lyrl Clark Van Hyning.
Mrs. Dilling's writings have been circulating since the 1930's. Mrs. Van Hyning is the head of an organization known as We, The Mothers, Mobilize For America, Inc., and is editor of the publication, Women's Voice…
A number of individuals notorious for their efforts to create a nationwide fascist organization in the United States in the 1930's are also propagandizing again throughCommon Sense. McGinley has printed articles and letters from Gen. George Van Horn Moseley (Ret.), Col. Eugene N. Sanctuary, and Charles B. Hudson. He has advertised for sale a new book by Robert Edward Edmondson. The Special Committee on Un-American Activities reported in 1940 that General Moseley was being seriously considered as a national leader of an attempted union of fascist and hate groups in the United States until the plans were exposed and Moseley was called as a witness before the committee. The special committee named Sanctuary, Hudson, and Edmondson as being among the individuals who took part in this unsuccessful attempt to create a united fascist movement.”
A typical 1962 article in Common Sense is an "expose" entitled: "Zionist Invisible Government Plotting To Establish a World Government Under A Red Dictatorship Led By Asiatic Marxist Jews".
The American Legion's Americanism Commission denounced all of Conde McGinley's enterprises as "hate" inspired bigotry.
A memo in Mullins' FBI file discusses an article he wrote which was published in the 7/1/54 issue of Common Sense, that developed the theme “that the Supreme Court decision outlawing segregation in schools is the culmination of a Communist International directive to the CPUSA to use the Negro racial issue and the issue of civil rights as a method to weaken America. The article indicates that the document to prove this contention was seized by government agents raiding the Bridgeman Michigan Convention of the Communist Party, 8/22/22.”
According to Mullins the document “is in the files of the FBI today but the Director is under strict orders not to reveal (it) at any cost because it would brand the Supreme Court as a front or agent of the Communist International.”
A J. Edgar Hoover memo on this matter to the FBI Detroit field office stated that:“In an effort to locate this document Bureau indices and records of the Department were searched with negative results. The Detroit office is instructed to review its indices in an effort to determine the specific location of the document referred to above.”
A subsequent FBI HQ memo observed that:
“In an effort to locate this document in Bufiles the following sources were checked with negative results: Bureau indices, Identification Division, Obsolete Files and Exhibits which are not indexed; 7th floor, Identification Division Y files of the Publications Unit; publications under the caption of Civil Rights, Negro Rights, Bridgeman Convention. (one word deleted), Propaganda, Racial Issues, etc. Two books written by former Communist Ben Gitlow, were also reviewed relative to the Bridgeman Michigan CP Convention which Gitlow attended. These books merely state that documents at the convention were seized by Government agent. (Name deleted) of the Records section had the Department check its records relative to the documents seized in the Bridgeman CP Convention and the Department advised on September 3, 1954 that it could locate no record of those documents.” [FBI HQ file 62-101087, 9/9/54 memo (no serial #) to F.J. MORE MULLINS' ASSOCIATIONS WITH THE
NEO-NAZI MOVEMENT IN THE U.S. AND THEIR IDEAS
Mullins was co-founder and Chairman of the Free Ezra Pound Committee (FEPC). Ezra Pound made pro-Axis radio broadcasts in Italy during World War II.
The Secretary of the FEPC was Matt Koehl, who later became a key figure within the American Nazi Party as well as the U.S. neo-nazi movement.
Koehl claims that he became a Hitler admirer while in high school. After joining the American Nazi Party (ANP) in 1960, he became head of its Chicago unit. He served as a“Commander” within the ANP and he then became National Secretary in 1963. He succeeded George Lincoln Rockwell as head of the Party after Rockwell was assassinated in August 1967.
Eustace Mullins wrote numerous articles for Lyrl Clark Van Hyning's Chicago-based newsletter, Women's Voice.
Mrs. Van Hyning, a Chicago schoolteacher who taught Latin, was a member of the pro-Nazi German-American Bund (listed as subversive by the Attorney General of the United States). See 1942 Committee on Un-American Activities Report concerning the Bund here:
In February 1941 Mrs. Van Hyning was a co-founder of We, The Mothers Mobilize For America, Inc. and she became its President. The Special Agent in Charge of the FBI Chicago field office (SAC) characterized Van Hyning and her organization as “anti-British, anti-Communist, anti-Semitic” and composed of many members who were “pro-German”. [Chicago FBI file 100-7343, #1; 4/13/42 SAC Chicago to J. Edgar Hoover.]
