I‟m Joey. I‟m a student and I live in a flat in
London with three friends. I travel to my
university every day on the underground. I have
lessons every morning, and in the afternoon I
usually study in the library. I work hard, but I
also have a lot of fun with my friends. We don‟t
have a lot of money, so we often listen to music
at home. We sometimes go to concerts too. My
best friend is in a band. He sings and plays the
electric guitar. The guys in the band don‟t play
pop music. They play really good rock music
and sound a bit like the Red Hot Chili Peppers.

Examiner Good afternoon, sir. Can I help

you?

Student

Yes, please. I‟d like to book your
club for a twenty first birthday
party, on Saturday July the
eighth. I‟d like to invite 16 boys
and girls.

Examiner Fine. Would you like any

decorations?

Student

I‟d like some balloons and
flowers.

Examiner I‟m afraid that fresh flowers will

be rather expensive.

Student

Why? It‟s July and there are lots
of flowers. I‟ll bring some from
my garden.

Examiner Ok. Do you have any preferences

for the food?

Student

Yes. Some of the guests are
vegetarian so the menu should
include lots of salads and fruit.
And one hot dish, I think.

Examiner Ok and what about music?
Student

I‟d like a live band to play.

Examiner Sorry, but we can only have a DJ.
Student

That‟s fine but before the party
I‟d like to talk to him about the
kind of music he‟s going to play.
Most of my friends are of rock-
and-roll fans.

Examiner I‟ll give you his phone number.
Student

That will be fantastic. Thank you.

When are you off home to America, Luke?

Luke

I‟m going at the end of October – just in
time for Thanksgiving. Thanksgiving is in
November.

Elaina

Does the university mind your going?

Luke

No, they‟re OK about it. It‟s only for a
week anyway. It‟s my grandparents‟
fiftieth wedding anniversary too, so it‟s a
pretty important time.

Luke

That‟s on the second of November.

Elaina

Hmm. All that way just for a week. It
doesn‟t sound like fun.

Luke

It‟s fine, Elaina. It‟s a really easy
journey and I‟ve done it so many
times. I don‟t have a problem,
anyway.

Elaina

So will you see all your family at
Thanksgiving?

Luke

Sure. Thanksgiving is a family event
in the US. We always have a big
meal together and eat turkey and
pumpkin pie.

Elaina

Hmm. I always find those family
parties a bit difficult. I usually argue
with my brother.

Luke

I don‟t have any problems like that
with my sisters, so it‟s OK. It‟s only
one day, anyway. After that, I go and
see my friends.

Elaina

Do you think you‟ll go back to the
US when you finish your course
here?

Luke

Well, I‟d like to go travelling for a
bit. I haven‟t seen enough of Europe,
but then I‟ll probably go home and
get a job. Actually, I‟m thinking of
getting a part-time job here. I‟d like
to work at weekends and maybe on
Friday evenings ... maybe in a
restaurant.

Elaina

Well – don‟t come and work at my
place. I‟m thinking of leaving. I‟m
just too busy to do my college work.

Luke

What you need is a holiday! Why
don‟t you come to America with me
and meet my family?

Elaina

Er ... No, I don‟t think so. Not this
time, anyway.

Photo three shows a female rafting team and I
think it is the best of all three. I would choose
this photo because the girls look like fans of the
sport. They are smiling and it seems like they
are having a good time. Rafting is an extreme
sport, but in this photo it doesn‟t look
dangerous, so it‟s good for beginners.
I don‟t think photo one would be a good choice.
The article is about girls doing extreme sports
and I can‟t see if the person in the photo is a
girl. Plus, bungee jumping may look too risky.

I wouldn‟t choose the photo of a woman caver. She

the article is for teenagers. Also, some young girls

I went skiing for the first time a few years ago with
some friends. I had a couple of lessons on a dry ski
slope before I went, but I wasn‟t that confident when
we booked our holiday. We went to a lovely ski
resort in France called Samoens. The resort had
difficult slopes for experienced skiers and a lower
area for beginners, so it was perfect for us. The
village was great. It had lovely historic buildings and
some interesting monuments, but there was all kinds
of entertainment too with shops, bars, restaurants, an
open air market, and even an outdoor ice rink. We
stayed in a comfortable chalet which had great views
of the mountains, and we ate in fantastic restaurants
every evening. Anyway, everything was going really
well until we decided to visit the ice rink. I
discovered that I wasn‟t quite as good at ice skating
as I was at skiing. I was skating onto the rink for the
first time when I fell awkwardly and twisted my
ankle. That was the end of my skiing on that holiday!

I made my first skydiving jump last year and I‟ll
never forget it. Let me tell you what it was like. I was
always mad about sport at school and was in all the
school teams. Generally, I like to be fit and healthy,
but I became interested in extreme sports a few years
ago. Now, people ask me why I like doing dangerous
sport. For me, it‟s the idea of doing something that‟s
new and difficult and really exciting.
Anyway, I tried white water rafting and rock

climbing. Then I decided to do something in the
sky. I thought about having flying lessons, but
then I found a website about skydiving. One of
my friends is an experienced skydiver so I asked
him what it was like. To be honest, I‟m a bit
scared of heights, but he said it was the best
thing in the world, so I decided to try it.
I found a good skydiving school and booked a
course. We had an early start on the first day.
Lessons began at eight o‟clock and we spent the
first six hours learning about skydiving
equipment and what to expect. I‟m not very
keen on studying and you might think it was
boring, but it wasn‟t at all, and all the time I was
thinking about doing my first jump at the end of
the day. I was really looking forward to it.
Then came the exciting part. We put on our sky
diving clothes – our overalls, our helmets, our
gloves and our goggles, and then we got on the
plane. When it was time for me to jump, the
instructor told me to walk towards the exit door.
I wasn‟t frightened at all, but my equipment and
my clothes weighed so much I had to walk very
slowly. I felt the cold air through the exit door
and then ... I jumped.
I fell faster and faster and the wind roared in my
ears. Then, I opened the parachute and could see
the world far, far below me as I floated slowly
down to earth. Those were the most fantastic
moments of my life – and of the jump. My
landing wasn‟t the most comfortable landing in
the world, but I picked up my parachute and
walked towards the skydiving building. It was a
sunny day and I was smiling.

terraced houses are not very modern, but they look
comfortable. They are in the suburbs so it‟s easy to

I wouldn‟t choose photo number two because it
probably isn‟t very close to other people. There‟s a
lot of space here and it‟s quite modern, but not very
attractive. It looks more like a school than a home so
I wouldn‟t say it‟s an ideal place to live.

