In this lesson, youʼll learn how to prepare for 問題4 of the Listening Comprehension section.

What is 問題 4 like?

In 問題 4, examinees are supposed to look at the picture printed in the question booklet while

listening to a sentence that explains the situation. After that, listen to the question and three

possible answer choices and choose the sentence that the person indicated by the arrow

would say.

The sentence explaining the situation, the question being asked, and answer choices are not

printed on the booklet and are read only once, so please pay careful attention.

問題４では絵を見ながら質問を聞いてください。それから正し

い答えを１から３の中から一つ選んでください。

★ Set greeting phrases

→ Reviewing set phrases used everyday is highly recommended. For example, set phrases

such as おだいじに ("take care"), けっこうです ("no thanks/thatʼs good"), かしこまりました

("Certainly/Understood."), しょうちしました ("Yes/Very well."), おせわになっています

("Thank you for your patronage"), おせわになりました("Thank you for all of your trouble") and

so on are important to know.

★ Honorific and Humble language

→ Review the humble form of a verb: お + [masu stem of a verb] + する as well as irregular

humble forms of verbs, such as いたす (from する、"to do"), いただく (from もらう、"to

receive"), もうす (from 言う、"to say"), and so on.

On JLPT N3, it is unlikely that complicated honorific or humble language grammar will

appear. However, we recommend that you review the frequently used honorific and humble

phrases listed below.

■ How to ask someone to do something

Please note that following phrases are used to talk about someone else's action (not your

own actions).

- ---てくださいますか。

- ---ていただけますか。

- ---てくださいませんか。

- ---ていただけませんか。

- ---ていただけないでしょうか。

- ---ていただきたいんですが…。

■ Honorific expressions

The passive forms of verbs are also used as honorific expressions. It is said that the degree

of politeness level is somewhat lower than that of the “o+[masu stem of a verb]+ni naru” form

or special (or irregular) honorific verbs. Please not that this formation, which is known as the

"passive honorific", no longer has the passive meaning when used in this way.

How to make the passive form of a verb

- Group 1 verbs; Replace the final -u sound with ‒a reru

ex) よむ → よまれる, かく → かかれる

- Group 2 verbs; Replace the final ‒ru with ‒rareru

ex) おしえる → おしえられる, はじめる → はじめられる

*The potential form of Group 2 verbs is the same form as the passive forms. You have to

identify whether the sentence has potential, passive or honorific meaning through syntax or