The FBI described Women's Voice as…
“the official publication of an organization known as We, The Mothers, Mobilize For America, Inc., established in Chicago in 1941…This organization is violently anti-Eisenhower Administration, anti-Semitic, anti-Masonic, anti-Catholic, anticommunist and opposed to all foreign elements in the United States…Eustace Clarence Mullins has contributed articles to Women's Voice. This individual reportedly was discharged from employment with the Library of Congress following World II as a result of acknowledged authorship of racist writings. He has written numerous anti-Semitic articles and also is opposed to the Eisenhower Administration.” [FBI HQ file 105-15727, no serial #; 12/31/56 J. Edgar Hoover memo to the Attorney General.]
The recurring Jew-hatred theme of Mullins' articles in Women's Voice may be seen in: "Jews Mass Poison American Children!" in which he wrote:
“One of the most shocking and sadistic episodes in the history of the world is now being carried out in the United States by Jewish mass poisoners of children! Jonas Salk, Yiddish inventor of a so-called polio vaccine, is directing the inoculation of millions of American children with this sinister concoction of live polio germs. All that is known is that it CAUSES polio in an alarming percentage of children injected with it, while its effectiveness in preventing polio is a myth of Jewish propaganda.”
“As one commentator after another warns over the radio that the Jewish Salk vaccine contains live polio germs which are killing our children, the nation's press refuses to carry these warnings, preferring to see children die rather than criticize the sacred Jew vaccine. Instead, the press prints testimonial after testimonial in FAVOR of the Jew vaccine from the filthy immoral rats in the U.S. Public Health Service in Washington which is nothing but a publicity bureau for Jewish poisons such as fluorine in water.”
“If we look at history, we discover that the Jews have been attacked many times for poisoning and murdering children, but seldom have they found a method so clever and diabolical as the Salk vaccine. It is not too late to save our children from this latest atrocity of the Jews!” [Women's Voice, June 1955, page 11]
In his self-published virulently anti-Jewish book "The Biological Jew" [Faith and Service Books, Staunton, VA, 1968], Mullins compares Jews with biological parasites. He also gives his unique interpretation of Nazism:
"The Jew has always functioned best as a panderer, a pornographer, a master of prostitution, an apostle of sexual perversion, an enemy of the prevailing sexual standards and prohibitions of the gentile community." (page 22)
"Treason, fraud, perversion, [are] all the hallmarks of Jewish life among the gentiles in the Diaspora. And it is parasitism. All of these things are not merely crimes in themselves, they are crimes which are committed as essential parts of the Jew's parasitical relationship with the gentile host. We must remember that there is no Jewish crime per se, since the existence of the Jewish parasite upon the host is a crime against nature, because its existence imperils the health and the life of the host. Thus, everything that the Jew does in connection with this parasitic existence is a criminal act, and part of an overall criminal existence." (page 28)
"This religious ceremony of drinking the blood of an innocent gentile child is basic to the Jew's entire concept of his existence as a parasite, living off of the blood of the host. That is why he refuses to abandon this custom, even though it has brought him close to extinction many times. When the Jew can no longer symbolize his role by kidnapping a perfectly formed gentile child, spiriting him away to a synagogue, and ritually puncturing his body in the places which they boasted they had wounded the Body of Christ, and drinking the blood of the dying child, then, according to Jewish belief, he is doomed. His prophets have warned him that when this custom can no longer be observed, the Jewish parasite's hold onto the host will be loosened, and he will be cast off. Even though this ceremony is so horrible that most Jews refuse to participate in it, and all of them deny its practice, it still remains the final method by which the Jewish leaders signify and retain their control over this people." (page 25)
"Ask any American college graduate - `What is the greatest evil which has ever existed upon this earth? He will reply very promptly, and energetically, `Nazism!'