Have you ever thought about living on a barge? Marc
Sharp does just that. He bought his barge about three
years ago when he retired from his job. The boat was
in a terrible condition when he bought it, but some
friends helped him to rebuild it and now he lives
there with his dog, Benny, for company. He has a
very small living area on his barge, but there‟s a bed,
a table, an armchair and a plasma TV screen, and
that‟s all, Marc says, he needs. The best thing for
Marc about the barge is that he is able to visit places

to be the weather because he still gets seasick when
it‟s very stormy.

Have you ever thought about living on a
houseboat? The fact is, more and more people
are taking this decision. In Britain alone, it‟s
thought that there are around 15,000 people
living on boats. So why are people taking this
decision? One reason is that it‟s cheaper.
Buying a houseboat is a lot cheaper than buying
an ordinary house. Another reason is that people
want to get away from busy, modern life to find
a more relaxing lifestyle. But is it a comfortable
way to live? I visited Ben, 24, a computer
analyst, and Lizzie, 23, a newly qualified
teacher, on their houseboat in Essex in the south
of England to find out what life is like on board.
When I first got on Ben and Lizzie‟s houseboat,
it felt quite small to me, but as I wandered
around, it didn‟t seem much smaller than my
own one-bedroom flat. There‟s a living room, a
bedroom, a kitchen and a bathroom. I also came
across a small storage room and plenty of
cupboards. The couple also have electricity,
running water, a phone and broadband internet,
so working from home and keeping in contact
with people isn‟t a problem.
So what are the best things about living on a
houseboat? Ben and Lizzie told me that they
loved most things about their unusual lifestyle,
but that they particularly like the people. They
say they get on with everybody in the
community and that there‟s always a party or a
barbecue happening on one of the boats.
But are there any problems? DIY, the couple
told me. You can‟t get away with not doing
repairs to your home. The problem is, when
you‟re living on water, your house is constantly
moving around so things are always cracking
and breaking which means there are always
repairs that need to be done. The wind and rain
doesn‟t help this, either. However, it‟s still
cheaper than looking after an ordinary home,
and don‟t forget it‟s more environmentally
friendly, too!
I finally got off Ben and Lizzie‟s houseboat and
wandered back through the marina. The sun was
shining, people were friendly and there was a
really nice atmosphere. I felt quite envious of
their unusual lifestyle.

Woman

Good morning. This is the
accommodation agency.

Max

Hello. I‟m looking for an unfurnished
flat.

Woman

That‟s fine. How many bedrooms would
you like?

Max

Well, I have two flatmates so we‟d like
three bedrooms please.

Woman

Would you prefer a ground floor flat?

Max

No, we don‟t mind what floor it is.

Woman

Well, I have a nice flat in a quiet location
close to the park. It‟s on the first floor. It
has a fitted kitchen and central heating so
it‟s nice and warm in winter.

Max

Mmm … How much is the rent?

Woman

It‟s £800 per month. There are tenants in
the flat at the moment, but they‟re
leaving at the end of next month.

Max

That sounds good.

Woman

Right, well, I‟ll phone the landlord and
we‟ll discuss when you can go have a
look at it.

Max

Thank you very much.

It seems to me that the photo with products on
ice is a better choice. In this photo we can see
some luxurious ingredients like olives and
shrimp, and I believe that meals for special
occasions should be made from something
unusual. It‟s also important that all these
products are kept on ice so I know that they are
very fresh, which in my opinion is extremely
important. The other stand offers only ordinary
vegetables like onions or greens so it would be
difficult to make a whole meal out of them. I

Have you wondered how the Hollywood stars live?
Have you ever wondered where they shop? I took a
trip to Beverley Hills to find out.
Beverly Hills is a small town for the very rich. Its
streets are full of multi-million dollar mansions with
expensive cars like limousines and Mercedes parked
outside. There are shops and boutiques, top class
restaurants and hotels, parks and churches, but there
aren‟t any hospitals, and there are certainly no
cemeteries. This is a place for the rich to live in
comfort, to shop and eat and to forget about the real
world.
When I arrived in Beverley Hills, the first thing I
wanted to see was the shops! So, what‟s the best

place to go shopping? There is a place called
The Golden Triangle in Beverley Hills, which is
a network of streets filled with shops and
restaurants. The most famous of these streets is
probably Rodeo Drive.
The stretch of shops and boutiques on Rodeo
Drive is only three blocks long but it‟s probably
the most expensive three blocks of shops in the
world. Here, the most famous clothing designers
in the world have boutiques including Armani,
Gucci
and Coco Chanel. Here you can shop in
jewellery stores with names like Cartier and
Tiffany. In fact, Rodeo Drive is home to the
single most expensive store in the world: Bijan.
This place is so exclusive you have to make an
appointment in advance just to go inside. On a
typical visit, Bijan‟s average customer spends
around $100,000.
The tourists flock to this part of Beverley Hills
to go window-shopping and to try to see stars
like Britney Spears and Christiano Ronaldo. I
spent the day doing what the tourists do, but it
was the evening that I enjoyed most. During the
day the place can look at bit ordinary, but at
night, it‟s lit up with sparkling lights – the shop
windows look fantastic. If you are planning a
trip to Beverley Hills, a word of advice – avoid
arriving on a Sunday. Most of the shops on
Rodeo Drive are closed then, and the usual
crowd of shoppers is replaced by too many
tourists with nothing to look at!

Jack

Really? Did you do a course? I keep
thinking about doing something like that,
but I never do.

Megan

I‟ve done a couple of courses, but you
know I‟m really nervous about being in a
classroom. I‟m not sure I‟m going to be
very good with the children.

Jack

Of course, you will. You just said you
worked on a summer camp and you‟ve
got younger brothers and sisters that
you‟re always looking after. I‟m the one
that‟s an only child and this is my first
job.

Megan

Hmm. Maybe.

Jack

So, are you going to the coast then?

Megan

No, it‟s a language school in Madrid,
actually.

Jack

I like the look of Madrid. Some friends of
mine went last year and they had a really
good time. I‟d like to see for myself one
day.

Megan

Yeah. My cousin lives there, so I know it
quite well. She‟s keen on showing me all
the sights, so I think I‟ll have some fun.

