AUTHOR’S NOTE:
Exaltation is the expression of overwhelming joy. When it is in
the life of the believer it is the overwhelming joy expressed to the
Lord God for all that He has done. What else can we do when we
consider all that God has done for us?
This is what I want to show you through this book of songs. It is
my exaltation to God. From the first song to the last poem these
songs express my heart.

NO MANS LAND 64
I want to tell God thank you for every good and perfect that He
has poured down upon me through my life. But I also want to thank
my God for all the struggles that He has allowed me to go through.
For it is through all these struggles and desert places that I have
seen Him forever faithful.
I wan to thank my family and friends who have walked with me
through my failures and victories over the past year. To my children,
I love you so much and I am so proud of the fine men and women of
God that you have grown to become. To my brother I want to say
thank you for living out the life of God daily before me.
To my mother and father, I cannot express to you the love and
adoration I feel for you. You are my life and without you I would not
have been introduced to God. You taught me through my life in ac-
tion and word. Sometimes it was hard and I hurt you yet you never
abandoned me or pushed me away. You showed the true love of
God .

EXISTENCE
Poem by
R. James Simmons
Suicide solutions, for an empty existence
A faceless number in the crowd
Abortion, corruption, political salvation
Makes me want to scream out loud
Religious segregation for empty sanctuaries
You close the doors to the lost
Yet in my quiet moments as I bow down in reverence
I wonder my brother, if you’ve counted the cost
We are not a single island in an empty sea
We are not asked to simply be
We are a light set upon a hill of existence
We must show our luminescence
For we the church bear upon our life
The mark of the paid price
That He gave for us upon the cross
So that man is no more lost
Step out of the box of your tradition
Break free from the boundaries
Be willing to do more than you’ve always done
Be one who lives beyond your simple existence

And You are there
Poem by
R. James Simmons
See the rain as it hits the ground
See the steam rise on this arid town
And I can see Your all around me
Feel the wind upon my face
I hear the birds sing
Of Your amazing grace
And I know You are all around me
If I could climb the highest mountain
And You are there
If I could swim the deepest ocean
You are there
If I could reach the farthest star
And You are there
Oh God, You are there
See an eagle take to flight
See it soar across the sky
See the magic of our human form
Look into the face of a child newborn
I hear the voice of heaven proclaim
I feel the drop of the gentle rain
And in all of this I know
And in all of this You show
That You are around me

No I ain’t no superman
Poem by
R. James Simmons
No I ain’t no superman
Flying across the sky
To save the day
Yes I am just a simple man
But I know the one
Who rose from the grave
I cant walk on water
I cant calm the sea
But I’ve met the one like no other
Who came to set the captives free
He opened up lifeless eyes
Made a deaf man hear again
He stepped through the veil of death
He’s Jesus Christ and He lives again
No I ain’t no superman
Stopping bullets with just his hand
But I know the one who spoke
Worlds into life
No I cant just buildings tall
Or leap from the highest water fall
But I know the man who made the water wine
And raised a friend from behind deaths wall

Song of Praise
Poem by
R. James Simmons
From creation rings
The songs of redemption
Proclaiming to all the world
The songs of the Lamb
Salvation came
The promised Messiah
He’s the King of Glory
Hosanna, the Great I am
Let the nations now rejoice
Shout Hosanna, lift their voice
For salvation has come to man
Rejoice and dance oh creation
Proclaim the day of His redemption
Sing new songs of praise
Sing new songs of praise oh creation
For the Lord has given Himself
He has taken upon Himself our sins
He has become the sacrifice
That we may be redeemed from the curse
Sing songs of praise and adoration
Shout songs of worship
Declare unto the people of the world
That salvation has come

No one there to show them solutions
No one to offer hope from above
The box is lowered into the cold ground
And no one’s there to put a name
On the cold steel sign at the graveside
No one there to say goodbye
The alleyway box sits quiet and still
As the rain soaks her clothing and bed
She is gone today and no one sees
She is gone today and no one weeps
This mother, wife, sister, daughter
And the sign says Jesus saves
And the sign says Jesus cares
And the sign says Jesus gave
But there’s no one there to offer them food
No one there to offer them love
No one there to show them solutions
No one to offer hope from above

Song for Susie
Poem by
R. James Simmons
Little Susie, living in a wooden box
Just another day in the life
In the light of a wooden cross
Wondering what awaits inside
Neon signs and stained glass windows
Separate them from the world within
Fighting off the nightmare shadows
And the empty world that they live in
And the sign says Jesus saves
And the sign says Jesus cares
And the sign says Jesus gave
But there’s no one there to offer them food
No one there to offer them love
No one there to show them solutions
No one to offer hope from above
She thinks back to the days past
She thinks back to her home and life
And yet the pain of memories pull
Her back to the reality of today
As the rain falls down
and the cold grips hard
And the sickness tears
At her wounded heart
And the sign says Jesus saves
And the sign says Jesus cares
And the sign says Jesus gave
But there’s no one there to offer them food
No one there to offer them love

In the Garden
Lyrics by Charles Miles
Music by R. James Simmons
Em D C
I co-me to the gar-den a-lone,
Em D C
While the dew is still on the ro-os-es,
Am D Em D C
And the voice I hear, falling o-n my ear,
Am D Em
The Son of God dis-clo-ses.