He gives this answer because it is what he has been taught. In fact, it is all he has been taught, and it is the sole result of four years of higher education. Do not ask him WHY Nazism is the greatest evil that has ever been known, because he does not know. You will only perplex and confuse him, and make him angry at you, because he does not know the WHY of anything. He has only been indoctrinated with conditioned responses, he is repeating the lesson which has been drummed into him until he has learned it by heart, at the hands of his Jewish and shabez goi professors.
In all of the hundreds of books which have been written about Nazism, you will not find a definition of what Nazism is. This is quite understandable. The Jews do not want anyone to know what Nazism is. Nazism is simply this - a proposal that the German people rid themselves of the parasitic Jews. The gentile host dared to protest against the continued presence of the parasite, and attempted to throw it off. It was an ineffectual reaction, because it was emotional and ill-informed, as were all the gentile reactions which preceded it for five thousand years. And how futile it all was, because today, Jewish bankers own sixty per cent of German industry, and their holdings are protected by the occupation army of America." (page 32)
Mullins identified himself in the 12/27/51 issue of Women's Voice, [WV] p6, as “Director” of Aryan League of America - 331 N. Lewis St - Staunton VA.
In a letter to WV publisher Lyrl Clark Van Hyning, Mullins wrote:
“I hope our citizens will awaken to the fact that the international Jewish conspiracy against the white race is our real danger. Communism is a threat to America because of the thousands of Jewish agents working for it in this country.”
In a July/August 1955 WV article by Mullins entitled “International Finance”, Mullins made the following observations:

“There is no ism or international organization which is not controlled directly or indirectly by international bankers. Communism is the most useful puppet of international finance today. Completely financed by the Rothschild bankers through the New York banking house of Kuhn Loeb of New York and Max Warburg Co of Germany, alien agents of international finance overthrew the legal government of Russia in 1917. Now international finance has divided the world into two parts, the democratic world and the Communist world, with the usual expectation of colliding the two forces in a highly profitable slaughter.” …
“Now international finance faces two alternatives: 1. to start the Third World War between `democratic' and `Communist' nations, a war which cannot help but use atomic weapons in such quantity as to destroy most of our civilization. 2. to declare an immediate world dictatorship and execute all opponents of international finance.
“The peoples of the earth have no alternative. They must execute the two hundred members of international finance or civilization will perish from the earth.” [Emphasis in original]
The March 1956 issue of WV, page 12, reprints a letter by Mullins addressed to “Tax Collectors”:
“The sinister Jews behind Communism, for whom Dwight D. Eisenhower is only a pathetic puppet, a posturing figure roiled with its own vanity, may begin to realize that they have run their course upon this earth. They have seized power over men and are stupid enough to think that they can challenge the power of God.”
MULLINS' ASSOCIATION WITH REALPOLITICAL INSTITUTE
and NATIONAL STATES RIGHTS PARTY and THEIR LEADERS
Realpolitical Institute was founded in Chicago, IL circa November 1954 by Maynard Orlando Nelsen aka Max Nelsen and Mullins. Eustace Mullins became its “Director”. [They also founded M&N Associates in Chicago - a strictly letterhead only group).
In his autobiographical memoir, A Writ For Martyrs, Mullins describes Nelsen as “my associate” who was nothing more than “a businessman for many years (who) maintained a stable family life with a wife and two children in a typical American suburb.”[Eustace Mullins: A Writ For Martyrs, p. 114 - self published by Mullins under imprint of O.T.U. Christ Church, Staunton VA].
The reality about Nelsen's background is quite different.
In 1947, Nelsen was the leader of the Minneapolis MN chapter of the Democratic Nationalist Party.
G-2 (Army Intelligence), 5th Army HQ in Chicago, reported that its investigation into Nelsen disclosed his "pro-fascist activities in the past" which included an October 1947 incident where Nelsen wore a Nazi uniform to a demonstration. [Chicago FBI file #105-3802, serial #11, page 5; 8/15/56 Special Agent summary report on F. Allen Mann of Christian Patriots Crusade which discusses Mann's associations - including Max Nelsen.]
