A research question

1

RQ is very broad and needs narrowing. Supervision is needed in this respect. Why add
“structure”? The nature of English use is more than enough.

B approach

2

The approach, particularly the connection to history, is appropriate given the broad RQ.

C analysis/interpretation

2

The analysis of the historical roots is appropriate, but later this approach changes in an effort to
say something about structure and global English. Again, the broad RQ is problematic.

D argument/evaluation

2

Connected to the above, the argument seems to be developing well in the first 10 or 11 pages
and then takes an unclear turn. The support, other than some stats, is not always relevant.

E conclusion

1

There is an attempt to conclude, but the “global” stature of English is not convincingly
connected to the argument presented on the development of English in India.

F abstract

0

An explanation of how research is conducted is not “scope”. No discernable scope is present
though the RQ and a vague conclusion seem to be there.

G formal presentation

1

Poorly presented TOC. Some footnotes misplaced. Appendix untidy and not used or referenced
properly. Bibliography form is consistent.

H holistic judgement

2

The candidate has some interesting points but gets lost in not having a more refined question
and approach. There is some evidence of understanding the bigger language issue.

TOTAL OUT OF 24

11

This paper has potential but falls short in presentation and sustained focus.