I was travelling around Australia with some
friends last year. We went to some fantastic

places all over the country. For most of the holiday,
nothing really bad happened. We didn‟t lose our
passports; we didn‟t miss our trains or buses; we
didn‟t stay in any horrible places and the weather was
absolutely fantastic, too.
Then we arrived in Sydney and went to Bondi beach.
It was our last stop before going home. We were
staying in a youth hostel there and decided not to
leave anything in the hostel just in case there were
any thieves around. We were going home in two
days‟ time and didn‟t want anything to go wrong. So,
I put everything into a small black rucksack and took
it down with me to the beach.
We lay on the beach all day and swam in the sea. One
of us always stayed with our things to look after
them. So ... in the afternoon when I opened my bag to
get my book out, I couldn‟t believe it. The bag was
empty. Everything was gone: my tickets, my
passport, my money, my digital camera. Everything!
I couldn‟t understand when somebody had done this
because we were always watching our bags.
Then one of my friends, Joe, admitted that he had
fallen asleep when he was on his own with the bags.
Luckily, the police were really good, they helped us
sort things out and we got home.

It was a couple of years ago and it was December
24th. I was at the train station in Chicago. I‟d been
away for six months because I was travelling around
Canada and the US by train and by bus, and now I
was trying to get home to be with my family in New
York. I wanted to be at home on Christmas day.
My train was supposed to leave at two p.m. The
trouble was, the weather was absolutely terrible.
There was a snowstorm and all the trains were
running late. Of course, the twenty fourth is the
busiest travel time of the year in the US so there were
hundreds of people at the station and they were all in
the waiting rooms trying to keep warm. At five p.m,
we heard an announcement that all the trains leaving
the station that day were cancelled.
It was freezing at the station, but I didn‟t see any
point in leaving. I wouldn‟t be able to get on a bus or
even in a taxi, and I wasn‟t keen on going anywhere
on foot in that bad weather. I decided that I could
afford to stay at a hotel, but I thought they would be
full, so I didn‟t bother phoning any of them.
In the end, I spent a sleepless night in the waiting

room with all the other passengers. A lot of
them were angry, but I didn‟t feel like that.
Nothing could change the situation. I phoned
my family and told them not to worry. Then I
spent the night chatting to some other young
people. It was quite good fun, really.
The next day, the weather was better, so slowly
some men cleared the snow from the tracks. At
last, the trains started running and I was able to
get my train to New York. I finally arrived
home late on Christmas night. It was lovely to
see my family, and at least they had saved me
some turkey.

In Britain, very young children go to nursery schools.
Then, when they are four or five years old, they go to
primary school. At the age of eleven, they go on to
secondary school.
A comprehensive school is a school for children aged
eleven to eighteen that you don‟t have to pay for and
you don‟t have to pass an exam to get in to. A
grammar school is a selective school. This means you
do have to pass an exam to go there. Parents have to
pay fees for their children to go to independent
schools. Some schools are single-sex so they are for
boys or for girls only, but most schools are mixed.
When they are sixteen, pupils take their GCSE
examinations. When they are eighteen, they do A
level examinations. At sixteen, they can leave school
and go to work, or they can go to a college of further
education. Here they can do traditional subjects as

1.44 Zapis nagrania
Everybody gets worried about studying for
exams but there are some things you can do to
make things easier.
It‟s important to remember that‟s it‟s difficult to
concentrate for long periods of time. If you
study for too long, you‟ll feel tired, stressed and
distracted. So, stop every forty-five minutes or
so and do something else for fifteen minutes.
You will feel much better when you go back to
your studying.
Don‟t feel that you have to study every day. On
the days when you don‟t study, do something
completely different – perhaps a sport – so that
you forget all about your work.
When taking notes or highlighting, only write
down or underline the most important sentence
in each paragraph. Don‟t spend time copying
everything out.

Do as many practice exams as you can, but when you
get to a question you don‟t understand, don‟t guess
the answer. This is fine in the exam, but when you are
studying you need to understand everything. Stop and
look up the answer. Then, carry on with the practice
exam.

6 1 True 2 False 3 False 4 False

7 1 False 2 False

3 False 4 True

5 False 6 False

1.45 Zapis nagrania
Not many people look forward to exams, but that
doesn‟t mean you have to panic about them. Here are
some ideas to help you get through. Firstly, before
you go into the exam, make sure you are feeling
calm. If you‟re nervous, try running round the block
for ten minutes. The exercise will help you relax. It
will also get your brain working. Just make sure
you‟re not then late for your exam.
Have you ever run out of time in an exam or finished
well before the end? It‟s important to get things right
in an exam, so that you do your very best in each
question. Firstly, make sure you know exactly how
long the exam lasts, how many questions there will
be and what kind of questions they are. That way you
can plan to spend a good amount of time on each one.
Remember that some questions are more difficult or
are worth more marks than others, so don‟t divide
your time equally between all the questions.
Certainly, don‟t spend all your time on questions you
know the answer to. Answering one or two questions
extremely well and all the rest badly won‟t get you a
good mark!
What you write is very important, but how you write
is important too. Make sure you‟re writing is neat. It
doesn‟t matter how great your work is if the examiner
can‟t read it. Try to avoid spelling mistakes too!
These kinds of errors make the examiner‟s life
harder, too.
It sounds obvious, but always read through your work
at the end. Make sure you have ten minutes or so left
at the end when you can read over everything. You
may want to add things at this point, so make sure
you‟ve left room for new ideas.
Don‟t spend ages discussing the exam when you‟ve
finished it. There‟s no point going through it with
your friends. Stop worrying about it and move on to
the next exam. Finally, when you‟ve finished all your
exams – don‟t forget to celebrate!

Let‟s go out today. Do you want to
go shopping?

Examiner We went shopping last week. How

about going to the beach?

Student

No, I don‟t think that‟s a good idea.
It‟s not very warm today.

Examiner No, but it isn‟t raining.
Student

True, but look at those clouds. I
think it will probably rain later. I
hate rain! Last week when it was
raining I felt so depressed that I ate
all the chocolate I had at home. It
could rain today, too. And it‟s really
windy. I don‟t like weather like this.
There will be high waves on the
beach and we‟ll get sand in our eyes
and hair. Let‟s go to the cinema
instead.

Examiner But I like going to the beach.
Student

Yes, but it might be cold today. If we
go to the beach we‟ll have to wear
warm jackets and scarvesand we‟ll
probably still get cold. Let‟s go
somewhere warm – like the cinema.
I‟m not sure, but I think there‟s a
good film on at the cinema with
Colin Farrell! Did you see him on
TV yesterday? There was this
interview - I watched the whole
thing. It was great.

Examiner OK, let‟s go to the cinema, then.
Student

Good. And after the film, we can
have dinner somewhere.

Examiner Where?
Student

At an Italian restaurant, perhaps.