He speaks and the sound of His voice,

Is so sweet the birds hush their singing,
Am D Em D C
And the mel-o-dy that He gave to me,

And He walks with me, and He talks with me,
D Em
And He tells me I am His own,
Em D C Am7
And the joy we share as we tar--ry there,
Am D Em
None other has ever known.
Em D C
I’d stay in the garden with Him,
Em D C
Tho’ the night a-round me be fal-ling,

But He bids me go thru the voice of woe,
Am D Em
His voice to me is cal--ling.

There she found forgiveness
As she knelt there all alone
A man told her of mercy
And love that had no end
A price paid on a wooden cross
To set us free from sin
Chorus:
Cause Jesus came to break the chains
Of no mans land
We don’t have to be condemned
To no mans land
The price it has been paid
On Jesus Christ its laid
We can be made free from no mans land
62
Chorus:
Cause life is hard living in no mans land
No one will even be a friend in no mans land
A life lived all alone
In a world that’s cold as stone
That’s the life for those in no mans land
She stands now on a corner
As a victim of the streets
Her body sold as merchandise
For a single bite to deat
Another faceless number
In a social workers file
But deep inside the wounded soul
Is a weeping lonely child
Then one night Mary went
To a little tiny room

No Man’s Land
Words and Music by
R. James Simmons
Little Mary Anne tried to be real strong
Tho mama seemed to blame her
Every time things went wrong
When daddy ran away
When rent couldn’t be paid
Oh mama please don’t beat me
Like you did yesterday
So many years gone by
And Marry Anne wont cry
Not a tear was shed
The day her mama died
Surviving on her own
Is something she has known
Living here in no mans land
With a heart that’s made of stone
60
I saw the tears you cried
Chorus:
Hey there little dreamer
I offer love that has no end
Hey there little dreamer
I will set you free from your sin

Hey there little dreamer
I will wipe away all your tears
Now she finds himself in an empty home
Its crowded but no ones there
A marriage that has long since died
A husband who doesn't care
Her children have all gone away
Into worlds of their own
Then a voice calls to her
And melts the heart of stone
Refrain:
I was there when he walked away
I was there when he lied
I was there when your heart was broken

Little Dreamer
Words and Music by
R. James Simmons
She was once a little girl
With dreams she hoped to come true
To have a lovely home
And a child or two
To be captured by a shining knight
And taken from her world
To be swept away to a perfect place
Where there is no more hurt
Refrain:
But reality can bring you down
It can cut you to the core
It can tear away every dream
Until you dream no more

God’s people seem to rise and fly
When the Spirit falls upon sinful man
And a wounded soldiers back has strength again
There’s no words that can tell
The joy that comes from the Holy well
Where the waters fall upon the thirsty soul
But when you take a drink

Blinded eyes are opened and they can see

Church Like Never Before
Words and Music by
R. James Simmons
Here I sit in my Sunday pew
Feeling the Spirit start to move
When the preacher stands
And opens up the Word
And it cuts deep like a two-edged sword
Well suddenly the Spirit falls
It breaks down all the prison walls
Brother Jones gets up
And starts to dance
And a man that’s close to death
Gets a second chance
Chorus:
Well we’re having church like never before
That’s when the Holy Spirit
Starts to pour

Johnny walked into the empty street
He knew the people that he’d have to meet
He would make the message clear
There was going to be a showdown here

Little Piece of Heaven
Words and Music by
R. James Simmons
I may not own a mansion
Or some grand cathedral
But I got things
Money just can’t buy
I don’t hold an office
In some mega corporation
But when I get home
I’m feelin ten feet high
I may not be famous
But I got my treasures
Gifts from heaven
Sent to me in love
I don’t know any models
But I got a beauty
Shaped by the mighty
48
Refrain:
Now a witness she stands at your side
Victorious over all of Satan’s lies
Living proof that nobody is too far gone
And when we stand there before God’s throne
And He says, “My child well done,”
As a family you will enter into your home
Chorus:
You’re my big brother, my close friend
We’ve walked together through fire and rain
And if you asked me I’d do it again and again
And now I can rejoice with you
Knowing all that God has brought you through
And in it all He’s shaped us with His hands.

