You will need a pair of
scissors
to cut the jewelry
floss and satin cord.
before you begin
To keep the
jewelry floss
tightly tied to the
barrel clasp,
follow these step-by-step instructions.
To make a
necklace
or
bracelet
from
cowrie shells,
follow these step-by-step instructions.
Slide a cowrie shell to
the center of the
black cord.
Put the end of the jewelry floss
through the eye of the barrel clasps.
Bring it back toward the line.
Make a few twists around the jewelry floss.
Take the end of the jewelry
floss back toward the clasp
and push it through the
first loop nearest
the eye.
Bring the end back through
the big loop.
Carefully hold the clasp and the jewelry floss and at the same time,
pull the knot tight.
Tie a knot.
This shell will be the
end clasp.
Lay your shells face up. For best results, your shells should face in the
same direction.
Periodically, hold the necklace/bracelet up to your neck/wrist to
make sure it fits. To make your necklace or bracelet longer,
add more shells. To make it shorter, remove a few of the shells.
To finish your necklace/bracelet, tie a
small loop at the end of one of the
cords. Cut the remaining cord off.
Like a button in a buttonhole, the shell
should slide through the loop,
but stay firmly in place. Now your
Cowrie shell jewelry is ready to wear.
Think up a great Pattern and begin stringing your beads & shells.
When you are finished, tie the other half of the barrel clasp in place. Use extra
shells and beads to make matching bracelets for your wrist and ankle.
Decide
what size
you would like your
necklaces or bracelets to be. When you
measure your jewelry floss, allow an
extra 4 inches
for tying the knots.