In December 1967, the FBI sent a notice to the U.S. Secret Service concerning Nelsen. The FBI form used for such notices contains boxes to allow the FBI to check off why it considered the person potentially dangerous or a security concern. The Bureau checked off 4 boxes which it considered relevant to Nelsen:
“Subversives, ultrarightists, racists and fascists who meet one or more of the following criteria”
“evidence of emotional instability (including unstable residence and employment record) or irrational or suicidal behavior)”
“expressions of strong or violent anti-U.S. sentiment” and

The FBI described Realpolitical Institute as “anticommunist, anti-semitic, and pro white race. It appears to be directed by one individual with no membership and its principal activity is the publication of anti-semitic and pro white race documents.” [FBI HQ file 105-57266, serial #3, 3/4/57]
In January 1957, Realpolitical Institute published a flyer in memo format which contained the following self-description of its purposes:
"To: White American Citizens
Re: Disloyal Jewish Consensus
Subject: Whiteman Survival
"The Realpolitical Institute is dedicated to the racial survival of the Whiteman, both here in our United States of North America and throughout the world."
Now, what sort of people were attracted to Realpolitical Institute? Its officers in 1955 were:
Director = Eustace C. Mullins
Manager = Max Nelsen
Supervisor = Edward Fields

Who were Matt Koehl and Edward Fields?
Matt Koehl
replaced George Lincoln Rockwell as leader of the National Socialist White People's Party (formerly known as American Nazi Party and later known as The New Order) after Rockwell was assassinated in 1967.
The New Order describes itself as follows on its website:
"We are the Movement of Adolf Hitler. We are His heirs. He has given us a commission, which it is our duty to discharge".
Mullins and Koehl were roommates on several occasions when they lived in New York City and Chicago. They also lectured to college audiences together. For example, they made a joint appearance at Shimer College in Mt. Carroll IL and later at University of Illinois at Urbana. [FBI HQ file 105-77481, serial #1 and HQ file 157-2-53, #19x]
According to an article by the late Rick Cooper, (Cooper was the former Business Manager of the National Socialist White People's Party) Eustace Mullins, Matt Koehl, and Edward Fleckenstein were arrested near Middletown, New York circa 1955 in connection with their sodomizing of a hitch-hiking teenage boy in the back seat of a car in which they all were travelling.
This probably accounts for why Mullins is described in FBI memos as follows:
“Mullins is a warped, degenerate and depraved individual.” [FBI HQ file 105-15727, #42; 6/2/59 memo from A. Rosen to J. Edgar Hoover] and again “He is a depraved, warped degenerate…” [HQ file 105-15727, #114; 10/29/68 memo from M.A. Jones to Mr. Bishop].
NATIONAL STATES RIGHTS PARTY / CHRISTIAN ANTI-JEWISH PARTY
J.B. STONER and EDWARD REED FIELDS
The October 1967 issue of the National States Rights Party (NSRP) newspaper, The Thunderbolt, contains a letter-to-the-editor from Eustace Mullins in which herecommends membership in NSRP.
FBI description of NSRP:
“The NSRP is based on racism and bigotry, with blacks and Jews as its main hate targets. Blacks are regarded as inferior and polluting the white race, while Jews are equated with Communists, subverting the Government, and aiding the blacks…The dominant figures in the NSRP during its entire existence have been Edward Reed Fields, its National Director, and Jesse Benjamin Stoner, its National Chairman. Both have lengthy backgrounds of hatemongering…Close relations exist between the NSRP and other white extremist groups, particularly Klan organizations…The tenets and purpose of the NSRP are strikingly similar to those of Klan organizations…The membership consists of fanatical segregationists, rabid anti-Semites, and members and former members of Klan organizations.” [FBI monograph, White Extremist Organizations, Part II, May 1970, pages 1-2.]
“Fields served in the U.S. Naval Reserve for five months in 1951 but was discharged because of unsuitability. The following year, his draft board found him unfit for military service after he was diagnosed as a paranoic personality, almost totally insane.” … [Ibid page 4]
“In his mid-teens, Stoner became friendly with a German-born neighbor who apparently imbued him with a fanatical hatred of the Jews and a strong sympathy for Nazi Germany. His obsessive animosity toward the Jews has convinced him that they should be exterminated by any means necessary. He once remarked that `Hitler was too moderate' in his treatment of the Jews.” [Ibid, page 5]

Some additional background information about the two principal officers of the NSRP (Edward Fields and J.B. Stoner) will serve to explain why Mullins recommended membership in the NSRP.