I think the flier with two sad dogs is better. First of
all, it says „take me home‟, so it‟s like these dogs
are asking you personally. Also, because these dogs
look very sad, you feel like you should help them
somehow. So I think this flier would make a lot of
people feel sorry for these animals and they would
really think about taking one home. The other flier
shows a happy girl with a cat that looks happy too,
so everything appears OK, and you don‟t feel like
you need to do anything. It‟s true that everyone
needs a friend, but that just means that I should get
a pet. It doesn‟t mean I need to look for it in an
animal shelter.

someone was lost in the snow for about
a day.

It rained again last night and the emergency services
are expected to be out again rescuing people from
their homes. Some areas have already been
completely evacuated. However, so far nobody has
been badly hurt, and according to the weather
forecast, there will be no further rain today or
tomorrow.

Speaker 2
Usually people are given good warning before a
hurricane arrives, and if it‟s a really bad one, people
are told to leave the area. If you are in your home,
however, the best thing to do is to go to the centre of
your house, away from windows as they may smash
and the glass may injure you, and hide under
something very solid like a table.

Speaker 3
The rest of the day will be cloudy with rain towards
midday and increasing with strong winds by early
evening. In fact, those strong winds are going to get
stronger with possibilities of thunderstorms in places.
I don‟t think we‟ll see the hurricane weather of last
month, but even so, you can expect some flooding.

Speaker 4
Yellowstone Park is home to the largest super
volcano in the world. First, let me tell you a little bit
about super volcanoes. For those of you that don‟t
know, super volcanoes lie under the ground covering
enormous areas of land. Later on, you‟ll see
thousands of springs and holes with hot water and
steam boiling out of them. Did you know that if this
volcano erupted people would hear it all around the
world. But don‟t worry! This volcano hasn‟t erupted
for 640,000 years and scientists don‟t think it‟s likely
to erupt again soon.

Interviewer Hello and welcome to the Good

Health programme. Today I‟m
talking to John Smith who is an
expert in teenage health. He‟s
written several books and
numerous magazine articles.
John, it‟s good to have you here.

John

Thank you.

Interviewer First John, tell me, when did you

decide to be a writer?

John

Well, I used to be a pretty good
footballer, but then I had an
injury and my career ended. I
spent a lot of time feeling sorry
for myself and sitting around
watching TV and reading
magazines. I read a lot of articles
about teenage obesity and things
like that and I decided I wanted
to try to help teenagers myself,
so I did a course in journalism

and became a writer.

Interviewer So what are your main concerns about

health and young people today?

John

Well, obesity is the main problem and
it‟s getting more and more common in
teenagers. A recent survey showed
that 16.6% of boys and 16.7% of girls
under ten years old are obese in
Britain. That‟s a really serious issue, I
think.

Interviewer Why do you think this is happening?

Is it because there isn‟t enough sport
in schools?

John

That‟s part of the problem – but I
think what‟s more important is that
fewer young people are interested in
playing sport or getting involved in
other physical activities. It‟s not
thought to be so cool any more. It‟s
OK to watch people play sport on TV
and to read about the lives of famous
sports people, but it‟s different
actually doing it yourself.

Interviewer

Good afternoon and welcome to the
Good Health programme. Our guest
today is health expert and writer
Joanna Good. Joanna is an authority
on physical activity, diet, alternative
therapy and all kinds of ways to keep
yourself in shape, but she‟ll be
talking today about finding ways to
exercise. Joanna, it‟s great to have
you here.

Joanna

Thank you. It‟s great to be here.

Interviewer

So, first of all, what exactly do you
do?

Joanna

Well, I do a lot of things, actually. I
write articles for magazines. I‟m also
something of a health coach. I
basically go to people‟s houses and
give them advice on what they can do
to improve their health. And before
you ask, I don‟t work with the rich
and famous – although that would be
nice one day, and I don‟t work with
people who are really sick. I don‟t

feel qualified to do that, most of
my clients are just like you and
me.

Interviewer

And why did you decide to
follow a career in health? Were
you always interested in fitness?

Joanna

Not at all, in fact, I used to be
quite overweight myself. I had
an office job and hardly did any
exercise and never ate the right
things. I joined various
slimming clubs but they just
told me to eat less and that
didn‟t work for me. Then, I read
an article in a health magazine
about finding time to exercise
and that was great for me. I
started losing weight almost
immediately. After that, I left
my job, did a course in fitness
and training, and also in food
and nutrition, and here I am.

Interviewer

So what advice would you give
to people who say they don‟t
have time to exercise because
their lives are so busy?

Joanna

Well, it is difficult. These days,
everybody knows that they
should exercise, there are so
many programmes on TV about
it, and there are so many
different ways you can exercise:
join a club or a gym, play a
sport, get an exercise video.
Exercise isn‟t boring anymore.
The problem is, home and
family life, and work as well,
can really leave very little time
for anything, so this is why
people put exercise last.

Interviewer

So, what can people do?

Joanna

The important thing to
remember is that exercise
doesn‟t have to take very long –
just half an hour a day in ten
minute bursts if necessary.
Also, it can be built into your
day. For example, get up earlier
than usual and go jogging, or go
for walks at lunchtime, or buy

an exercise bike and use it when
you‟re watching your favourite TV
programme in the evening. There are
so many things you can do.

Interviewer

Thank you Joanna, I‟m sure many of
our listeners will be writing to you
now with their specific queries. Now,
let‟s move on to our next topic, stress
in the workplace ...

What advice would you give to a

friend who wants to lose weight?

Student

There are many things that you can
do. I think you need to start doing
some sports because that burns the
calories. But you must do it
regularly, for example twice a
week. Another important thing is
to change your diet. You mustn't
eat any junk food. You can't go for
pizza anymore and you should stop
eating sweets. Instead, you should
start buying lots of fruit and
vegetables, and when you want
something nice to eat, then eat an
orange. And drink plenty water!

Examiner
How could we encourage

teenagers to do more sports?

Student

Teenagers don't do sports because
gyms and swimming pools are
expensive … And you can see in
the photo that there are a lot of
people at the gym, so it‟s difficult
to do anything. That‟s why people
don‟t go. We should have more
swimming pools and gyms, and
they should be cheaper.

Examiner

What should a good politician be like?

Student

Well, the most important thing is being
prepared to work for other people. It is
wrong if a politician is only interested
in his or her own business. Also, a
good politician should know the needs
of the voters really well and should
keep their promises from the election
campaign.

Examiner

What can be done to make young
people more interested in politics?

Student

I think politics is a dirty business and I
wouldn‟t like to be a politician. People
usually don‟t like politicians and
everybody criticizes them on TV and
in the press. Plus there is never enough
money to make everybody happy.