Criticism comes your way
Still you say that your gonna stay
Your gonna take her back once again
The world says that you’ve got your rights
You got the right to close the door tonight
But you stand on the promise that you’ve been given
You’ll be a family once again

Words and Music by
R. James Simmons
I’m here when you call me
Your down and out
You have some doubts about life
And tho I may be miles away
I’ll be with you
I’ll try and see you thru
Your time of pain
Shadows in my bedroom, creatures in my closet
I always knew no matter what you’d be there
You’d help me in my time of need
Be my strength when I felt uneasy
Help me thru my rough and rugged times
You were always a friend of mine

If only
A poem by
R. James Simmons
She stands alone before the empty grave
She stands quiet thinking about choices made
Rain pelting her; blinding with the mocking memory
Who she would have been
Where she could have gone
What she could have done
if only
The pain comes back, memories of her past
Voices of forgotten friends and lovers
Used and abandoned, bruised and broken
Carrying all the wounds and hurts
Who she should have been
Where she should have gone
What she should have done
If only
But here in the down pour
In the drenching rain
She screams out to no one
Are they hearing, are they listening
Do they know my pain
All those if only’s
All the you’ll never’s
She stands before the empty grave
She stands quiet, staring as a hand
Touches hers and holds on tight
She looks into the eyes of her face
Who she chose to be
30
Why she chose to stay
What she chose to do
Just simply
This life, this choice,
It couldn’t call, it couldn’t cry
If had no vote, it had no right
She lifts her into her arms and sees
Why she chose to be
Why she chose to stay
Why she chose
Just simply life

Prayer
A poem by
R. James Simmons
Lord God, Oh Righteous Lord of all
I stand here before Your Holiness
Be the judge of my shallow life
For my heart burns with shame and
I know who I am before You
Have mercy on Your servant
Be gracious, Oh Holy One
For I am ashamed, I am broken
Crush me, Oh God, bring me back
Wash over me with Your holy fire
Consume me! Consume me! Consume me!
That I may feel Your hand on me again
That I may walk with You in the dew
That I may rest my head on Your shoulder
As a young child holds onto his father
That I may again hear You laugh as
You joy in my singing.
Oh God, that I may return to that time
32
Prayer 2
A poem by
R. James Simmons
I pour out myself before You
Oh Holy One, Lord Jesus, My God
I pour out myself upon Your grace
Omnipotent One, God almighty
Who am I that You would care for me
Yet You came as a man and died
You took upon Yourself all my sin
You took upon Yourself all my failures
Omnipotent One, Merciful Savior
With everything that is in me I sing
With everything that is in me I praise
Yet my words are so weak to say
All that I feel for You, My God
They are feeble and incomplete
They are shallow when I compare them
To who You are Jesus
You are Holy, You are Righteous
You are Gracious and worthy
You are King of all Kings
You are Lord of Lords
Omnipotent, Merciful, Almighty God

I Declare
A poem by
R. James Simmons
I declare, I am redeemed
I declare, I am made righteous
I declare, I am sanctified
I declare, I am a joint heir with Christ Jesus
I declare, I have been sealed
I declare, I am a new creation
I declare, I am under God’s grace
I declare, I have been delivered
I declare, I am His child
I declare, I can go boldly before His throne
I declare, when I am weak He is strong
I declare, I am above and not beneath
I declare, I am the head and not the tail
I declare, He is my provider
I declare, I am healed
I declare, I have a mediator in Christ Jesus
I declare, I have been filled with the Holy Spirit
I declare, I am loved with an unending love
I declare, I will sing His praise
I declare, He is my shepherd
I declare, He is my healer
I declare, He is my God
I declare, He is worthy
I declare, He name is upon me.

Arise and be exalted
A poem by
R. James Simmons
Arise, Oh God, and be exalted
Show Yourself again, Lord of Hosts
Let all creation proclaim Your greatness
Let the seas be stirred and the mountains tremble
For You are a great and terrible God
From Your hands come blessings
Your breath shakes the galaxies
You speak and the worlds turn
Our words are feeble to exclaim You
Our praises hollow and weak
Yet You hear us and smile
You silence the voices of heaven
Just to hear the praises of Your people
I eagerly await that day when the skies will open
And the earth shall rise to welcome Your presence
Oh Glorious Day! Oh terrible day!
He shall return as King
All of the creation shall fall before Him
We shall lay down our crowns at His feet.
And proclaim with all creation that
Jesus Christ is Lord of All
