Oliver Hi, Laura.
Laura Hi. Can I tell you about a rescue I saw
yesterday?
Oliver A rescue? How exciting!
Laura Yes, it was. Well, I was walking home
after school. It was about half past four.
While I was walking along by the river, I
heard a cry for help. So I looked around
and then I saw a boy in the river.
Oliver Oh, no! How old was he?
Laura Well, he looked about nine.
Oliver Could he swim?
Laura
Well, he certainly wasn’t a very good
swimmer.
Oliver So what happened?
Laura
Well, I can’t swim very well, so I didn’t
want to jump into the river to save him.
So I got my mobile phone out of my bag
and phoned for help. But then I saw a
woman walking along on the other side
of the river. She saw the boy and
immediately jumped into the water. She
swam out to him and rescued him.
Oliver
That’s amazing!

Presenter
On this morning’s World Schools
programme, I’m talking to
Jacob, from Botswana, in Africa.
Please tell us about your school,
Jacob.
Jacob
Hi. I go to a small school, about
five kilometres from the Chobe
National Park. Students must
get up early, because school
starts at half past seven every
day!
Presenter What are you studying at the
moment?
Jacob
Um ... English, maths, history,
geography and science. Next
summer, we’re also having
French lessons.
Presenter
What’s your favourite subject?
Jacob
Science. In spring and autumn,
we sometimes study birds and
animals in the National Park.
The park has got wild dogs,
crocodiles and 120,000
elephants! We can watch
animals looking for food, or
washing in the river. It’s a lot
more interesting than reading
books!