Edward Reed Fields
Edward Fields was born in Chicago September 30, 1932 but his parents soon moved to Georgia. In 1946, while he was in high school, Fields joined Emory Burke's new Atlanta-based organization, The Columbians, the first openly neo-nazi organization in postwar America. [The Columbians was listed as a subversive fascist organization by the Attorney General of the United States.] While in high school, Fields also created a short-lived pro-nazi group of his own called the Black Front.
Sometime in the early 1950's Fields joined J.B. Stoner's Christian Anti-Jewish Party (CAJP) and he became its Executive Secretary. The CAJP was created in 1945 by Stoner and Emmett O'Neill Morris in Tennessee. Both Stoner and Morris had been pro-nazi during World War II. A CAJP flyer summarized its world-view:
“Revolutions, wars, internationalism, economic chaos, inflations, starvations, unemployment, and depressions are deliberately designed by the Jews to promote their communistic conspiracy. In every Communist country, the Jews are the ruling race. Our Party proposed for the Government to deport all communists to Palestine. Without the Jews there would be NO communism.”
“The Holy Bible says we Christians are GOD's Chosen People, not the Jews. The Jews are the children of the devil. All Christians are due to be against the Jew-devils because they are GOD's worst enemies in this world.”
A 1951 letter-to-the-editor by Fields was published in Women's Voice. Fields declared that the suicide of Brooklyn baseball pitcher Hugh Casey was the result of “Satanic Talmudic Jews”. [Women's Voice, 7/26/51].
In 1955, the Texas Attorney General listed Fields as a leader of the U.S. Klans, Knights of the Ku Klux Klan.
In May 1956 Fields applied for and was admitted to the Naval Reserve Training Program at Chamblee GA but when he attempted to set up a chapter of the Christian Anti-Jewish Party at his base, his enlistment was cancelled.
In November 1957 the United White Party was organized. Its principals included Edward Fields, Emory Burke (The Columbians), Matt Koehl, John Kasper (Seaboard White Citizens Council), John G. Crommelin, Millard Grubbs, and many other individuals whom the FBI described as “a group of notorious anti-semites”. [FBI HQ file 105-66233, #11; 1/22/58 J. Edgar Hoover memo to SAC Knoxville]
Another Hoover memo declared that “leaders and members of United White Party advocate segregation and are anti-Semitic and anti-Negro and many are members of Klan organizations.” [FBI HQ file 105-66233, #23; 5/22/58 Hoover memo to SAC Knoxville.]
In the summer of 1958, UWP merged into the National States Rights Party and Edward Fields became its National Secretary and National Information Director and editor of its newspaper, The Thunderbolt.
J.B. Stoner aka Jesse Benjamin Stoner Jr.
J.B. Stoner was born April 13, 1924 in Walker County GA. His father died when he was 5 years old and his mother died when he was 17. At two years of age he was stricken with polio.
Like Edward Fields, Stoner was involved in anti-semitic and racist activities very early in his life. In 1942, Stoner re-chartered a dormant chapter of the KKK in Chattanooga TN and became its Kleagle.
In 1945 he organized the Christian Anti-Jewish Party. During an interview with an Atlanta GA Journal-Constitution reporter published on July 5, 1946, Stoner declared that Hitler had been too moderate and the goal of the Christian Anti-Jewish Party was "to make being a Jew a crime punishable by death." In 1946, while living in Tennessee, Stoner ran for Congress under the CAJP banner.
In the early 1950's, Stoner moved to Atlanta, where, in 1952, he graduated from Atlanta Law School. He was a practicing attorney, predominantly for Klan defendants, until he was disbarred after his 1980 conviction for conspiracy.
In 1958, Stoner became General Counsel for the National States Rights Party and in 1959 he became National Chairman. In 1977 he was indicted for June 1958 bombing of Bethel Baptist Church in Birmingham AL. He fought extradition for 3 years but in May 1980 he was tried and convicted for conspiracy in that bombing. The jury took only 90 minutes to reach their guilty verdict. He served 3 years of a 10 year prison sentence.
