First thing I can think of is the activity we did in class, for first reading from unit 2. We were divided in group and ours’ job was to find quotes with arguments that the author introduced us to. The essay was really hard to understand and to interpret, but discussions in group helped a lot. We had lots of ideas and we were able to share them with members. As a prompt I chose to compare Mckiben’s piece with MacKinnon’s essay. The activity in class helped me truly understand what the author meant, and I was able to explain his arguments. I think that the only flaw of this activity was lack of time. There was so much to talk about. The class should last longer than hour and twenty minutes!
When I was reading those two essays I would get confused all the time. The ideas were unclear to me, and it was hard to find a deeper meaning. At first I was trying to find one quote in one essay and the one quote in the other essay, and then compare them to each other. It wasn’t a successful process, I wasn’t sure if the comparison was accurate, because I had trouble to interpret quotes. The most helpful thing was to pull out quote on the separate sheet of paper, and then slowly analyze it. To improve my reading skills I would research words that had trouble to understand, or I didn’t know like.