Speaker 1
It makes me angry when people say it‟s not
worth bothering during an election. They use
the excuse that there‟s nothing to choose
between the political parties, or something like
that. A couple of hundred years ago people
weren‟t even allowed to say who they wanted to
govern them. It doesn‟t take much to put an X
in a box, does it?

Speaker 2
There‟s been a lot of discussion in the media
about politicians who spend too much on
personal expenses, private jets, that kind of
thing. I think if they were more honest and
didn‟t try to hide these things, tax payers would
be less angry about it.

Speaker 3
Some people don‟t like the idea of having a
single currency or the same laws as other places
in Europe. They want to be individual. But other
people think it‟s great that we are becoming
closer to our neighbours. It‟s a matter of opinion
really.

Speaker 4
I think background shouldn‟t come into it for
any job. It shouldn‟t matter who you are, what
you look like, which school you went to, or how
much money your family has. Everybody
should have the same chance.

Speaker 5
There aren‟t that many royal families in Europe
now, are there? Some people think they‟re a
waste of time, others think that having a royal
family is good for a country because it brings in

tourism. They don‟t have that much political power,
do they?

If I wanted to buy souvenirs from London, I‟d
go to a gift shop like the one in the middle
photo. There are many places like this in
London and it‟s easy to find them. They are
small, but they have a lot of things that would
make good gifts, like postcards, T-shirts or
fridge magnets with the British flag on them. I
could buy something different for everybody
and these souvenirs are not very expensive.
I would like to visit an antiques shop because
they always sell a lot of beautiful things. But
these objects are always very expensive, so I
wouldn‟t have enough money to buy any gifts
there. Also I know that it‟s often illegal to take
antiques abroad.

What is the best way to learn
about the culture when visiting
a foreign country?

Student

Well, you can visit museums,
galleries and monuments, which
would help you learn a lot. But

I think that if you really want to learn
about the country you are visiting,
you must talk to local people and see
how they live. I think it‟s good to go
to places where tourists don‟t go, like
small local markets or little shops in
back streets.

Examiner

How well do postcards and souvenirs
illustrate the culture of a country?

Student

Postcards are good because they
show the most important views and
monuments of the country. I think
souvenirs will always remind me
about the places I visited.

Thank you.

Interviewer Hello and welcome to the programme.

Today, I‟m talking to American
graffiti artist Harry Coburn. Harry,
welcome to the programme.

Harry

Thanks. It‟s good to be here.

Interviewer When did you first become a graffiti

artist?

Harry

Well, I was a bit of a rebel at school. I
wasn‟t really interested in any of my
subjects, but I was good at art. I
completed all the assignments the
teacher asked me to do. The problem
was I found it all quite dull and the
teacher didn‟t really know what to do
with me, so I started doing graffiti
which I found challenging and really
exciting.

Interviewer Did you start by writing your name

everywhere?

Harry

No, it wasn‟t like that. I used to paint

portraits – on pavements and
walls across the city, cartoon
type pictures or caricatures of my
friends and family. But of
course, graffiti is illegal so I used
to get into trouble all the time.

Interviewer So what made you stop doing it?
Harry

Well, partly I suppose I grew up,
but also, we had a new art
teacher at school and she really
helped me.

Interviewer She recognised your talent?
Harry

Yeah, I guess so. Anyway, she
entered me for competitions and
I won a few, and then she got me
doing legal graffiti.

Interviewer What do you mean?
Harry

Well, sometimes people want
artists to do murals in public
places or to paints vehicles such
as buses or taxis. Also, a lot of
advertising companies use
graffiti artists.

Interviewer

Hello and welcome to the
programme. Today, I‟m talking
to British pavement artist Lisa
Hammond. Hi Lisa, welcome to
the programme.

Lisa

Thanks. It‟s good to be here.

Interviewer

Now, Lisa, you‟ve been a
pavement artist for many years
now, haven‟t you? Why did you
start painting on pavements?

Lisa

Well, I‟ve always enjoyed art.
When I was a child, I used to
draw all the time, and as I got
older I started to enter
competitions and I won a few,
too, and I even went to art
college, but I was a bit
frustrated. I mean, I feel very
strongly that art shouldn‟t be
locked away in galleries or
bought and kept in people‟s
houses. It should be on view for

ordinary people.

Interviewer

Is it legal?

Lisa

Yes, it is, if you get permission.
That‟s very important. Of course,
there are some people who think that
it is just a form of graffiti and
shouldn‟t be allowed, but most
people who see my work say it‟s
very beautiful.

Interviewer

You do a lot of copies of classical
works, don‟t you?

Lisa

Yes, I do. In fact, the very first piece
of pavement art I did was of the
Mona Lisa. I did that in Paris. I still
do a lot of copies of well-known
portraits, and landscapes, too. But I
also do a lot of modern works – not
only copies, but my own original
work, too.

Interviewer

How do you feel about the fact that
they don‟t last forever?

Lisa

That‟s a very good question. At first,
I felt pretty upset when it was lost
either through bad weather or
because it was time to be cleaned off,
but now I‟m used to the idea and so
long as I take a photo, it‟s OK. I just
move on to the next picture.

Interviewer

So what are your plans for the
future? Will you continue being a
pavement artist, or will you think
about painting on canvas?

Lisa

Well, I shall keep on doing what I
love best, that is painting outside for
the general public, but I‟m also
thinking of doing an exhibition. As I
said I take a photo of every piece of
work I do, so I‟m thinking about
exhibiting these. I‟m negotiating with
a gallery in London, actually.

Interviewer

That sounds very interesting. Good
luck with that. And now ...

Hello and welcome to Living Today. This week, our
science feature takes a look at The John F. Kennedy
Space Centre in Florida.
The John F. Kennedy Space Centre in Florida is the
NASA space centre where rockets are launched into
space. It is a huge site being fifty-five kilometres long
and around ten kilometres wide. It covers around five
hundred and sixty-seven square kilometres and more
than thirteen thousand people work there. Of course,
not all of it is open to the public, but there is a visitors
centre and there are bus tours you can go on. The
Visitor Complex is open every day of the year except
December 25th and on certain launch days and is
open from nine till five thirty although the Astronaut
Hall of Fame is open until six thirty.
The Visitor Centre is a fantastic place to visit because
there is so much to see and do. It has a number of
museums and also two IMAX theatres. The Astronaut
Hall of Fame is a must. It has spacecraft exhibits and
all kinds of space memorabilia through the ages. You
can go on an astronaut simulator and feel what it‟s
like to walk on the moon. You can also go to the
rocket garden where you can see the first rocket that

