Insect, the London-based design
group, was set up by Luke Davies and
Paul Humphrey from a box room in
the Old Truman Brewery in 1997, and
became one of a handful of agencies
to work from the Brick Lane venue in
East London from day one.
We saw the whole area explode
around us, remembers Paul
Humphrey. But after two years of
music and club-related design work,
we felt it was time to expand and
moved to nearby Clerkenwell.
Now based in Old Street, the team
has employed another designer, but
still works primarily in the music and
youth sector of design fusing
illustration, photography, typography
and taxidermy into its work.
Over the past two years, Insect has
also concentrated on producing art
prints for graffiti artist Banksy s
Pictures On Walls online gallery and
for exhibitions in London, Paris, New
York and Tokyo. The studio s clients
range from small record labels to
global brands such as Adidas, HP,
BBC Worldwide, Vans, Nike, Animal
New York, MTV and Levi s. And their
motto? Six legs are better than two!

DONNIE BAUER
LOCATION Chicago, USA
JOB Freelance illustrator
CONTACT www.mydbmedia.com
SOFTWARE Illustrator and Photoshop
Donnie Bauer is a Chicago-based artist with an extensive
background in the arts and a focus on design and motion
graphics. He is currently accepting freelance work and
assisting with an online publication called Carpal Tunnel
Magazine (www.carpaltunnelmag.com).
Most of my work is influenced by urban lifestyles and
organic forms, both beauty and chaos existing together in
one place, says Donnie, whose illustrative urban style
has caught the attention of XLR8R magazine and Ecko
Unlimited. Donnie is currently working on a series of
animated logo treatments for Ecko TV.
1. WHY? This piece was originally created for Rockpile
3
magazine, which ran an editorial on Why? an indie-rock
band. They supplied me with a photo of the band and I
built the imagery around it. It s a great example of how
someone s music can motivate art. Why? is a band that
I ve followed for years and the artwork reflects my
interpretation of their music.
2. DESIGN GRAPHICS I created this piece for Design
Graphics magazine. The idea was to create a purely
chaotic digital mess using imagery that would reflect
tools used in design. Each of the images was drawn in
Illustrator and the colouring and pixel effects were
implemented in Photoshop.
3. MF DOOM This is a personal project of mine. MF
Doom is one of my favourite underground hip-hop artists
and I ve always been able to envision myself creating
imagery for someone like him. I guess the direction for
this image came from the music. MF Doom s style of
rapping is very free flowing and organic, but his image is
often ominous and dark. The artwork was all drawn in
Illustrator and coloured in Photoshop.
4. INSPIRE This image was created for an art show in
Washington D.C. The show explored urban lifestyles and
its effect on art. It depicts a friend of mine in his b-boy
stance surrounded by elements of graffiti and street art.
Half of the image was painted or drawn by hand and the
other half was created in Illustrator and Photoshop.
