Luisshowssufficientcontrolofsomesimplegrammaticalformsandappropriatevocabulary(I’mstudent,myschoolisverygood,everybodyplayfootball,basketball,it’sfantastic,yes)butthereareexamplesoflimitedcontrolaswell,asmostofhisresponsesinPart1arebrief(Mexico,3days,yes,verygood)andoftenconsistofisolatedwordsandphrases(myteachersandmyfriends,yes,myschool).Hecancommunicateinasimpleway(myschoolisbig,myteachershappyandveryveryintelligent)butuseslimitedstructuresandvocabulary(Yes,isverygood,thepeopleishappy(P1),fromCanada(P2).InPart2hedoesnotattempttoformquestionsaccurately,relyingexclusivelyonthepromptsonhiscard(thelibrary,where?thelibrary,openingtimes?)Whenanswering,heoccasionallyattemptstomakeminorchangestothewordsonthecard(theteacherisEnglishandFrench)butmostofhisanswerscomestraightfromthecard(fromCanada,ICCCollege),andthisisnotalwayssuccessful(hewas(wants)tohavefootballclubafternoonschool).
Luisiseasytounderstandandspeaksclearlythroughoutthetest.Hehassomecontrolofphonologicalfeaturesatutteranceandwordlevel(Myschoolisverygood,isbig,myteacher’shappyandveryveryintelligent).Hestressesmostwordscorrectly(fantastic,computers).Hereliesonrisingintonationratherthanquestionwordorderwhenaskinghisquestions,althoughthisisnotconsistent,asthefinalquestionhasfallingintonation(thelibrarycomputers)sosoundslikeastatement.Hisindividualsoundsaregenerallyaccuratealthoughthereareafewproblems:times(tames),big(bih),library(leebrary)andsomespelling(R=air,I=ee).
Luisisgenerallyabletomaintaincommunicationinsimpleexchangeswithboththeinterlocutorandhispartner.InPart1hisanswersaremostlyappropriatebutlimitedtoshortutterances(attheHighSchool,December),buthisanswerto‘WhatdoyouthinkofCambridge?’(Idon’tknow)isnotappropriate,andneedsafollow-upquestion.InPart2theinteractionbreaksdownwhenhegivesaninappropriateanswertothequestion‘Whendidhestart?’(ICCCollege)althoughherespondsappropriatelywhenherealiseshismistake(oh,sorry,Idon’tknow).HeneedstheInterlocutortopointtotherelevantpartofthecardtoanswerthequestion.Healsostruggleswithfindingtheanswertothefinalquestionandformulatinghisresponse.Hecommunicatesallhisquestionstohispartner,butreliesheavilyonthepromptcardthroughout.
Luiscanconveybasicmeaninginveryfamiliarsituationsinmostofthetestbutisnotabletoextendhisanswers.HegivesbriefbutrelevantanswerstotheInterlocutor’squestionsinPart1.InPart2heisnotabletoproducewell-formedquestionsalthoughheanswersmostofhispartners’questionsadequately,althoughhereliesheavilyonthepromptcards.

Gustavoisabletohandlecommunicationineverydaysituationsandspeaksfairlynaturallywithgenerallyappropriate,thoughlimitedvocabulary.Althoughhisutterancesaregenerallyshort,healwaysconveyshismeaning.Thereissomeattemptatexpansionandheisgenerallyaccurate,especiallywithhisquestionsinPart2.