Hello and welcome to Living Today. This week,
our science feature takes a look at the Science
Museum in London.
You can find the Science Museum on
Exhibition Road, which is in South Kensington
in London. It‟s open from ten a.m. till six p.m.
every day except December 24th to the 26th.
The good news is that entry to the main
museum is free, although you do have to pay for
entry to exhibitions, simulators and the IMAX
cinema.
The Imax cinema is definitely worth a visit,
especially if you have children. There is a
choice of three-D films including underwater
adventures, a look at the inside of the human
body and an exploration of a space station.
There are often different offers to look out for,
such as see two films and get one of them half-
price. The films usually last about 45 minutes
but that still leaves you plenty of time to enjoy
the rest of the museum.
There are some great parts of the museum to
visit such as the Energy Hall with its historic
collection of full-size engines and models, the
Computing Gallery that looks at the history of
the computer and the Exploring Space gallery
that looks at how rockets and satellites have
changed throughout the space age. Look out for
exhibitions, too such as the science of spying
and the science of aliens and the exhibition
presented by the characters of Wallace and
Gromit that takes a look at the world of life-
changing inventions. There‟s always something
new, and there‟s definitely something for
everyone.
There are plenty of activities for children – apart
from the hands-on exhibits and experiments,
there are special birthday parties and even
sleepovers where children with accompanying
adults can stay at the museum overnight. But

what about the adults? Well, how about going to one
of the Science Museum Lates?
These events are held once a month for adults only.
They include opportunities for you to explore the
museum‟s most popular exhibitions, but they also
include nights of live music, top DJs, comedy acts
and even a night of speed dating! These nights start at
six forty-five and end at ten. And what‟s more, entry
is free!

I would choose photo number
three. I think it‟s the best one to
advertise the science fair because it
shows students doing an
experiment in a lab. We want our
students to come to the fair and the
photo shows they will have a
chance to use scientific equipment
and to learn something new in an
interesting way. I like photo
number one, because I‟m
interested in space exploration, but
I don‟t think we will have a
spacecraft at the fair, so the photo
does not illustrate the event very
well. I wouldn‟t choose the second
photo because I think people
wouldn‟t really like or understand
it. I don‟t think it is connected with
our science fair at all.

Examiner What are the best ways to teach

people about scientific
discoveries?

Student

People learn about the most
important discoveries at school.
There are also books and television
programmes about discoveries.
But the best way, I think, is when
people can do something practical,
like in this photo. Interactive
museums are excellent because
people can touch and try
everything. Using this method they
learn difficult things in an easy
way.

Examiner What might be the advantages and

disadvantages of being a scientist?

Student

Well, a scientist has probably more
freedom than a car mechanic or a
teacher. If you are good at it, you
can become famous and win a
Nobel Prize, and earn a lot of
money. But if you want to be
good, you have to work hard and
spend long hours in a lab. What‟s
more, you have to study all your
life and some experiments can be
dangerous.

Interviewer Hello and welcome to Science Today

the programme that looks at all topics
related to science. This afternoon,
we‟re discussing the subject of science
as a career and I‟m talking to scientist
Eleanor Jones, who is going to tell us
a little bit about her own career.
Eleanor, welcome to the programme.

Eleanor

Thank you.

Interviewer Tell us about your education first.
Eleanor

Well, I went to an independent girls‟
school. I was good at science, but I
didn‟t enjoy it that much at school. I
preferred maths. I was also very keen
on music and drama and I played the

violin and the piano.

Interviewer But you decided to do science at

university anyway?

Eleanor

Yes, because I knew that I
wanted to work as a scientist in
the future and I knew that it
would be better at university, so I
chose to do a physics degree at
Birmingham university.

Interviewer So tell me about your time at

university.

Eleanor

Well, to be honest, it made a nice
change to be away from home – I
worked hard, but I also joined
the choir and the orchestra and
had a good social life too. I also
started writing while I was there
and wrote articles for the physics
department newspaper.

Interviewer That sounds interesting.
Eleanor

Yes, it was and it made me
realize that it was something I
wanted to do more of. So, after
my degree, I did another degree
straight away in science
communication which is
basically science journalism.

Interviewer What was it like?
Eleanor

Great fun! We had our own radio
show on the college radio. We
had music, interviews and a few
light-hearted science discussions,
but it was all aimed at young
people. There was nothing too
difficult to understand!

Interviewer And now you work at the science

museum, don‟t you?

Eleanor

Yes, I write information for
exhibitions and things like that. It
involves quite a lot of research –
it‟s hard work but it‟s interesting.

Interviewer And what would you like to do

next? Have you ever thought
about teaching?

Eleanor

Hmm, yes, I have, and perhaps
that‟s a possibility for the future.
I would also like to work on a
science magazine full time at
some point, but right now I‟m
really enjoying my work at the

museum, so I imagine I‟ll be there for
a few more years.

Interviewer Thank you very much for talking to

us, Eleanor.

Eleanor

It‟s a pleasure.

Student

I‟m calling about the job advertisement I
found on the internet.

Examiner Would you be interested in the job?
Student

I‟d like to get some more information
first. What exactly does the job involve?

Examiner Well, it depends on what job you want.

We need some extra kitchen staff and
some waiters for the summer.

Student

I can‟t cook so I wouldn‟t like to work
in the kitchen, but I could do the
waiter‟s job.

Examiner Have you done this type of work before?
Student

No, but I‟ve always liked serving food
at big family dinners and celebrations.
Also, I speak Polish, English and a little
German, so I can communicate with
different people.

Examiner That sounds good. When can you start?
Student

In mid-July, I think.

Examiner Oh no, that‟s too late for us. We need

somebody as soon as possible.

Student

Well, I could be there at the beginning
of July, but not earlier.

Examiner Yes, all our waiters work shifts.
Student

like to have afternoons free.

Examiner Sorry, we can‟t change this. But

you‟ll be free every second

much will I earn?

Examiner You‟ll be paid six pounds per hour.
Student

And what about tips? Can I keep
them?

Examiner The waiters can keep all the tips

they get.

She‟s also wearing gloves to

the girl, but I can‟t see who it is.
The girl is talking to this person.

Examiner

Thank you. I‟ll now ask you three
questions. How is the girl feeling?

Student

She seems quite happy. She is
smiling and about to throw a
tomato to the other person. It
looks like she‟s having a good
time. She doesn‟t look tired at all.

Examiner

Do you think this is her permanent
job?

Student

No, I don‟t think so. She is not dressed
like a typical field worker. Also,
picking tomatoes all day must be
boring, so I don‟t think she would look
so enthusiastic if she had to do it
permanently.

Examiner

Thank you. Now, tell me about a
situation when you had to work hard
physically.