After J.B. Stoner's unsuccessful 1972 campaign for the U.S. Senate, Edward Fields wrote in a "Personal News Letter" to the NSRP membership that while "everyone knew we could not win…our main goal was to reach the public with our message" and Fields boasted that the NSRP had "held to our open and clear-cut message of White Racism and Anti-Jewism."
See the July 1972 issue of the NSRP newspaper, The Thunderbolt, for an article entitled "The Enemy Within" which blames “Jews” for virtually every problem besetting American society. It then offered its solution to the "Jewish problem":
"What is required? Every Jew who holds a position of power or authority must be removed from that position. If this does not work, then we must establish the Final Solution!!!"
MULLINS and JOHN G. CROMMELIN
During 1959 and 1960 both Mullins and Matt Koehl volunteered to assist retired Rear Admiral John G. Crommelin in his campaign for Vice President.
The FBI described Crommelin as “viciously anti-Semitic and anti-Negro” [FBI HQ file 62-91575, serial #17, 10/24/58 memo from SAC Mobile to J. Edgar Hoover.]
Mullins and Koehl lived in the basement of Crommelin's Wetumpka AL farmhouse until Crommelin discovered their homosexual activities. Years later, Crommelin told American Nazi Party Deputy Commander, Karl Allen, that Mullins and Koehl were homosexuals.
Crommelin (a life-long racist and anti-semite) recommended publications authored or distributed by Conde McGinley and Gerald L.K. Smith. Crommelin was a featured speaker at Smith rallies and he owned stock in McGinley's Christian [sic] Educational Association.
In March 1957, Crommelin wrote a letter as a Trustee of the Elmore County AL White Citizens Council which he addressed to Congressman Francis E. Walter of the House Committee on Un-American Activities. Crommelin made the following observations:
“Many of us in this locality are in complete sympathy with your great work in trying to stop the immigration into this country of the scum of middle Europe and the scourge of the great White Christian Civilization. However, we feel that some positive action with just one man with guts to alert our people to the domestic Jewish-Communist threat is of paramount importance now.”
In 1957, retired Rear Admiral John Crommelin wrote a letter to all “Alabama Circuit Court Judges and Editors of Weekly newspapers” which declared:
“Pearl Harbor! Little Rock! The Communist-Jewish conspiracy or `Invisible Government' of the United States dictates the use of federal bayonets to force commingling of white and colored children. The basic reason for this tragedy is the appalling lack of real information available to the average American citizens concerning the operation of the Communist-Jewish conspiracy and its component elements such as NAACP, the American Jewish Committee, and the Anti-Defamation League of B'nai B'rith.” Crommelin then recommended literature published by Conde McGinley and Gerald L.K. An October 1958 FBI memo from the Special Agent in Charge of its Mobile AL office to J. Edgar Hoover contains a Hoover handwritten comment about Crommelin in which Hoover describes Crommelin as a “hate monger”. The FBI memo characterizes Crommelin as “viciously anti-Semitic and anti-Negro.” [FBI HQ file 62-91575, serial #17, 10/24/58].
Subsequently, in January 1959, internal FBI memos discussed whether or not the Bureau should reply to several letters by Crommelin which he sent to J. Edgar Hoover.
In a handwritten notation on one memo, Hoover wrote:
“We shouldn't answer anything from this screwball Crommelin.” [HQ 62-91575, serial #30, 01/09/59 memo from G.A. Nease to Associate Director Clyde Tolson.]
MULLINS'ASSOCIATIONS and QUARRELS
WITH PROMINENT CONSPIRACY PROPONENTS
In May 1955, Gerald L.K. Smith offered to pay Mullins $50 to review the book “Iron Curtain Over America” by John O. Beaty. Smith instructed Mullins to “mark the most damning paragraphs concerning the Jewish conspiracy contained in the book.”
In December 1955 letters to Gerald L.K. Smith, Mullins wrote that Elizabeth Dilling was the source for allegations circulating within the “patriot movement” that Mullins was “a notorious ex-convict convicted of many sex crimes against children.” [12/15/55 Mullins letter to GLKS.]