Student

A few months ago my family and I
were moving to a new flat and I had to
help pack things. I packed all our
books into big boxes and then
unpacked them again. I also helped by
carrying things that weren‟t too heavy.
But it was really hard work.

I wouldn‟t like to be the driver but I enjoy my
job; talking into the microphone and giving all

good knowledge of London now. I wouldn‟t
mind doing the same thing in Rome one day.

Speaker 2
It‟s a satisfying job because people generally
appreciate you, but it‟s quite hard work too. I
work shifts and sometimes at night. Pushing a
trolley or a wheelchair from one end of the
building to the other isn‟t easy either. I try to be
cheerful though for the patients‟ sake.

Speaker 3
It gets very busy especially on Friday and
Saturday nights and I end up rushing all over
the place. I used to muddle up orders
sometimes, which was a bit embarrassing, but
now I don‟t make so many mistakes. Most
people are friendly and give me good tips.
Occasionally, you get someone that does
nothing but complain about the service.

Speaker 4
I don‟t like doing it, but it was the only job I
found that I could do in the evenings after
college. A lot of people are really rude – in
some ways I can‟t blame them. I wouldn‟t
particularly want strangers calling me up in the
middle of the evening and trying to persuade me
to get a new kitchen. The trouble is, the more
success I have the more of a bonus I get.

Speaker 5
I work as a volunteer at weekends usually and
sometimes during the holidays. I make tea and
hand out cakes, and sit and listen to people talk
mainly. Some of them have had such interesting
lives and they tell me such interesting stories.

didn‟t have any office experience. Anyway, I saw an
advert for a vacancy for a trainee legal secretary in a
solicitor‟s office. I phoned them up and told them I
was interested and they sent me an application form. I
filled it in and sent it back with a covering letter and
my CV. A few days later, they asked me to come for
an interview. I was really nervous, but it went very
well. The next day, they offered me the job.
I was so excited. I wrote back straight away and
accepted it. They asked for references from my
college tutors of course, but they were fine. Now, I
just need to sign my contract and then I start work!

So when‟s your job interview?

Student

Wednesday morning. I‟m so
nervous. It‟s such a good job, and
I want to get it so much that I
can‟t think of anything else.

Examiner

And what does the job involve?

Student

In the advertisement they say it‟s
helping in the office, answering
emails and telephone calls and
arranging business meetings. Do
you think I‟m good enough to do
all of this?

Examiner

Of course you are. They invited
you for the interview, so they
probably liked your application.

Student

Well I wrote my CV and
covering letter in English and I
had excellent references from my
IT teacher saying I have good IT
skills.

Examiner

Is the interview in English?

Student

Yes, I hope I make a good
impression. How do you think I
should dress? Can I wear my new
jeans?

Examiner

No, but you have some smart
clothes, don‟t you?

Student

Not really, I‟ll put on dark
trousers and my dad‟s jacket. Do
I need a tie, too?

Examiner

I don‟t think so. But if they offer
you the job, you‟ll have to dress
smartly for work.

Student

Yes, I know. I‟ll think about that
when I get it. Do you think I can
ask them about the pay?

Examiner

I wouldn‟t do that. Not at the
beginning at least.

Student

No, of course not. OK, wish me
luck.

Examiner

Don‟t worry, I‟m sure you‟ll be
successful.

I think photo one is better at
illustrating the article about job
satisfaction. The doctor in the photo is
smiling and she seems happy with her
work. And there is a patient in the
background. She‟s probably helped
him so it is clear why she is satisfied. I
wouldn‟t choose the second photo
because the man looks stressed and
worried. We don‟t know what all those
monitors are for and the man doesn‟t
look satisfied at all.

Examiner

Thank you. Now, I‟ll ask you two
questions. What‟s more important in a
job: money or job satisfaction?

Student

I think both are important. It‟s difficult
to find satisfaction in your job if it‟s
very badly paid. But if you don‟t like
the job you are doing, no amount of
money will make you happy. I think
you should look for a job that is
satisfying, but you can‟t ignore the
salary completely.

Examiner

All right, thank you. And what other
aspects are important when choosing a
career?

Student

For me the atmosphere at work is very
important. I love working with other
people, and friendly relationships with
colleagues help. Another aspect is the
type of work – I would like a position
where I could be creative and face new
challenges. I think a competent and
understanding boss is important, too.

Thank you.

they are going to have a meal because
there are clean plates and bowls

I think they‟re going to have a
special meal. Maybe it‟s one of
the children‟s birthdays, or
perhaps it‟s the parents‟ wedding
anniversary.

Examiner

And is it important for a family
to have meals together?

Student

Yes, I think it is. First of all, if
you eat together – you spend time
together. It is very important for
the family to have time to talk
about what goes on every day.
Also, if you have meals together
you have to be at home for them.
This means your parents can‟t
work until midnight and neither
can you, plus everyone can relax.

Examiner

Ok, please describe a meal that
you had at a restaurant.

Student

It was last month. My cousin was
getting married and we were all
invited to a restaurant for dinner.
It was really great – the
restaurant was decorated and the
food was very tasty. There were
some salads for starters, then we
had soup – but I didn‟t eat it
because I don‟t like tomato soup.
After that there were two main
courses. You could choose
between a vegetarian lasagne or
roast beef. And finally there was
chocolate cake and tea and
coffee. It was really great.

I think they should choose the
second photo because lots of
people go to cafés, not only to
drink coffee, but also to meet
with friends, do their homework
or talk about things. This photo
shows that this is a place where
you can go with your friends and
have a good time, so people will
want to do the same. This photo
also suggests that this is a place
for young people. On the other
hand, I don‟t think the first

picture is a good idea because all it
shows is coffee with some cookies.
We don‟t know what this café looks
like or what kind of people go there.

Examiner

Thank you. Now I‟ll ask you two
questions. Do you prefer going out to
eat or eating at home?

Student

I prefer going out. First of all, it means
you can always go to a different place
and eat something different every day.
Secondly, you don‟t have to cook or
clean so you save a lot of time. I don‟t
know how to cook so my food isn‟t
very good – the food at a restaurant is
always much better.

Examiner

In your opinion, why are TV cooking
shows so popular?

Student

I believe there are a couple of reasons.
One is that a lot of people don‟t know
how to cook and you can learn from
these shows. Even if you are really
bad at cooking, the cooks on these
programmes show you how to do it
step by step and they make it look
easy. Also, it‟s much easier to learn
how to cook when you are watching
someone who‟s doing it. Reading a
book is not enough because the book
doesn‟t explain everything.

Hello and welcome to What’s on in Ireland. Let‟s
start with a food festival. The Festival of World
Foods takes place at Marlay Park in Dublin for two
days in October. You can check out stalls from all
over the globe, trying sushi from Japan, sausages
from Germany, curry from India, Spanish tapas, fresh
Italian pasta and much, much more. There are also
plenty of opportunities to try traditional local Irish
cooking including different breads, cheeses and

pickles.
There‟s no charge for getting into the festival.
You can also do free sushi and sausage making
workshops as well as learning how to prepare
various other cuisines from Africa and Asia.
Children can decorate their own cakes. There
are educational stalls where you can learn more
about environmentally friendly issues such as
organic fruit and vegetables. There‟s also a live
band and face painting. It‟s a festival that‟s not
to be missed!

Hello and welcome to What’s On − the show
that gives you all the latest news on the best
places to go and the best things to do in London.
Let‟s start off with food. If you like gourmet
food from around the world, then you should
definitely visit the Taste of London. This is a
food and drink festival which takes place in
June and which brings together various world
famous London restaurants.
The event is extremely well organised and is
held outdoors in Regents Park – although most
of it takes places inside tents, so don‟t worry if
the weather isn‟t fine. During this time, visitors
have the chance to try gourmet cooking
prepared by some of the world‟s best chefs. A
number of well-known celebrity chefs will also
be there to demonstrate their skills and the
dishes they‟re most famous for. There will be
mini kitchens on the site for this purpose and
you can try these at pretty low prices – certainly
much less than you‟d pay for the full-sized dish
at the restaurants.
Although this is a London event, cooking from
across the world will feature at the festival and
this year, there will be a special focus on
Thailand. If you fancy trying some international
cooking yourself at home, there will also be a
range of speciality foods on sale at the festival
including spices and bottled sauces from all
over the globe. As well as this, there are
workshops and interactive demonstrations daily.

Now, getting there ... For those of you that don‟t
know where Regents Park is, it‟s in the northern part
of central London. The nearest tube stations are
Regent‟s Park, Baker Street and Great Portland
Street. The festival lasts for four days, so you‟ve got
plenty of opportunity to pay it a visit. Tickets for
adults are around twenty one pounds and for children
they‟re twelve pounds. But please remember booking
is essential. I‟ll give you the number to call at the end
of the show.

simple but the student knows someone who went
there and enjoyed the atmosphere and the food.

So I was thinking, maybe we could
take dad to a restaurant for Father‟s
Day. What do you think?

Student

That‟s a great idea! Which restaurant
should we go to?

Examiner

I don‟t know; what do you think?

Student

Dad really likes Mexican food,
maybe we can find a good
Mexican restaurant?

Examiner

But I don‟t like Mexican and
neither does mum.

Student

Then maybe something Italian?
Dad likes Italian and so does
everyone else. That way
everyone will find something
they like.

Examiner

Sounds great. What do you
think he‟d like to eat?

Student

He loves lasagne but he also
likes all kinds of spaghetti.

Examiner

What kind of restaurant do we
want to go to? Somewhere big
and expensive?

Student

No, I think the best place would
be Villa Italia. It‟s small but
cozy, like a country house, so it
will be nice and quiet.

Examiner

Isn‟t that a bit too simple? Do
you know anything else about
it? Has anyone you know ever
been there?

Student

My friend went last week. She
says that the owner is Italian so
he really knows how to cook
these dishes. They also played
Italian music and all of the food
was delicious. Plus, they have
the best tiramisu in town – you
know how much dad likes
tiramisu. So, can you book us a
table for 6pm? You‟re much
better at arranging things than
me. I‟ll give you the number.

Examiner

Sure, I‟ll do it today.

In the photo I can see a woman.
She is standing in her kitchen and
preparing something to eat. She
has a cookbook in front of her
and next to her there is a bowl
with some vegetables. I think
she‟s made a salad and now she

is cutting some ham or something like
that. I think she‟s probably making
something to eat for herself and maybe
someone else because there is quite a
lot of it. She‟s reading the cookbook so
maybe she‟s doing something difficult
or perhaps she‟s learning how to cook.

Examiner

What meal do you think this person is
making?

Student

I think it‟s probably lunch because she
has salad and some ham. People don‟t
eat salad for breakfast and I don‟t see
anything cooking so I don‟t think it‟s
dinner.

Examiner

What is your favorite dish and how do
you make it?

Student

My favorite dish is spaghetti. It‟s very
simple. In one pot you have to cook
noodles – usually for about 10
minutes. Then in another pot you cook
some tomato sauce with herbs. You
add the sauce to the spaghetti and
that‟s it. If you like meat you can also
add some meat to your sauce.

Examiner

Describe a situation when you cooked
a meal for someone.

Student

My sister and I did last year for
Mother‟s Day. We found recipes on
the internet and cooked the whole
dinner. Of course, first we had to go
shopping. We bought everything and
then we cooked onion soup and the
main course. For the main course we
had French fries and hamburgers – but
they were homemade. And for dessert
we baked an apple pie with vanilla ice-
cream. My mum was very happy.

I think they should choose the first photo
– the one with the cook. First of all, he
looks very nice, he‟s smiling so it makes
you feel good. If you‟re not a good cook
and you want to learn, then you might be
scared, but this guy says – “don‟t worry”.
Also it looks like he‟s tasting his sauce
and he likes it. This means the recipes in

this book are tasty and he‟ll show
you how to make them. On the other
hand, the second photo looks scary.
There are lots of ingredients – for
someone who doesn‟t know how to
cook – there are too many. You‟d be
thinking “I‟ll make a mess if I have
to use all this.” Also, it doesn‟t look
as tasty as the first photo.

Examiner Ok, thank you. Now let me ask you

some questions. Is it important to
know how to cook?

Student

Many people say it isn‟t because
there are so many restaurants and
fast food places nowadays. But I
think it‟s very important. One
reason is that cooking is cheaper
than going to a restaurant or even a
fast food place. Also, if you cook
yourself then you know what‟s in
your food. You can use only fresh
and healthy ingredients and you
don‟t have to worry about being
unhealthy. Finally, fast food is very
unhealthy so you shouldn‟t eat it all
the time.

Examiner And would you describe your eating

habits as healthy?

Student

Unfortunately – no. I don‟t know
how to cook yet and I don‟t have a
lot of time for it, because I have to
study. So I often eat pizza and
hamburgers. I also eat a lot of chips
and sweets when I‟m studying – and
I know that‟s bad, too. I do try to eat
a lot of fruit and vegetables, though,
and drink a lot of water. Plus, I
always have a big breakfast before I
go to school so that‟s good.