Mullins also wrote that:
“Nearly all the disunity among nationalists in America can be traced to the Dilling-Freedman-McGinley axis…” [The reference is to Elizabeth Dilling, Benjamin Freedman and Conde McGinley. 12/19/55 Mullins letter to GLKS].
See April 1961 John Birch Society Bulletin, page 16 for the following Robert Welch descriptive comment:
"…the most vicious and most extensive charges ever leveled against me have been by such notorious anti-Semites as Lyrl Clark Van Hyning (Women's Voice) and Elizabeth Dilling (The Dilling Bulletin)…"
In February 1966, Donald Gray, (the Birch Society's Wholesale Book Division Business Manager) sent a memo to all American Opinion Bookstores. The purpose of the memo was to identify the type of material that should NOT be sold in, or recommended by, JBS bookstores.
Gray described such verboten material as:
"...most of the books and pamphlets with an anti-Semitic flavor which we omit from our booklist (that) are not of sufficient value in substance or scholarship to rise above the level of anti-Semitic invective or propaganda. Frankly, in our opinion, this applies to most of the books or pamphlets by Marilyn Allen, Richard Cotten, Myron Fagan, Kenneth Goff, Wickliffe Vennard, Eustace Mullins, Gerald L.K. Smith, Robert H. Williams, and Benjamin Freedman." [my emphasis in bold type.]
MULLINS on THE JOHN BIRCH SOCIETY
In his 1988 book, Murder By Injection, and in interviews on Rense.com, Mullins made the following assertions about the origins of the John Birch Society:
“JBS was setup by Nelson Rockefeller. I knew two people at the original meeting. They needed a right-wing, anti-communist organization. NR decided that Robert Welch was the man to run JBS, so he arranged for the sale of Welch's Candy Co. (where Robert Welch had been working for his brother John) to Nabisco (which was a Rockefeller controlled company) at a highly inflated price and Welch was given an income to run the John Birch Society.
Revilo Oliver was a good friend of mine and he was one of the founders of the JBS. He and I were sitting in his living room once and he told me that he knew Nelson Rockefeller ran the Birch Society because he had a revolving fund at Chase Manhattan Bank, and whenever Welch needed a quarter million dollars to meet the payroll, he'd go to CMB and withdraw the money.”
In February 2007, John Birch Society President John F. McManus responded as follows when asked about Mullins' charges:
“The only correct item in the Mullins' interview is his mention of Revilo Oliver as one of the JBS Founders. There were 11 men who sat through RW's two-day presentation in December 1958. Oliver was heavily involved in JBS (writing regularly for American Opinion magazine) until July 1966 when a speech he gave at the New England Rally for God, Family and Country disturbed RW [Robert Welch] to the degree that he traveled to Illinois to sit down with Oliver and discuss it. Oliver refused to let him in his home, told RW he wanted nothing more to do with JBS, and started a campaign to besmirch the Society.
I never saw any evidence that Oliver was responsible for the Mullins' charges about Rockefeller although it's possible that he started that nonsense. The truth is completely opposite. Nelson Rockefeller had no part in the JBS - ever!
RW separated himself from the Welch Candy Company before he started JBS because he expected retaliation and didn't want what he was about to do [to] reflect negatively on the company. The sale of the company to Nabisco in 1963 was engineered by James O. Welch, RW's younger brother. The company was known as the James O. Welch Candy Company and James was its President, RW its Vice President.
There was no JBS bank account at Chase Manhattan…”
And
“There have always been several reasons why our American Opinion Bookstores were asked not to stock the works of some persons and organizations. One was their anti-Semitic content. Others included faulty research, unproven claims, nastiness toward JBS, racism, etc.
Mullins' works were placed in the `not recommended' category because they were deemed unreliable. After that decision was made, and probably in retaliation, Mullins issued a book entitled Murder By Injection in which he devoted several pages to making the most outrageous and ridiculous charges about our Society and Founder (Robert Welch) that have ever been made. We have frequently had to respond to his absurdities.
After I sent the most recent message to you, I recalled being approached by Mullins who hoped that we might help to market his books. This was long after he had published the claims about Rockefeller being the JBS patron. The response to him was simple: Why would you want an organization that you believe is part of the Conspiracy's subversion to market your books?
I also recall meeting the man who financed the Mullins book on the Federal Reserve. He told me that he was very angry about having spent money for such a poor piece of work.”
Significantly, Revilo Oliver's memoir, [America's Decline: The Education of A Conservative, Londinium Press, 1982, 376pp] does NOT discuss any Rockefeller connection to the Birch Society.
Below I copy the text of an April 2008 memo by Birch Society President, John McManus, which addressed the fictions disseminated by Mullins concerning the Birch Society:
"Memo Responding to the Wild Charges of Eustace Mullins
In 1988, Eustace Mullins issued a book entitled Murder By Injection. It dealt mainly with his belief that inoculations against diseases were dangerous, hence his title. He described the book himself as “the story of the medical conspiracy against America.”
Readers of this book will find that pages 340-341 contain several sensational charges about Robert Welch, the Founder of The John Birch Society. They are all completely false. But, because these claims about Robert Welch have been circulated from time to time, we are forced to respond. All of these claims and appropriate denials of their veracity follow.
1. The Rockefellers were also active on the `rightwing' front through their sponsorship of the John Birch Society. There has never been any such sponsorship of the Society by any Rockefeller.
2. Robert Welch, a 32nd degree Mason…. Robert Welch was never a member of any branch of Masonry at any level.
3. Nelson Rockefeller purchased his family firm, the Welch Candy Company, from him [Robert] at a handsome price. Robert Welch separated himself from the James O. Welch Candy Company (James was his brother) more than a year before he launched the John Birch Society. The company was later sold by James not by Robert, to Nabisco, not to Nelson Rockefeller.
4. Welch chose the principal officers of the John Birch Society from his acquaintances at the Council on Foreign Relations. Robert Welch chose for his Advisory Council many of the men he had met during his very active participation in the work in the National Association of Manufacturers, not the Council on Foreign Relations. These men included Wm. J. Grede, John T. Brown, W.B. McMillan, J. Nelson Shepherd, Robert W. Stoddard, Louis Ruthenburg, A.G. Heinsohn, and N. Floyd McGowin. None these men had anything to do with the Council on Foreign Relations. Years later, former State Department diplomat Spruille Braden accepted appointment to the JBS Council after discovering that the Council on Foreign Relations which he had joined as a young man, was a fountain of anti-Americanism that he no longer wanted to be associated with. Mullins never mentioned this.
Before the Murder By Injection book had come to the attention of anyone on the staff of the Society, the monthly newsletter “Criminal Politics” had published the above charges as if they were truthful. A letter was sent to the Cincinnati office of this newsletter setting the record straight. The newsletter's editor sent the JBS-issued letter to Mullins who promptly responded with a threatening letter to the JBS official who wrote it insisting that the corrections of the charges he made in Murder By Injection were “prima facie evidence of an intent to injure and defame me.” And Mullins added: “You are hereby placed on notice that I intend to file suit on your vicious and underhanded smear attack against me and my work.”
All this for calmly and accurately defending the Society and Robert Welch from completely false charges. Lawyers for JBS immediately advised that the threat issued by Mullins was merely a scare tactic that would not be carried out and should be ignored.
Then, in an interview published in 2003 in a small-circulation newsletter entitled Emerson's Review, Mullins repeated some of the above absurdities but added that “a good friend of mine [who] was one of the founders of the JBS told me that he knew Nelson Rockefeller ran the Birch Society because he had a revolving fund at Chase Manhattan Bank, and whenever Welch needed a quarter million dollars to meet the payroll, he'd go to CMB and withdraw the money.” That is pure and unadulterated nonsense.
Mullins has frequently complained that the Society has “blacklisted” him and his books. He should hardly be surprised that JBS isn't about to endorse him and his works after he issued such defamatory nonsense about the Society and its Founder. In truth, Robert Welch who had read some of Mullins' publications before being attacked by the man had never wanted anything to do with Mullins, including not recommending any of his books. If others found value in the man's work, that was their decision. Even before Murder By Injection, JBS had a policy of refusing to review or distribute anything produced by Eustace Mullins. That decision had been made because the man's works were not considered reliable. This is still JBS policy."
